    • @bombercountyblues
      @bombercountyblues 3 года назад +1

      The use of homemade/repurposed slide guitars is a homage to the the original bluesmen of 100+ yrs ago, who built their own instruments due to not having the money for anything else. As well as cigar boxes and oil cans, shovels were actually one of the most common things used.. usually with bailing wire for strings.
      The blues was literally born on those things..

  • @ElBrooklyn1
    @ElBrooklyn1 3 года назад +16

    What’s really sick about JJ’s playing is his pacing and groove. Lots of people can pull off those licks but few can put it together so that it adds up to a MOOD. He never forgets that the root of all this music is the call-and-response of African and African-American folksong. He plays a bass riff and answers it with trills on the treble strings. Its a conversation going back and forth, and his mastery is in allowing you to hear what each side is saying. You can’t just nail the licks, you have to find the FEELING and lock it down tight. Everything flows out of that. You don’t have the feel - or the mojo or the soul - and 10,000 rattlesnake tails won’t help you. In fact they’ll just make you look and sound ridiculous. And the first tip toward finding that groove is remembering that this is also dance music. If you can imagine people shaking, shimmying and rubbing up against each other while you play, you’re on to something. Of course, I’ve been trying to find that groove myself for the past 30 years...and it’s damned elusive.

    The Furch Guitars story began a long time before the company was officially established. In the 1970s, Frantisek Furch, a metalworker by day and a musician by night, faced the dilemma of complete unavailability of high-quality musical instruments in the then socialist Czechoslovakia. Because importing an instrument from overseas was too complicated and excessively costly, he resorted to his metalworking skills and used an old drum to make his first banjo. A few years later, Frantisek also made his first acoustic guitar, in the roundback style, with a spruce top plate from an old piano. The response of other musicians to his first guitar was very favorable, and prompted a high number of Frantisek’s friends to commission a guitar from him. Initially, Frantisek made several prototypes of roundback guitars, a type that was very popular and in high demand at that time, generating even more interest in his instruments.
    Seems like they make make a hell of a guitar.

    Your characteristic noodling on the fretboard is reminding me strongly of my first guitar teacher; many moons hence. I was doing classical grade work with him. He taught (and performed) both jazz and classical guitar. He always had a guitar on his lap and he would punctuate his conversation by improvising in bebop style. He did this unconsciously, but excellently even while talking to someone on the phone (pre cellphone era - dating myself I know) and his playing would get more frenzied and complex depending on his mood, and the conversation. He had studied with Barney Kessel, and he was the one who introduced me to the joys of jazz in the first place. Great flashback memory. Watching you do this is a true blast from the past.
