I too was sorely disappointed at the lack of baked shades and hope this is not a trend that is here to stay. Let's start a movement #savethebakedshades...let's buy Pat a new oven if hers is broken, anything to get us that sweet baked formula back 🤣
Great review! I was a pat mcgrath fan for years before she came out with PMG labs. It took me a while to purchase anything (back then her prices seemed more outrageous than they do now … sadly) but once I started it was off to the races. I am super peeved that the baked shades are gone. I 100% think it’s a cost and consumer ploy. The baked shades, while absolutely stunning and unique, are not the easiest to work with. I think PMG is now more focused on the regular old consumer, which may not reach for those shades as often because they can be finicky and want more wearable colour stories. I’ll admit that I love my motherships but they’re probably some of my least used palettes. With that I’m trying to be very selective about purchasing any more … but I love the colour story of the non-mattes in this one so I will probably pick it up during her next sale and try out the non baked special shades. Hate the matte colour story though. Without the baked shades, it will make it incredibly difficult to justify purchasing future motherships though.
Positive note: I don’t need another Mothership palette. I like the ethereal look achieved by the baked formula. It gives my lids that glass effect. I like duochromes in deeper shades like in Huetopian Dreams or Divine Rose II. The Blitz Astral shades (toppers) are prettier, in my opinion, in the baked formula.
I just put this palette back on my wishlist after playing around with it in person. I've been looking at reviews. Thank you for how in depth this review is. I find it interesting that consumers have the audacity to put Pat McGrath in a box where she is not allowed to create other luxurious formulas besides the baked formula we are used to. The amount of reviews that put down this palette because of the alleged lack of special shades is ridiculous. The last 4 shadows are not some basic metallic. They are still extremely special too me.
You spoke to my soul with the idea of a PMG labs take on murky mustards and grungy greens. Hopefully she hears our pleas! P.s. you and Hannah's reviews male me feel like I'm seeing the palette in person without having seen it! UK shoppers rely on videos etc as I don't know of any stores that carry PMG (at least not in Scotland). So thanks again.
I was also dismayed that the original astral formula wasn’t included. This palette is fine overall, but it isn’t my favorite by any stretch of the imagination. I’m hoping she (mother Pat) will redeem herself in future launches. I think her audience is waiting for new and exciting color stories that do not lean so pink and rosy.
I think without the baked astrals, you're better off picking up one of her mega pallettes. Pat's metallics are outstanding and multidimensional while also being easier to apply than these glitters. Also the pallettes are far less expensive. That being said one of my friends is OBSSESED with Moonlit Seduction and the glitters in there. She doesn't own any other mothership so not knowing the astral formula, she doesn't care that these aren't baked. I guess this is one of those pallettes that is going to do well with people that are new to the mothership collection.
so interesting bc i bought huetopian dream as my first pat palette and i think i would prefer creamier special shades than the baked glitters! curious to swatch this palette in sephora. thanks for the review!!
I much prefer this one than the Huetopian Dream. This one is actually my favorite mothership out of all of them and I have them all except decadence which doesn’t truly count imo lol
I think that totally makes sense. It's definitely a preference thing in terms of textures. I do tend to use a glitter glue when I use PMG baked astral shades because of the flakiness.
I definitely would love to see some greens in a future pallet. Like a deep deep olive green as the lower row far left shade, and a matte and/or astral mint ish leaning color, and absolutely a mustard not quite green not totally yellow matte would be a dream in her formula.
I think the most valuable piece of information you offered is the comparison among the pink/mauve palettes. I didn’t know how different they were in tone and atmosphere, I guess. Still, the fact that the last four motherships have been in the pink/mauve family has rightfully disappointed a lot of makeup lovers, myself included. Here’s to hoping that the next mothership doesn’t have pink
I agree with you : it's a costumer friendly palette, those are money based decisions we are getting. I'm personally disappointed, and won't be being the palette: I don't want to pay this price point if I can dupe the vibe with the mattes I already have and a few singles from more indie brands. I hope the next one will be more fun and artistic, but I prepare myself to be disappointed again.
@@Bekah_Sun I would personally love a green and blue palette, or a real rainbow one (I was really hoping the Mothership VIII would be a colour rainbow...)
I’m bummed about the new formulas. I prefer the original blitz and astral versions. The palette looks flipping amazing on you though. And your skin is so beautiful and glowing!
Prob the most comprehensive review of the palette. I appreciate the in-depth comparisons most as it really dissects the similarities & differences vs. the other Motherships but also puts aside the "newness" factor to bring to light what I like or don't most about the palette...or maybe that I might prefer what I already have!
I enjoyed this Collab! Especially liked your comparisons since I've been back and forth between this one and Huetopian Dream, despite them being so different. Thank you!
I'm so glad you enjoyed! I think the two palettes are really different on the eyes, despite both having rosy shades. I can't remember if I linked it but I have a full review of Huetopian Dream too ruclips.net/video/3WlveY8w9Xs/видео.html
Loved hearing both yours and Hannah’s thoughts. I still want the palette even though I can dupe the vibe. I’m going to simmer on for a bit though. I don’t think PMG will move this direction with her formatting her palettes moving forward. There’s a big no makeup makeup trend happening and sheer washes of colors in most lux eyeshadow this year. I think PMG is following through the trend. I think next year will be a different texture. Anyway, great video and comps!
just discovered your channel because I was looking for Asian reviews on this palette. I really like your delivery and then I found out you're friends with Hannah (she's my favorite), that make sense why I'm instantly drawn to you!
I would have loved more blues, grays, or taupes in place of the seemingly ubiquitous rosy and gold tones. I love rosy and gold tones, but just not in every single Mothership.
Came from the HLP show 🤪 I only have the V, bc it was the new cool palette when I discovered beautyYT and I don't love it. Bronzes aren't my love, but I didn't know that then. I'm a fan of rosey shades, so basically anything other than V should be in collection, but yet here I am oh well. Lol You're a gorgeous sight for sore eyes! Highlight isn't my thing, but I'm going to check your description box for deets on the cheekbone glow.
Would you consider making a ranking video of the PM palettes? Or share your thoughts around pros and cons of each one? I’m looking to make my first purchase now that there are 10 but it’s overwhelming to choose, whether going for a work horse everyday palette or a special, creatively inspiring one. Thanks! ❤
You know your taste best tho. Would you get a lot of use out of a very luxurious everyday palette? I take mine to work and can be quite dramatic with my looks so I never worry about the shine being too much. If it would be for you, then maybe one with your favourite color in it for more casual settings is fun too. I'll pop the VR shades all over the lids, or as a browbone highlight, to make the lashline or inner corners pop. Also consider them as highlighters, and the mattes or satins as blush or bronzer. I've has mine for like 3 or 4 years now and I keep good care of them, occasionally wiping the pans and spritzing them with rubbing alcohol. They're a great investment, and imo, you can't go wrong if you see a color story that speaks to you.
@@nailinthefashion thanks for sharing! I do get that a lot comes down to personal preference. I just find the selection overwhelming especially because the colors can look so different on different skin tones. I happen to have a similar skin tone to Bekah.

As with any artist, makeup artist, Pat McGrath can create whatever she wants to- it’s her art and her company. If she likes and wants the bulk of her Mothership palettes to revolve around the rosy based shades over, and over and over again, I guess that’s her artistic contribution and vision. However at this point she’s just giving her loyal palette buying customer- who for 5 freaking years have been asking for less “Variations-On-The-Theme-Of-Rosy”the big double barrel finger. I stopped buying from the brand entirely. McGrath’s message to her customers is received loud and clear. I’m done romanticizing the brand and the woman.
I've had it living in my shopping cart for week! For some reason I can't seem to pull the trigger on it - probably because I don't gravitate toward large palettes as much these days. Still considering it though!

As with any artist, makeup artist, Pat McGrath can create whatever she wants to- it’s her art and her company. If she likes and wants the bulk of her Mothership palettes to revolve around the rosy based shades over, and over and over again, I guess that’s her artistic contribution and vision. “Variations-On-The-Theme-Of-Rosy”the big double barrel finger.
I stopped buying from the brand entirely. McGrath’s message to her customers is received loud and clear. I’m done romanticizing the brand and the woman.
