So true, because I’m C2 rn and I sometimes get teammates that just go for every ball even if it’s in corner and I’ll be left in 1v2 situation. But like Thanovic said focus on what you can control, so Ima focus on improving and the ranks will come with that.
@@scubasteve6175 Yea that’s the right mindset to have. Because you could’ve always done something different. Blame yourself for everything and you’ll find yourself improving more than blaming everything on teammates, that’s going to get you no where.

I do love how the answers to these questions are honestly simple. Just put in the time, practice, & observe yourself like you would your teammate that keeps messing up.
You are absolutely right and I never sat down to think about it that way. I am at D2 right now and I can't seem to climb higher, but something rang a bell when you said "lower ranks let easier shots in". For the longest time I only focused on my rotations and never put the time to train my accuracy or power. I got from P1 to D2 very fast after focusing on positioning and rotations, but now in D2, even if my rotations are good, most of my shots get saved (something that didn't happen in plat) because honestly they are pretty mediocre. I literally just realized this when you said it. Thank you so much, now I know on what to focus my training. You are the best and I love you.
The best thing I've found with shooting drills is to pick a place in the goal and keep repeating the shot until you can hit that spot. Understand why you hit that spot and then move on. You can then apply that knowledge to other shots.
I honestly never understood what “the basics” are. I’m a diamond, and I think I can improve a lot of my basics still. Thanks Thanovic! This is really helpful
I actually really needed this video, I recently dropped from d3 to d1 in 3s without knowing what I did wrong. Guess I'm gonna start analyzing my replays and start by looking at the basics.
I've developed too many habits from playing against and with champs whilst I'm still in diamond, making it easy for me to play in champ lobbies, but hard for me to get there. Very helpful video for many players, but it's when you find the only mistakes you analyse aren't yours is when I find myself truly stuck
Im in a similar boat. I was mid/high diamond for a long time. found out some old friends played, but one is GC and one is c2-c3. they play with me cause we have fun playing as a group and dont care about their rank (or so they say). i've learned a lot and improved so much. I keep up with them in their lobbies cause I know how to position and rotate well. Then I solo q and cant win a game lol. Out of my placement games in 2s and 3s so far this season, i have not won 1
One of your best videos, Thanovic. I’m not an expert but the editing on this is spectacular, and coming from a hiatus it looks much better than your Rocket League guides from when the game became free. Especially the text looks great!
I was hard stuck at plat 3 on both 2s and 3s and it seemed forever. But after watching this video I analysed my replays and found that I'm challenging every single time even when the ball is closer to the opponent and getting outplayed ruthlessly making it difficult for my teammates to contain the attack. I worked on that in some casual matches and found immediate success. Finally the day before yesterday I went past plat and now I'm a diamond 2 on my 2s and diamond 1 on 3s. Thank you Thanovic. This really helped.
As a hardstuck plat/gold (I think I deserve low diamond, I have been up there) player this was incredibly helpful. I always blame my teammates being worse, or the opponents being better, or myself messing up, and I never thought of this approach! Thanks.
I've reached diamond kind of recently and this is the first video where I was addressed as a higher rank and just for that, I can't be happier right now. Still sooo much to work on tho.
Your not high rank till champ. Thats just my opinion. Im a diamond. Trust me when i say that. Go to any champ player or higher and 99.9% will say diamonds and below are beginner ranks.
@@FrOsTyB1283 talk to an ssl and they'll tell you anything below gc is awful. Talk to a pro and often they'll be frustrated to even be in the lobby with a gc. It's a matter of perspective
@@ultrascissor I recently got into C2 after being C1 for about 1 month, but yea, I still feel like i suck a lot lol, my aerial control is still a mess, my strength is my positioning and awareness, not the mechanical part (workin on it!)
I've never been the one to blame teammates and often overcriticize myself, maaan it's so frustrating to suck at the game when you look at yourself with that mindset XD. So I can imagine how bad it can feel to someone who never stopped to look at themselves realize that they too, suck :S Great video as always Thanovic o/
I am the same way. I am well aware that I am the problem/bad teammate and it is frustrating feeling like I am not improving (or at least not fast enough). I just want to be consistent enough teammates can count on me to pull my own weight and help cover mistakes. Rather overwhelming looking at all the stuff I need to improve on.
Best skill that helped me get from gold to champ was shooting and just being accurate in general with where I want the ball to go. Once I started being able to simply put the ball where I wanted I shot up through the ranks
But there is actually a huge point missing for the lower ranks. I remember when I was hard stuck plat, my mates couldn't even do passes mid or backpost rotation when I trusted them doing it. Not only will they then blame you for losing, they won't want to recognise their mistakes when you ACTUALLY know it better then them. It's a situation where you rely on them being backpost or not taking that mid and back 100 boost. It's where you count on them doing simple rotation but they still fail. Or clearing a shot while you had ball cam off for 2sec. They not only fail but also don't recover. And getting out there is a really hard task. Because like Thano said 'You can't control your mate'.
That’s why when you are lower ranks the best way to rank up is not trust your teammates. Sounds like a negative thing but the more you trust at lower ranks the harder it is to rank up. Just slobber on the ball and you will get a bone eventually.
If you haven´t watched Flakes´ road to SSL in 2s w/o mechanics yet, he basically says to stay on goal or be in a defensive position, because you can´t trust your teammates to make a save, you can only trust yourself, if you concede a goal despite being in a defensive position, that´ll be your fault, not your teammates´
This is where I am stuck I was at plat 2 then this exact thing happens and I go all the way down to gold 3. Then it takes forever to get back to plat. I had a game we were up 3-0 then my teammates start chasing everything into the corners leaving an open net and we lost 4-3. It is heartbreaking
If you solo q in 3s you ll always have at least 1 player who is blaming you for his mistakes. Solo q in 2s is ok, you ll find 1 m8 for the day to play with. But 3s god damn, impossible 😂
I hit champ last night, I’m not touching ranked till I find a c1 teammate in casual who can match my play style but your podcast with Luke an Jack was definitely the reason I hit it
This is a really well put showcase, one thing I’d say is I readjusted every setting I had already been accustomed to until I felt 100% comfortable, I then took at 2 day mental break and was able to go from D2 Div1 to C1 Div 2 (:
Im a low rank player and I was hardstuck on silver 3 😅😭 my boost and defensive game were better than those of my mates. But I started to watch my replays and analyse what’s wrong. So I realized that my ball touches, passes and shots were really ineffective. And after working on it for 1-2 weeks, I hitted plat 2. Im now stuck on plat 2, but that’s okay because I know I have to work on my mechanics and my consistency. So watching your replays is a big help. And yes there are a few matches where it’s your mates fault you lose..but in the next game it’s maybe yours 😏 so be kind we all play for fun
Backboards are what got me to champ. The hardest thing I've found and something you may want to put time into is placing where the clears go. For backboard reads the golden rule is that the ball drops like 90% of the time. Learning to read the drop is difficult but satisfying.
I just lost 100 mmr in like two days and I really wanted this video to apply to me but it didn't feel very much like it did. I'm honest with myself about my mistakes, I watch replays and see these bad habits and I spend time practising mechanics. What still happens to me no matter how much I play is that I slump at least 50% of the time and fuck up things I confidently have done for 800 hours prior. It becomes incredibly frustrating to see myself forget how to do something so simple that I've done for a LONG time. I've been stuck for around 600-700 hours now and it's starting to get really old. It honestly pushes me to want to quit the game almost every time I play. This is a well made video and the tips are great but I really do wonder if someone that's already doing this and still not improving has just reached a personal ceiling. Call it a limiting belief if you want but it's been my experience for hundreds of hours now.
@@b0ne91 Well you're in luck because I somewhat figured out my problem. It was mostly my mental. I had to work on a TON of stuff I found reading a sports and exercise psychology book and started reminding myself that RL is a competition. You are competing and that comes with lots of traps to fall into. The reason I slumped all the time is because I was always sleep deprived, always focused on failures and mistakes and frustrated with myself. I would always focus on things outside of my control like smurfs or bad teammates and even some days just believed my own performance was some magical thing I had no influence over which wasn't true. I also used to win games and play well and call myself lucky or call the opponents bad when you're supposed to attribute your successes to your efforts. I learned a lot. I now sit in the top 0.1% of RL at GC2 div 4 but I'm taking a break for a bit. I fully believe SSL is a CHOICE now. Hope this reassures you somewhat.
@@MegaYamato10 Damn, thank you for the response. I feel like sleep deprivation/exhaustion is a big thing for me too. I definitely know the mental is. But I don't see any where where I won't get frustrated if I keep failing at things that I've practiced a million times and half the days out of the week I just feel "off". I'd probably have to fix my physical health way before I can ever work on the mental. I don't mind making mistakes and taking time to learn new skills. But constantly failing at old skills that I haven't even neglected is what really makes me want to just give up. That being said, I'm in my 30s as well, so I think GC1/2 is probably the highest I'll ever see. I don't play ranked much anymore and even on my worst days, I'll be high C2/low C3, but I just can't bring myself to consistently be GC or even just do the things I want to do.
Sleep is obviously a big thing as almost everyone is aware and as I said it helps to start think of RL as what it is. Competing. No one expects to get to the Olympics doing squats at 4am eating pizza and ice cream. Your sleep messes with mechanics, game sense and mentality. As for the messing up stuff you've done before, I have bad news for that one. You will always mess up stuff you've done before and it will be because of things like sleep deprivation, loss of confidence, rust or just loss of focus from emotional or physical stressors and distractions. That being said I think people also massively underestimate the time motor skills take. In my reading I found a popular theory about three stages of motor skill learning but I noticed that they often talked about a set motor task that doesn't change much.
@@b0ne91 I accidentally sent that early my bad... Anyway rocket league is not a simple motor task. It's motor skills responding to visual stimulus which is ever changing with millions of possible scenarios. The reason no one in rocket league is 100% consistent is because not every shot or touch is the same. You would need countless repetitions on all the millions of combinations of ball and car scenarios to be 100% consistent and even THEN you could still slump. It's best to accept you will always make mistakes. Personally I don't think I've messed up a half flip for around 1500 hours because it's a simple motor skill that's always the same. Compare that to a simple motor skill used dynamically like a stall and it's much harder. Compare that to the millions of aerials and it gets ridiculous. Finally I think pretty much everyone can get GC (maybe with outside help) but SSL requires a lot. You need a lot of time and dedication along with positivity or you will burn out and give up. I'm kinda babbling now but I really think you can get GC, you just gotta treat rocket league like the competition it is. Everyone else in C3 wants GC too and if they're sleeping properly and practicing twice as often then of course you'll struggle. Btw if you want me to watch a couple of your replays or something and see where the problems lie, we could do that. It also might help to hear someone explain what the recommended emotional and cognitive reactions to situations are. Failure, success, bad teammates or Smurfs etc. Hope this helped.
I've thought about analysing my replays before. But then I wonder if it's even worth spending the little playing time I have doing that. It's ok not to rank up, as long as I'm having fun
Great vid Thanovic, ironically I realized that these very basics were what was keeping me in diamond and finally hit champion a few days ago by purely focusing on them. I've not done much replay analysis because frankly, I'm not sure how to really spot the habitual flaws rather than obvious mistakes. Perhaps a new vid on how you would do that would be helpful to myself and others. Thanks man, and who wouldn't take your advice?? You've come so far before our own eyes.
I’ve been ranking up in diamond recently. I got d2 div 2 in 2s and then worked from plat3 to d2 div 2 in 2s. I play other games mainly and then rocket league when I’m bored. Idk tho I’m happy where I’m at rn
First and most important things first: Great video, thanks a lot for it! I have been watching your content since i started playing Rocket League back in 2019 und i still find all of your videos really really helpful and enjoyable! Much appreciated! I also have a little suggestion/question, which i feel kinda fits to the topic of this video. It's maybe a bit of a difficult one und sorta covered in other videos, but I personally could see it being helpful to make one whole video dedicated to it. So here it is: Mistakes happen. Constantly and to everyone. Most of your videos to me are more or less about spotting your mistakes and becoming better to avoid them in the future. But even to the best of the best, mistakes still occasionally happen. And recovering from those mistakes can be an art in and of itself. So I think a video about some of the most common mistakes and how to recover from them in case they do happen to you or your team would maybe be super helpful to many of us, I feel. Again, I know this is a difficult topic and sorta situational, so I'd totally understand if you think it ultimately doesn't make sense, but i wanted to leave the suggestion here in case others are interested, so I hope this gives you some inspiration, if you want :) Also, I'd like to describe one mistake that at the moment seems to happen to me and the randoms I play with pretty often: I'm in low to mid Plat currently, so rotations are still a bit weird in many games. I always try my best to rotate and go backpost to cover as much of the goal as possible. But I often find myself in the situation where i am backpost and I see both of my teammates in our own corner chasing for the ball. In these situations I usually think to myself something in the lines of: "If i kinda hit the brakes and wait backpost where I am, I kill all my momentum and become an easy target for a demo play. But if I kinda creep forwards to keep my momentum or drive in a circle or something, I'd essentially leave my backpost spot and put myself into a position where i might not be able to make a save. So what do I do? What's the best way to react in this situation when i know that I'm the only one backpost and noone is behind me?". That also often leads to me kinda hesitating, and hesitation is mostly a bad thing, which is another reason why I want to find out what I can do better :) So in other words: How to make the most of a situation where I know that the rotation is already messed up? Just to make it clear: I don't want to blame my teammates for it or anything, I'm not perfect myself, again mistakes happen to everyone, so no hard lines intended here. This is mainly about a situation where some mistake has already happened and I wonder how I can fix it or at least make the most out of it without making it even worse. Any constructive input would be much appreciated :) And again, thanks a lot for your videos!
I think a bad habit that I have developed is air rolling all the time. I realized in plat once I started air rolling it was so fun to do and now I do it all the time. Even doing it when there is really no reason to or when it really doesn't help me or my teammates. Another would probably me boost management, always finding myself lacking boost and going for big pads. I have been starting to use the small pads a lot more, but I don't think I'm really that efficient at getting them all yet lol. Thanks for the video Thanovic, you always have really good advice! :)
Never seen the channel before but the fact that your really understand this game just helped me understand it way further than I thought thank you man I subscribed because this video was perfect and very helpful ❤️❤️❤️
I've been trying to tell my friends this for months and you explained it more than well, thankyou so much. I also needed to hear this personally so imma go boot up rocket league now and record a few games :\ Thankyou!!!!!!!!!!
Someone once told me that if you cant beat 2 golds at the same time then you dont deserver to be plat. Same for diamond and plat, champ and diamond, and etc. I will always feel this is true. As a diamond i can wreck plat, same for gold and bronze. I see their mistakes and can counter act them. This is a solid video and its nice to know that at any level you still have alot to learn. Except for SSL. Watch their streams. Those dudes are dead inside and know every angle every ball touch will make. Remember to have fun because the best arent having fun all the time.
That was well thought out and all very true. Im a champion 3 to grand champ and i need to look at my bad habits. Also I’m a bit inconsistent at the moment cuz i took a break for a year and came back but im working on that.
I honestly do really well and then ill get flustered due to my random teammates lack of consistency. That always takes me out of my groove and I start making stupid choices, whiffing or just going for the ball when I shouldn't. Just need to work on keeping my composure.
Now to look for training packs to help me with my shot placement and work on my boost management. I'm very bad about grabbing full tanks instead of picking up pennies.
Very calm and easy to understand where you can find the problem and the solutions. I kinda gave up on comp myself and admit not really doing replay analysis what should help me with positioning and stuff. Again nice vid. No tilt Saturday? And hope the Bond movie was nice
Yeah, guys he is right. I am steadily climbing up and hit C3 after a bit more than a year playing. The reason is, I am always training the basics. Lets make an example: I am C3 now, so you might think "this guy is working on tripple+ rests" and this is where you are wrong. I am still sticking to mechanical basics like double restes or stall resets into pogo musty double taps. So fellow gamers, to get good at the game you need to have the basics down
Always great tips, I'm a C3 and I really don't watch my replays other than to jump to a specific goal or save. I don't even save my best matches :P I'll look into that. I also thing that consistency is key for higher ranked players to rank up, the higher you get, the more relentless your opponents will be from my perspective.

@@erased8825 It's not a high rank but I would put Diamond as where people actually begin to understand gameplay and mechanics. Plat and lower is get boost, hit ball (hopefully in the right direction), chase ball, miss, and drive around looking for 100 boost to repeat.

You wanna know why I'm stuck for years in one rank? Lag. I always have at least over 100 ping every time I enter ranked 1v1 and it shoots up to over 300 randomly which makes me or the ball lag over to the other side of the field. When I'm in 3v3 my ping is commonly over 150 ping which is so hard to deal with so I can rarely help my teamates
Would be really nice if you could make a video on your thought process while your playing, because im c2 div 3 and im just playing, im not really thinking where I want to hit the ball

The best thing I've found with shooting drills is to pick a place in the goal and keep repeating the shot until you can hit that spot. Understand why you hit that spot and then move on. You can then apply that knowledge to other shots.
The D1 symbol saying "guys I'm high rank I swear" actually legit cracked me up
(I'm d2 in 2s)
haha same. Im d3 in 2s and d1 in 3s
@Devin odd
id say that gold 3, plat and diamond are medium ranks. bronze silver and gold 1 and 2 are low ranks. and champ and above are high ranks
@@246bro9 makes sense to me
@@246bro9 I wouldn’t call champ 1 or 2 high ranks.
@@charliepope6750 problem is I don't have friends that are good lol
This is one of the best explanations as a stuck diamond in trying to figure out what I should be training, now to figure out how to properly train.
This video is so great. I loved the fact you put in a realistic bad habit of yours, really added a lot of value to the video
Yeah I also challenge everything, hard habit to break lol
I have the opposite issue. I think I don't challenge enough and give the other team too much breathing room
Bro I this video helped me so much as someone who likes to freestyle, just mastering the basics goes a long way and I realised.
As a hardstuck plat/gold (I think I deserve low diamond, I have been up there) player this was incredibly helpful. I always blame my teammates being worse, or the opponents being better, or myself messing up, and I never thought of this approach! Thanks.
I needed this 😔 I’m stuck in plat 3 - diamond 1 for all this season
Same 🤘🏻
Similar for me d3-c1
I've reached diamond kind of recently and this is the first video where I was addressed as a higher rank and just for that, I can't be happier right now. Still sooo much to work on tho.
Your not high rank till champ. Thats just my opinion. Im a diamond. Trust me when i say that. Go to any champ player or higher and 99.9% will say diamonds and below are beginner ranks.

So I can imagine how bad it can feel to someone who never stopped to look at themselves realize that they too, suck :S
Great video as always Thanovic o/
I am the same way. I am well aware that I am the problem/bad teammate and it is frustrating feeling like I am not improving (or at least not fast enough). I just want to be consistent enough teammates can count on me to pull my own weight and help cover mistakes.
Rather overwhelming looking at all the stuff I need to improve on.
Best skill that helped me get from gold to champ was shooting and just being accurate in general with where I want the ball to go. Once I started being able to simply put the ball where I wanted I shot up through the ranks
how do u practice shooting accuracy tho (without workshop maps)
@@damiaint7324 in 2’s that works but in threes you got two teammates cutting rotation and blocking easy shots
I watch these i am high diamond sometimes champ but ill i do is freestyle i literally couldn't care less about my rank. Just love these vids
That's right, I'm champ and I still train basics everyday. Noticing I must add both backboard defense and back board reads
Never must train double reset to musty pancake pogo bounce
Backboards are what got me to champ. The hardest thing I've found and something you may want to put time into is placing where the clears go. For backboard reads the golden rule is that the ball drops like 90% of the time. Learning to read the drop is difficult but satisfying.
This helped a lot I got to know that my positioning was actually hot trash I went from dia 1 to dia 3 in literally 1,5h
Thx I've been hardstuck ssl for months
"Luck is irrelevant" Banger quote right there!
I've never related this hard
Hope this helped.
the way thanovic is explaining things are soooo good and those editors do be poppin off too
I'm GC and the lower rank section still helped me, your videos are always amazing Than!
I've thought about analysing my replays before. But then I wonder if it's even worth spending the little playing time I have doing that. It's ok not to rank up, as long as I'm having fun
thanos vids have allowed me to go from a gold 3 who was there for a year to a half decnt diamond teamate
thank you so much thanovic
please put the editors socials in the description, looks amazing as always!🔥❤️🔥
My bad my bad, they’re always in the description, I must’ve forgot this time haha
Been hard stuck champ for a year but recently been tapping into beast mode more often and taking control of games and winning. Maybe gc soon???
Definitely, everything takes time. Just gotta keep going for it.
The editing on this channel is crazy good. I cant even begin to imagine how much work you put in for every video.
First and most important things first:
Great video, thanks a lot for it!
So here it is:
Mistakes happen.
Again, I know this is a difficult topic and sorta situational, so I'd totally understand if you think it ultimately doesn't make sense, but i wanted to leave the suggestion here in case others are interested, so I hope this gives you some inspiration, if you want :)
Also, I'd like to describe one mistake that at the moment seems to happen to me and the randoms I play with pretty often:
I'm in low to mid Plat currently, so rotations are still a bit weird in many games.
That also often leads to me kinda hesitating, and hesitation is mostly a bad thing, which is another reason why I want to find out what I can do better :)
So in other words: How to make the most of a situation where I know that the rotation is already messed up?
Just to make it clear: I don't want to blame my teammates for it or anything, I'm not perfect myself, again mistakes happen to everyone, so no hard lines intended here. This is mainly about a situation where some mistake has already happened and I wonder how I can fix it or at least make the most out of it without making it even worse.
Any constructive input would be much appreciated :)
And again, thanks a lot for your videos!
you are my coach everytime I open these videos
I think a bad habit that I have developed is air rolling all the time. I realized in plat once I started air rolling it was so fun to do and now I do it all the time. Even doing it when there is really no reason to or when it really doesn't help me or my teammates. Another would probably me boost management, always finding myself lacking boost and going for big pads. I have been starting to use the small pads a lot more, but I don't think I'm really that efficient at getting them all yet lol. Thanks for the video Thanovic, you always have really good advice! :)
Thanks for the refresher my rank has plummeted from g3 to s3 the past few days and am becoming increasingly frustrated hopefully this helps

C3 LFG. I’m good enough for GC2 but don’t play often enough to be consistent and waste time in training perfecting my musty double taps.
As soon as I saw this, I clicked on it. keep up the great work!
The editing and visuals are always top notch in these vids. Keep it up
hey thano u hv already helped me with my rank frm plat2 to c1, luv ur content
Best improvement vid from thanovic I've ever seen. Very well done, sir :)
So fellow gamers, to get good at the game you need to have the basics down
Lmao
Two weeks ago I was plat and today I hit diamond 2!😁 I have used a lot of your tips!
Hey thanovic, Ty for the video, I tried it and I realized a lot of mistakes, atm im stucked in champ1/diamond3 and most of the things I wrote have been negative for my gameplay
0:38 "Guys I'm a high rank, I swear" As a fellow diamond, I can agree completely.
diamond isnt a high rank
@@erased8825 It's not a high rank but I would put Diamond as where people actually begin to understand gameplay and mechanics. Plat and lower is get boost, hit ball (hopefully in the right direction), chase ball, miss, and drive around looking for 100 boost to repeat.
This is so helpful, for real. I've been stuck in plat 2 even tho I play like champ I'm really good mechanicly I can flip reset, double flip reset ,double touch and so on (I freestyle a lot) I've written the things I need to improve on and it actually helps... A TON
