This video really hits deep. 0:17 "A remnant of that brighter, bolder time". I still remember you unboxing your own little white Lumia 920, and how you mentioned that your 1020 was your go-to camera back then. As someone whose used Windows Mobile 6, Windows Phone 8/8.1, and now Win10 on one of the last Nokia-branded Lumias, it really brings me joy to see this McLaren with the Nokia name still attached to it. It's far from perfect, Windows Phone, but something about it makes it worth more than the sum of its parts, at least for me ^^ Thanks for the video man, this is one I really appreciate, truly :-)
I had 3 different windows phones in the past and I loved them all. The metro UI the stability, the ease of use. The only thing was off about it was the applications availability in the app store.
Nah, Windows Phone/10 Mobile just didn't have the app support or proper support to begin with...I liked the Metro UI because it was refreshing and different tho. The Lumia phones however, I wish would come back, but with Android. The hardware was really good and well made.
I still have my 1020 and Imust admit if it was still supported I'd still use it as a phone, I personally found the interface a lot better than iOS or Android which came on the subsequent phones that replaced it, it just sadly lacked app support thanks to Microsoft charging more than the competition to use their platform which wasn't warrented given they were already in a lower position than apple to begin with.
Wishing, but knowing it will never come to fruition. Windows is anything but dead at this point. Tech is moving away from the PC level except for business applications and those who simply prefer a PC in 2020. When you can do nearly everything on a tablet or smartphone, who needs it in this day and age?? Plus windows always has buggy issues on nearly every platform release. Don't get me wrong because I'm bashing Windows...I LOVE windows phone, and truly wished they had out more development and marketing behind it. They didn't take Apple seriously enough until it was too late, and the iPhone killed it. So damn customizable, resizable live tiles...a dark mode before dark mode became a thing .before built in customization took off on Android...it was way ahead of it's time in my opinion. Still sad that it's a dead platform.
When you were gone from Pocketnow, I was sad that my favorite tech reviewer might have been gone forever. But, you are back in style that only Michael fisher can match.
Man, I respect you for still holding on to it. Imo, lumia series, at least, while still solely under Nokia’s development, were some of the most beautiful handsets of the time. Microsoft just eff-ed it up.

+audicat Yeah,I kinda think the same. The era of Longhorn builds was one of the most exciting episodes of the evolution of desktop Windows ;) But yeah, that's what beta software is always about. Experimenting at it's finest, and many features don't ever make the cut sadly. Btw, I still love the Startup and Shutdown sounds of Vista beta 1 (a woman singing that a-a-a-a thing :D) and use it still today on win 10. Anyway, Vista looked beautiful when it was finally released if you ask me, and brought many awesome new features to the table, like the search box in the start menu, jumplists, etc... What could it become if it also run as good as it looked.
I think that we as customers all lost from demise windows phone, think of the innovation and the competition that we could have if only there was another eco system

I really miss the bold design choices of Windows Phones in the era of Nokia, I wish MS hadn't purchased Nokia and simply funded them, and we would still have had windows phones today for consumers by Nokia and the platform was growing under their reign. :(
The problem with nokia is that they never adopted android until it was too late. Also the tiles taking up the whole screen is visually bad from a design perspective, and that windows had and still have the fame of being buggy doesnt help either.

This was the last real unrestrained Nokia phone, and it's a little bit sad it didn't see light of day. I own a Lumia 950XL, and it definitely feels like a shadow of Lumias past.
These Lumias were my first temptation into a world of smartphones. I thought about getting them with these bold colors and dedicated Windows (!) to run it. Never got any of them in the end. Still remains elegant and fresh when viewed today in 2022.
I absolutely love your work Michael, you keep digging such gold. Sadly we live in a date and age where it is only about numbers and not about how well and differently you do things. Windows Phone is still one of the finest phone OS(es) ever made, backed by solid Nokia Hardware. I have a Lumia 920 that keeps chugging along well to date, never has has the phone bricked, even once.

A part of me truly notes the passing of the Windows phone era in its previous entirety. I'm not joking - I *still* think the Dell slide-out Windows variant (circa first-gen OS days) was one of the most picturesque smartphones - ever - and I was a fan of the stupefyingly-huge camera resolution of the Nokia 1020. Even when I messed around with a 635 once, I found it was very much a smartphone that let you do other things (and not a small or large tablet that also let you send text messages and make phone calls). Windows phones have gone on to be absorbed into their greater software ecosystem, yes, but it only makes me appreciate my first-gen ZTE Windows phone more now. The software marathoner was certainly entering a hotly-contested market when it jumped in with its first wave of phones, but there will continue to be the nostalgia of knowing that one upon a time, Windows had the guts to take on incumbent giants and make a name for itself. ...and just for a little while, it did.

Ur the best tech reviewer I know , btw this technology was tested on the lumia 520 but in a very smaller scale
As a dev, that predictive touch feature would've been REALLY cool to work with, let alone play with as a user.
I had a Nokia windows phone and I absolutely loved it! It's one of the few phones I can't really say anything bad about.. It had zune built in and music was great other then the disadvantages on apps etc compared to Google.. I was in love with the Nokia 1020 when it came out and wanted one do bad
I had windows phone for 4 years and had 3 different lumia phones within that time. I loved it every single one of them. I had the lumia 1020 and it was worth every penny. I miss WP so much
Wow... I see this only today but this phone is so much ahead of its time.
dude u must have at least 1 million subs really !
Dang, nasty camera bump way back in 2014 huh?
Great video. Thanks. I feel the same about Nokia as a phone manufactor and the end of Windows phone.
Wow!....what could have been eh? Finger hover is like the opposite of force touch, if only they brought this out earlier... you never know. Great vid Michael :)
I'm watching in 2020 and those metro tiles still look better than any Android or iPhone UI.
