Can you change the hydrostatic valve with the pool empty??

I thought you had to drain the pool unless you had a manual valve behind it ?

I want to drain & paint my fiberglass pool in Central Florida. Is it better to replace this when empty or full of water?
Logically I would think when empty but I am concerned about draining it with a bad valve and the pool not being equalized and damaging/popping up the pool. I appreciate any insight.

I would suggest as soon as you can get to the valve remove it and replace it. If the valve is bad it will be leaking water so there is nothing to worry about on that end. But make sure if you have one to replace it and put new covers on as well

Michael, That is a really nice video. You did a great job. We have a concrete pool and are located on the top of a hill. How can I tell if the bottom drain has a hydrostatic valve?

Pull the cover off the lowest point see if there is a valve in there if so then you can replace it

is there concern about water either rushing in or out of the hole while replacing the valve?

yes but as long as you are ready to replace it is only a few gallons

Were the pumps turned off or the main drain closed off while you were doing the repair?

Where did you get the Hydrostatic Valve Removal tool from? It looks like metal as opposed to the PVC types I've seen. I'm worried the plastic ones would break.

I made it out of a steel pipe. the first one i had was plastic and it didnt last long.
