For years I’ve heard good things about Santa Cruz California. But I haven’t been to this area since I was a kid.
My verdict is not to visit Santa Cruz. It’s a beautiful, safe, extremely friendly and peaceful city. If you visit, you won’t want to ever leave.
Today I parked at The Hook, a popular surfing spot in the Please Point neighborhood.
After making a quick breakfast burrito, I got out for a walk along the cliffs overlooking the ocean.
Santa Cruz is a very walkable city. So I did a lot of walking. On the walk, I stopped in a Cat & Cloud Coffee and ordered a drip coffee and a flat white. Both were excellent as was the service.
Later in the day I walked down to Capitola Beach as the sun was setting. And I couldn’t help gushing over how amazing this city is.
Don’t visit Santa. You will be smitten and won’t ever want to leave.

My name is Scott and in 2015, I bought a Ram ProMaster City to live in. Even though I didn’t know much about RV’s and campervans, I set about building the van out as a minivan camper. And in April of 2016, I moved into my minivan full time.
Over the years, I’ve learned you don’t need to have a big skill set to build your own campervan. And that living as a minimalist and utilizing solar power can be a less expensive way to live. I’ve also learned that a minivan can be a very comfortable home.
Please follow along as I document my journey.

Scott, I’ve been wanting to tell you this for a very long time. I’m almost legally blind. Traveling has become very difficult because of it. You take me to places and show me Beauty that I would never get to see without you. I thank you from the very bottom of my heart.
Thank you for telling me that. Wishing you well, Janis.
❤
Awesome ❤❤
So True
I was born and raised in Santa Cruz, I’ve lived in Capitola my whole life, and as most kids I took it for granted. As I’ve gotten older I’ve realized that Santa Cruz is an incredibly special place and every time I leave, wether it’s for a day or for months, I’m always reminded of how beautiful this place is and how lucky I was to able to grow up here, and it’s been pretty heartbreaking to see parts of the town that have been there since I was a kid get destroyed due to the recent weather.
Do you remember 1989 when the big earthquake hit Santa Cruz? What a mess that was. It struck just before the World Series was to begin. The old coffeehouse everyone loved to go to collapsed. Freeways collapsed and there was aftershocks for months, making it hard to rest. Our nerves were on end.
Even though I Grew up in Capitola, I was living in Silcon Valley (Sunnyvale) at the time of that Quake, home alone with two small children! Even though it was quitting time for my Husband, it took him over an hour to get home!😮
I believe we slept in the backyard that night! 😬
Hobos on train tracks!! $$$ 40 dollars per adultd to ride roaring camp train!! 😤😡
Glad you enjoyed our town. We have our struggles but overall it is a slice of heaven. Those of us who live here feel very blessed.
Santa Cruz truly holds a special part in my heart. I didn’t grow up there but spent a few of my adult years there. Nothing can replace the feeling I got living there walking along the ocean everyday. ❤
Love your new tuque!! And no, I won’t ever get tired of seeing you walk along the waves and the beautiful sights. This was an exceptional video .
Aww, Thanks. Hope you’re doing well
I was literally going to make comment saying the same thing❤
Well said, I very much agree!!!
Scott, glad you liked capitola/Santa Cruz area. You were right by our old home. How cool. It’s a neat little spot. Cat and cloud was one of our favorite coffee places too 😊❤. Their coffee is good, and they have some yummy gluten free treats as well. Thanks for another great video. Take care of yourself!
Such a great place! Glad you liked the video
I have been living in capitola for the past 3 months and I have never fallen in love with a place faster than I did with this area! Pleasure Point is so peaceful and magical and it’s so hard to capture it’s true beauty without experiencing it yourself! I’ve had family come to visit me and it’s the first place I take them :)
Rockview is my jam! haven't gotten over there in years :(
I have been opting to go without a lid for a few years now. Perhaps I feel guilty for the plastic problem I've contributed to over the years. Hearing you mention not using a lid made me smile.
It’s actually all about the coffee for me. Coffee tastes better without a lid
I used to go to Santa Cruz when I was young and loved it. It’s so beautiful there.
Yay!! Santa Cruz...where I've ALWAYS lived except for a year here and there. Now, you have a new subscriber, follower, and fan! You hit the nail right on the head with the title, too! 'Don't visit Santa Cruz,' because the town is like a magnet that holds you here, and always brings you back when you try to leave! Biggest downfall is you basically have to live in poverty with the rent/home prices--even with a moderate income. I'm a teacher, my wife a nurse, and we have 5 kids, so most of our money gets flushed away with rent/utilities...$4000 to $5000 a month! 😮😢 But, I guess that's the price you pay to live in paradise! Thank you for the video, and I look forward to following your travels!
Best,
Jamin
Hey Thanks. Glad you liked the vlog. Santa Cruz sure is something special. I think people make the place. I've been to lots of beautiful places but if the locals aren't nice, it's simply a beautiful place.
Santa Cruz and Capitola seem to have it all.
My friend lived there all his life and his daughter just got a job as a masters degree nurse at Dominican making $80/hr. When she was born in the 90's her bought a rental home in her name as a baby, locked in the tax rate till she dies. I bet 2/3 of people in Santa Cruz have been there 40 yrs or more or have house passed down to them
Really appreciated this update from you. Relaxing, interesting, thoughtful.
Love the sounds of the waves 💙
You have a soothing calming personality! Enjoy your work!
Thanks Lauren
Haha. As a young pup in1973, hitchhiking down the coast during a year off from college, I drank too many beers an made an inappropriate comment to a woman. She reached into her purse and produced a revolver. For the first and last time in my life I had a gun pointed at me! Thankfully, my friends intervened, and their words to her, combined with my extremely profuse apology made the difference, and her better sense saved the day. I'm still alive at 71 years of age. Good video. I have enjoyed Santa Cruz many times as a sober adult.
I'm not bored to hear the sound of the ocean. I use to live in California the ocean was the only thing i missed very relaxing.
These coastal towns are never boring! 🎉🎉Miss being able to go there for sure❤❤You could stay thru summer . Perfect.
I tried the Yellowbird Serrano for the first time recently and now I'm a fan. Much appreciated tip. Your comment on cooking pasta was also interesting. Ethan Chlebowski's cooking channel recently covered this topic too. He found that you can start with pasta in a cold pot with just enough water to cover, then heat to boiling. The cooking process for pasta starts around 180 deg F so roughly time it from that point using the box instructions, Add a little water if necessary along the way. When finished, you have cooked pasta in just the right volume of starchy water, which makes a base for any sauce. That's my new standard approach as well. One pot meal, less water waste, life is good.
I’ve been cooking pasta this way after reading an article from a food scientist about twenty years ago
My family is 3rd gen Vallejo and after decades of dreaming and saving my mom finally moved to Santa cruz! Really amazing city I would love to live there one day.
Oh nice. I hope you are able to get there soon
Oh, I’ll definitely going to check that out👍🏻😉 New subscriber, love your videos. They’re informative and kind of calming.
Aloha Scott - Beautiful ocean scenes. Thank you for the sights & sounds of Santa Cruz.
Very nicely done video & therapeutic to watch w the calming ocean sounds.👍
Ahhhh Santa Cruz ... Thanks for those shots of the ocean ... Really glad you're ok over there :D 😺💜
My new favorite city. Glad you enjoyed the view
Glad you enjoyed Santa Cruz, watching videos like these really makes realize how spoiled I am to be born here and live here in the Bay Area, with how many incredible places like this are just a quick hour away, it’s always cool seeing it through another person eyes! Happy travels
We called those hats a skull cap or a "skully" when I was growing up in Colorado.
I live in the north coast of Puerto Rico. There is a place nearby in a municipality called Quebradillas that is somewhat similar to that place where you were. Off course, I never get bored with the sound of waves. Quite soothing. The weather you experienced in this place the day of this video is pretty much our weather during the winter time. Love our winter because of that. Blessings 👋🏼
Really enjoy this video. The beach is beautiful and very nice neighborhood. Thank you for sharing with us. Also enjoy your cooking as well. Got some yellow bird as well. ❤
Love the sound so soothing thanks for sharing your new tuque is nice.
Love the ocean and sounds of waves 🌊 and you looks great on your new took/hat. ❤😊

Aww, thanks Barbara

@@cheflifevanlife Thanks Chef
Thank you for taking me for a walk and drive through my old stomping grounds.
Well done blog of the Santa Cruz area Scott. I’m from California and haven’t been to hardly any of the places you have. What a lifestyle. Cheers!
I lived there 15 years. I got some words for you newbies. Hippie Love exists no where except Santa Cruz, Santa Monica, Springfield Oregon, Boulder Colorado, Santa Fe and Ashville, NC.
My HOME TOWN! ❤ I moved to AZ seven years ago and I miss it SO Much! Thankfully, I was able to visit two weeks ago after many years!😊 Thanks SO Much for sharing!! 🤗
Great video. Ty for sharing. I grew up in Capitola. Listening to the waves everynight in bed was awesome. Never get tired of it.
I like your toque, it was a beautiful walk today and I saw some amazing flowers. I could stay by the water and just take in the sound of it washing onto the beach. I do enjoy my time with you and the amazing places you go. Thank you for sharing
That coffee looks so so darn good and you look and live just like I love 😘🌿
Greetings from Orange County California. You’re right, it never gets boring listening to the waves. We also have great views of the ocean. Just chill and enjoy the scenery.✌️👏👏👏👏
Beautiful Video, Loved the bird of paradise ❤ and the ocean was so blue in the beginning 💙 . Love that you cook 😊
So glad to hear that you enjoyed Santa Cruz! 🌊 I've been here for about 6 years but am planning to move on to Nevada later this year. But Santa Cruz will always be a place I return to!
Love this. I stumbled upon your video and it was great. I live here in Santa Cruz and was really tired of the scary weather and clouds. Your optimism helped to get me out of that funk.
The weather has been rough. Happy to hear you found my video uplifting!
Gorgeous area! I like the longer videos too...👍
Beautiful sceneries. Love the water
I live here. So glad you could appreciate it, and share it with others.
Santa Cruz looks beautiful! I definitely will put it on my list of future destinations to visit. Thanks so much for a great video.
Thank you
There is something very calming about your videos you pay so much attention to small details in life i find it relaxing !!
Thank you
Nothing compares with the sound and vibes of the ocean.
Just watching the video I became so relaxed and I live by the ocean in Florida but it's NOTHING like Santa Cruz.
Yes it is true...scott takes those of us to places we can never experience because of our health. He lets us escape our not to great lives by his videos. God bless him. I wonder if he even realizes how important he is to us. ❤❤❤😊😊😊😊😊
It means a lot that you find some value in my videos. Thank you
So glad you loved it here! 🥰 It's a special place unlike almost all others. I hope you get to have many more visits to our beautiful area
Thanks, me too!
I love the ocean waves.
Thank you for taking me along with you on your journey today.. from the comfort of my home it was a mini vacation today for me..I enjoy you Scott 😌
Well done! It had all the things I like from beach and surf to walking, and the city, and your happy face. I just learned that a friend moved from Carmel to Santa Cruz so it was great to see this video to show me what that is like for him. Good to see you. - Susan.
Hello from England! Very new to your Channel but I absolutely love it. As someone who appreciates travel and simple living this couldn't be better. The very best to you and thanks 😊
Hey, Thanks Elaine
I enjoyed everything about this video, the lighting in your van; i.e., the mellow glow, the composition, the content, all expertly done in a pleasing and entertaining manner...from Capitola and Santa Cruz no less, my own world long ago.
Thanks Robert
Wow, those houses are close to the cliff! It does look like a magical area.
Thank you for this peaceful video experience 🙏🏾
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching
Awesome vid. Your humor is great
Thank you
I love the strong waves and surf right before a storm front. There's something very energetic about it yet relaxing. This is a great time A year for strong waves
The surfing looked like it was great. I was surprised to see so many out in that cold of water
@@StaticCamperVan I have never surfed but I think the wet suits keep them Warm. I grew up on the beach pretty much and have always had a very healthy fear of how strong and treacherous The ocean can be. I don't mind walking in the surf but I'm not much for getting out further. I love walking around the tidal pools at the pigeon point lighthouse beach, Bean Hollow state beach and the Fitzgerald marine reserve in Moss Beach CA.
If you want to watch something really crazy but exciting and fun Head up the coast and you will find Waddell Beach and you can hang out and watch them crazies wind surf. Lol. It's quite the experience! Bring your own coffee though there are no shops nearby. :)
Enjoy!
Nice to see plants growing, it's still winter up here in the sierra.
It’s still winter here too!
You’re enjoying my backyard! Beautiful day for your shots. I’ve lived in Capitola for about 10 years now - wouldn’t have it any other way❤️
You seem so calm. I like that. Subscribed!😊
I love Santa Cruz !!
i love having fresh herbs on hand too. it just makes everything better
Enjoyed watching!!! 👍😉😃
Yes I love the strong surfs too! I live in Washington State and the best times on salt water are stormy. After storms beach combing is an adventure! Piles of kelp ropes, you name it odd things. Such fun!
Loving the sound of the waves from Oklahoma 👍🏻
I visited Santa Cruz years ago and fell in love!! I'd never been there before in my life, but it brought on so much nostalgia. I hope to get back there oneday.
Good videowing and artistry. I loved living in Santa Cruz too. I loved the people and atmosphere, with lots of artists and musicians, too.
I used to live in Santa Cruz I love the sound of the waves so relaxing
Hi Scott! I'm glad you found Happy Eggs! They are the best eggs I've ever tasted! They have them down south here in Georgia and Alabama. Thanks for the video!
Loveing these videos
The ocean there is awesome
I grew up in San Jose (Los Gatos specifically) in the 70's/80's and completely fell in love with Santa Cruz. I have traveled all over the states and currently reside in Florida. I would love to own property there to spend summers at, but it's out of my price range. I try to go back to visit every other year as it's my zen place and anyone I have ever taken there falls in love with it too. There's just something about the Cruz. 🙂
stayed in Smarts Motel in 78 for a few weeks from UK loved S C Bar and grill would love to go back
I was born and raised in Santa Cruz but for half a year (5th grade) I lived in Los Gatos, beautiful place
@@lisahoschkeandrade9751 you lucky thing .i was there in 1978 !!! stayrd in Mrs Smarts Motel loved it
U will be sad if u visit SantaCruz -now - I am 74 ..like u I lived in SC ..50`s 60` and left before 90`s ..Waw just there June 2024 -It was awful ..from the black burned Redwoods-where i once worked in Big Basin ..to very crowded roads And NO parking anywhere .NOW-The WindMill restaurant was the best place to hang out & had parking. The only other place that is the same * nice is 4 mile beach //other cool places are over crowded or gone ..Staff of life natural foods ..use to be great ..no more -dirty now ...Most all my favor places are awful or gone ..
Hi scott, its impressive how you live your best life. I have actually learned some things about stove top cooking from you. Your so conscious and your narrative is interesting. I hope you continue to share your stories. Your reaching a lot of people.
excellent walking tour about Sta Cruz
I've lived for 20n years in Santa Cruz, mostly Aptos. I'm glad you are having a great time
You have a lovely calming voice and presence. Definitely not bored by the waves and ocean view. I could listen to the waves all day long and he views are gorgeous!
Thank you
I was born in Santa Cruz and lived there till 2000 I never have taken that cliff path but looks really fun and I miss home like crazy but couldn't afford to live there again,Thank you for posting this video.
The flour-and-corn tortillas do have a chewy texture. That's what I like about them! Each type of tortilla (flour vs. corn vs. flour-and-corn) is its own type of tortilla, if that makes sense.
What a very pretty beach and town.
Yes, Santa Cruz is a lovely place to be. Surf n sun, my family's lived near there for 15 yrs. I tried and liked the Yellowbird serrano salsa
So glad I found your channel 😊
What a great video. Don't want it to end. Oh well. I'm just grateful 🙏❤😊
Thanks for posting this. I'm sharing your wonderful post to my friends so they can see how nice Pleasure Point is. My favorite place.❤❤. I was there last week. So beautiful. Thanks for doing these informative videos
That’s very nice, thank you
Always enjoyable to watch. Coffee hints and hot sauce reviews appreciated! (Yellow Bird not in stores in UK I'm afraid!)
Bored? No no.. walk on.. it's all lovely.
Yup it looks nice on your head. Scott, what a pretty place to live. But it looks really expensive.❤❤😊😊
I live in the Santa Cruz Mountains about 10 miles from Santa Cruz. I love the area. Great Video about Capitola!
Just subscribed to your channel ....love your videos and your calm speaking voice...❤from the Philippines!
Thank you
I love love love Santa Cruz!♥️Your walk about town videos are a such a pleasure Scott👏🏼By the way your touc looks very handsome on you👌🏼😊
Thanks Sunny
I live in the Santa Cruz mountains. I love just driving around and stopping at the beaches, no matter the weather. Felton, Aptos, all the surrounding towns are awesome as well.
For me too I love the Sound of the Pacific coast
I love capitola. That’s still “Santa Cruz” to me. I just took my kids to the boardwalk a few weeks ago, I really miss going down to SC. It’s a great place whether living there or visiting.
Awesome video
i need a camper to get away and travel this beautiful world lol just found ur page love it
You popped up on Google That is how I found you,I like your simple way of life,Blessings and Jesus Christ loves you!!!😊
They have low income apartments that have a 10 year waiting list. I found that out from a friend when I asked about the apartments by his house on the beach. It’s one of my favorite places to visit.
Like your cook stove your homes packed but cozy❤️❤️❤️❤️
I used to live a few blocks away from.the hook. It was such an amazing chapter in my life. People are so great and the community vibe in that area (pleasure point) is so enjoyable. Hard to find good work in sc county vs the bay area but if you can get bills paid its such a great place to live.
I'm in Ben Lomond not far from. Capitola. You made me realize after this long hard winter that I need to get down to the ⛱️ ... enjoy.
