hi there,
I'm a swimmer and by entering narrow, I would start rotate my hip, and as a result the board wouldn't kept flat, more drag, less speed. So I started to open a bit more my surf paddling and gained a lot of speed (by comparison). and yes, the activated muscles are different between surf paddling and the swimming stroke.
cheers and thanks for your work
Thanks for the comment! Epic stuff
Hi Rob - wondering if you did an actual water analysis of the different widths and observed the speed generated/ effort needed - reason I ask is that at times I use the wide entry approach and find for short stretches it gives me more speed than my normal stroke - like an oar using shallower strokes rather than going deep. Works well catching a wave or paddling past someone but does result in more strain on the shoulders. Enjoy your videos - thanks.
Good question! I don’t have a video with evidence on width but I do have a video created showing the advantages and higher force output with depth. It’s another paddling mythbusting video so look for it in that playlist
Try doing wide grip pull ups Vs shoulder width grip, the answer is obvious.
Fantastic example
Which harbor was that at the end of the video? Nice tip!
Thanks for the feedback. That's Mission Bay in San Diego.
