Making a Business Card Holder out of Wood

  • I thought it would be fun to have a go at making a business card holder from wood. I used the same design as a plastic holder I have to keep things simple. This was my first attempt so there are a few mistakes made and a couple of things I'd do different...but it's not bad for a first go.

    Understood and makes a LOT OF SENSE!!! If you haven't already figured it out (I'm sure you have!) I've never used a CNC machine.😔. Maybe some day in the future, but not now.

    Was hoping it wood have been made more "by hand" than with a cnc, but it still gave me some ideas! Nice job, too!!

      I did consider handmade but I needed the accuracy. But it’s definitely doable with patience. I’m currently working on a better version of this...version 2 😂 but again it’s cnc as it’s a little bit thinner 👍

  • @davidnleeh4
    @davidnleeh4 5 лет назад +1

    Wow, thinner?!? It's understandable that you'd use a CNC, that way you don't lose near as much stock. Question, could you have placed the cutouts/pattern closer together when you put them on the CNC to cut down on stock loss?

    • @Smugwood
      @Smugwood  5 лет назад

      Yes definitely could have machined the pieces closer...but I was fairly new to it at the time. Also when I usually make a ‘first’ I tend to allow a little extra room just in case I’ve miscalculated something. Occasionally things do go wrong 😂😂

    I "kinda figured" it'd be ok, to subscribe, 😁. I like to joke around sometimes, LOL.

      Oh yeah haha. Done that so many times. Usually happens right towards the end of a project too...just when you think you've got right near the end without any mistakes...then boom! haha

    А как карты внутри фиксируются?

      Они не «фиксированы», они просто скользят внутрь и наружу.

  • @davidnleeh4

    On a serious note after looking at the beginning of your video, you could have shifted the work piece say, to the right & had more left over for another project, right? Would that have been within the CNC's parameters?

    • @Smugwood
      @Smugwood  5 лет назад

      I like to leave a bit of extra room on the first test piece because you never know how the material will react being cut, wether the cutter size will cause issue etc...so i tend to make something that fits well within the material, not too close to the edges and thicker cutout tabs than normal. Once ive made something and im happy with the result, then i work out what the optimum size is for the material and how close i can machine the parts etc. But many a time, the first attempt will be made out of something that not a lot of thought or prep work has gone into...just incase it all goes horribly wrong :) But for sure, if im batching orders out, then i'll nest (think thats the cnc term) everything together.

      @@Smugwood As far as the "bit size", I think that's where the "Undersized Plywood Router Bits" for dados would come in very handy. What's your opinion?

    I'm just wondering. When someone build something with a CNC.......... is he proud of himself ?

    • @Smugwood
      @Smugwood  6 лет назад +4

      I would say yeah...I think many underestimate the amount of work and time that goes into the design of any Cnc process. There’s a lot of trial and error in design, programming and creating anything on a Cnc and sometimes the smaller items can be more involved. The Cnc doesn’t replace a shed load of tools...it compliments them. So I would think yes would be the answer but then maybe I’m biased. 😂

      @@jinfolsom So true. Most times i make something on my cnc, I still have to use my router, my thicknesser, my planer, my drill, my sanders etc etc. A cnc is just an additional tool and not a replacement for all. I know a lot of people who have purchased CNCs and sold them for that very reason.

    Does author has a cheap spare fingers? TAKE OFF A F*CKING GLOVES WHILE PLANNING, SAWING OR MILLING!

    • @Smugwood
      @Smugwood  7 лет назад +3

      I understand your concern, I certainly don't have spare fingers...but when i wear gloves its for a couple of reasons...and i risk assess the process every time. I have allergies to wood...so when i can...i wear gloves. There are times when i can't...the process is too risky...sanding on the lathe etc. But 20+ years ago when i was serving an apprenticeship, many of the apprentices were getting severe cuts from various processes and whilst it was frowned upon...a decision was made for the apprentices to wear gloves during certain instances...i was one of those apprentices. Injuries reduced dramatically and ever since...ive worn gloves to protect my hands. I would say that the majority of my hand injuries have occurred when I'm not wearing gloves so for me...i prefer to wear them. Im not saying its safe or suitable on all machining processes though but would definitely say its down to the user risk assessing first.
