Basically. He hates everything. Sorry- but I work with engineers everyday... people who don't know much about them are praising them knowing what they're doing..... (here's a secret: they don't often times don't!) It's usually trail and error- and most of the time, it's someone like ME who's telling them what needs to be done.
Wheel spacers have been used for a LONG time now. If used by idiots- they're detrimental. If used by people who know what they're doing, they allow the "rules" to be broken and the envelope pushed just a little farther, allowing for the owners individuality and creativity to be shown. Sorry, but you're talking about metal, bolts and nuts here... not exactly rocket science. The tolerances really aren't as stringent as you're implying...

The load on the wheel bearing will increase slightly but greasing regularly will prevent premature wear. Adding spacers doesn't permanently change the wheel geometry, the caster and camber can be adjusted to match the OEM wheel geometry.

Wheel spacers won't damage wheel bearings. In fact, they are no different from a wheel with less backspacing. In other words, spacers cause no more damage than offset wheels. As long as they fit properly and are correctly torqued, there will be no issues.

I ran 1/2” spacers on the rear axel of my 996 Turbo for 5 years. It was a fair weather car, and tracked once or twice a year. Had 1/2” spacers put on my 997 C4S before I drove it off the dealer lot over 7 years ago, and it has been daily driven to this day. I do it because I like the way it makes the tires more flush with the fenders, and not once have any of the cars encountered a problem, exhibited any accelerated wear as a result of the spacers, nor do they affect lap times. I know people sometimes get pretty extreme with spacers, but imho if you’re just talking fractions of inches, it’s not going to have any tangible effect on the vehicle, so if you like it, go for it!

    1) Slip On Hubcentric Spacer
    2) Extended Studs
    3) Hubcentric Rings
This way the wheel is still hubcentric to the car and still have full lock thread from lugs to the studs.

Can't say I've noticed any change in the driving of the vehicle. The reason for the spacers, for me, was so I could have room for the front center caps. The wheel bearing issue is a concern. I'll have to see how they wear.

I am approaching my 72nd birthday. I have been racing cars since I was 18. First in small British sports cars, ultimately, today in a beloved 1991 BMW M3 with full race mods primarily by Dinan - including a full suspension upgrade - & autocrossing a 2003 Mini Cooper S with virtually all of the suspension components well above the stock components in performance. I've found few cars whose handling geometry was optimal right out of the company's engineering departments & some surprising performance cars that were true nightmares. A couple of decades ago, I saw a Motor Trend show that matched a top-of-the-line Corvette with a base Toyota Corolla on a relatively tight slalom strip. The Toy won every time, even when switching drivers. It took Chevy until relatively recently to get the handling geometry correct on newer models. My '91 M3 had a 2.4 liter straight 4 cylinder engine (originally designed for the 1983 Beneton F-1 cars). Engine mods could bring the car over 300 bhp & turbos used by the F-1s could generate 550+ bhp. But, even the stock suspension was so well balanced with 50-50 weight distribution, I could throttle-steer the car most of the way around the track. It came with wider wheels & wider lower-profile tires on the rear as most rwd high-performance cars do. With a race-tuned suspension, I could get 1.5g on my g-force meter in several corners on my home course at Lime Rock in Connecticut (home of Skip Barber's competition driving school). When I added 1/2" hub-centric spacers on the front & 1" spacers on the rears, I was clipping a half-second or more out of my lap times. My M car with its 4 cylinder engine put me on the podium almost every time & I was racing top normally-aspirated Corvettes & 911 SCs. The little advantages added up. Stock suspensions are a compromise, designed for the way the ordinary driver is expected to use the car. THEY CAN ALWAYS BE IMPROVED in numerous ways - and properly sized spacers are sometimes part of the solution to keeping maximum tire patch on the road.

I do not think these wheel spacers are safe as the ones fitted to our vehicle would result in the wheels falling off if I do not get rid of them . Keep these videos coming, they are very educational as well as entertaining.

I also thought the same thing. Sure engineers may know how to make suspension but after end of the day they work for someone with a deep pocket who only wants to make it deeper not thinner. Same with the exhaust. Idk if he criticised everyone or just those who do it but don't tune the vehicle to fit the increased size in the pipe.

Sorry, Scotty's wrong on this one, especially with regards to the engineer part. The engineers do not design things to be the best they can be. Factory suspension and ESPECIALLY exhaust can always be improved upon. They design the car to do a job as cost effective as they can make it. Then the aftermarket comes along and is ALWAYS able to improve upon it greatly.

    • @Dunki113
      @Dunki113 5 лет назад +23

My big issue is Gm designed a 260hp fwd car that's light weight then released a staged upgrade bumping it up to 300hp but chose to put 7" wide wheels and tires on the car so all young is wheel spin and eat up tires anytime you hit boost. Even worse is the chose a rare bolt pattern so your selection of aftermarket rims is slim to nill.... Idk why they couldn't have stuck with 5x100 so you could get rims from almost any manufacturer.

Stxn I agree it's not the best option. But the wheels were free.

  • @KingOath
    @KingOath 5 лет назад +16

The thing is though, many vehicles have very different wheel offsets between their base variant and their top of the line variant of the same car. For example, the small steel rims often fitted to base model vehicles are usually a very high offset, and the nice big alloys on the luxury or sports version could have offsets up to an inch or more lower. The suspension and steering of a vehicle like this has been designed to function properly within a broad range of wheel widths, diameters, offsets and materials. Usually the suspension system design between variants is identical, apart from maybe a different spring and shock for a different ride quality. If your wheel/spacer combination is close to or within the range of variance for that vehicle, and you are using good quality hub centric spacers with the correct amount of thread remaining for the wheelnuts, there will be no ill effects on the vehicle whatsoever.
Additionally, never blindly assume that the engineers have actually designed something properly in the first place. There are countless examples of vehicles from the beginning of cars to right now that prove that engineers make enourmous design blunders very very regularly. There literally doesn’t exist a vehicle where every component has been designed perfectly, it’s impossible. Those who say “that’s the way it came from the factory, thats the way it should be kept” and “I’m sure the people who engineered it knew what they were doing” are often those who know the very least about how cars really work

Ordering some spacers for the f30 Friday🔥😎

If you use a little judgement and modest widths with matching longer wheel bolts, and use high quality hub-centric spacers, there are not any problems at all. Heck, Porsche has offered 5mm wheel spacers on various models as an option for years right from the factory!

I doubt there's going to be a problem with properly installed 1/2" spacers with the appropriate studs. I agree that going over 1" will create premature wear, esp. with a larger wheel. That width may be necessary depending on the application, like an off-road truck etc.

What about 20 mm for the front wheels and 25 mm for the rear wheels? Do we still have wheel wear?

I run 2 in hub centric wheel spacers on my ram 2500 with toyo mt 35's since it was new. I have 80,000 miles on it. Wheel bearings are still fine tie rods are fine and i have no uneven wear on tires because I rotate them every 3000 miles. Take what this guy says with a grain of salt.

Hi sorry to ask as I haven’t really got the idea. But when you say rotate them do you mean change wheels from example front driver to rear etc?

The geometry, you pulled the thinking out of my mind, not that I didn't know that already, but many out there don't understand that, and what factory settings are, the factory made all of a specific type of vehicle according to the (geometry)..haha

These have now been banned from passing an Ontario Canada Safety Certificate when selling your car.

ClusterHeadSurvivor so when you saw your car in the peoples Republic of Ontario you have to go to a safety lane with the customer or you do this before you sell the car?

When wanting to register your car to get license plates and valid Tag sticker you need to provide proof of insurance, an emission test if 1988 and newer that is a pass and a Ontario Safety Certificate. Without it you can not drive your vehicle legally. Which is good because it prevents junk unsafe garbage on the roads. You can sell a vehicle safetied here or as is. The buyer has to safety the car to get it on the road. Driving without insurance is $5000 fine. Safety certificate inspection is about $100-$150 plus any repairs. This applies to vehicles under a certain weight. Commercial or heavy duty vehicles require yearly inspections. This keeps our roads safer.

Yes can confirm, I bought a cheap set of alloy neon rims and they didn't fit on my PT Cruiser, I got the minimum thickness spacer and then failed the safety.

ClusterHeadSurvivor oh yeah in Illinois my trucks have to go through the safety inspection twice a year
But that does not apply light weight vehicles
Cars and smaller pick up trucks don’t need those test
Yes. Of course you have to have insurance or you could go to jail
      And or $2000 fine
Misdemeanor offense on your criminal record
      Ugg
Does all of this keep our road safer not really
Because if a car or truck is really that much of a piece of junk it’s not going to stay running for very long anyway
In my opinion was really unsafe his cars that can go fast very quickly and are very quick and agile such as a BMW you can zigzag through traffic or a tesla extremely dangerous because it is very powerful very fast and very agile so you could have one of these vehicles suddenly squeeze in between you and the car in front of you and then hit the break that is more unsafe than any piece of junk on the road
Only because those types of cars are capable of out maneuvering

The Ford Dealer i used to work for put wheel spacers and cheap flimsy lift kits on some of the brand new F150's to make them "stand out" then would deny customers warranty down the road for bad wheel bearings and suspension components caused by said parts.....idiots

I put 10mm spacers on my c class Mercedes but I made sure that the offset was within the spec of a version with original staggered Mercedes alloys….. I’m a mechanic with 19 years experience and I just wanted my rear wheels which are square set to push out more to appear more like a version with the staggered set. Still within spec.
