Thanks for this beautiful video with subtitles of information. You are doing good job👍👍 I will want to purchase one of these beautiful oil quenched blades.
I'm thoroughly impressed! I've been passionate about bladesmithing and knife making for about 10 years (still as a hobby though) and have always enjoying researching and learning more about every process that goes into the craft, so it's really nice to see the way these are forged, heat treated, built, and finished with such care and attention to detail. From the careful forging (not overworking it while too cold), to the normalizing & thermocycling without laying in on its side or on a heat sink (i.e. anvil) that causes uneven cooling in the blade, to the selective hardening (in both the heating and the quenching) while using a proper quench medium for this type of steel (oil), to the nice and stout tang for strength, to the thoroughly glued stacked-leather handle, the careful grinding even before heat treating and especially after heat treating while making sure to use fresh abrasives, to the western leather sheath with its one piece belt loop (many people would just use some scrap to attach a belt loop as a separate piece in order to try to conserve leather, which there's nothing wrong with, but it stood out to me as you trying to make it the best you can), to the attention of the blade geometry and finish, the careful handle contouring, so on. I really do like the stacked leather handle and the welted leather sheath as well. I'd definitely be proud to own such a piece! I found your channel by your comment over on Jason Knight's kukri test video and was intrigued by the information you left there. I believe I also noticed there that you mentioned using modern steel, I'm just curious but by "modern"do you mean leaf springs that have not been previously used on trucks/cars as to avoid any potentially added internal stresses and micro-fractures within the steel that can occur during its life on the vehicle? Thanks for sharing, the video and captions were very well done.
Thanks mate! None of us have ever made a video like this before so we're glad that it's gone down well. We're using the same 5160 as has been sued traditiionally from leaf springs, but we're heat treating and quenching in a very modern way as opposed to no temper and a teapot quench as is the norm. So even though the source of the steel is the same, the structures in the final steel blade are very different. Some houses are also plasma cutting/CNCing their blades and using factory produced EN31 as a steel instead. This ahs some advantages, but I feel that for the most part they've not fully grasped how differently they need to be handling the steel and are putting out substandard knives now as a result. Take care, Andrew and the team at Kailash Blades
Ah yes, the teapot quench, I remember reading about it on some kukris websites and marveling that the kamis were still able to produce quality working blades with that method. I still vastly prefer the modern oil quench, it is controlled, the oil is a more predictable medium than water, and the entire edge is done at the same time. I'm going to be ordering a couple of blades soonish, can't wait to put down an order for a chitlange and something else. I especially like the way the handles are done, with the rings that lock your fingers onto the handle and prevent slippage, is this something that other shops have failed to understand the purpose of? Because I have some kukris where the rings are basically decorative, and not very grippy at all.
My kukuri from Kailash will be here by the end of the month. Can't wait to see it. They constantly stayed in touch throughout the process. Kailash has a great selection of khukris to choose from. Customization is available as well. These are NOT tourist grade, but the real deal.

They're both great handle materials and with the right care can be grippy and long lasting options. The buffalo horn is often polished which can be very slippery. If it is left rough it can be quite grippy even when wet. Rosewood has a slight grip advantage. Buffalo horn is better at impact resistance and is less likely to break, crack or chip if dropped. However in my view they are slightly more likely to crack over time due to shrinkage or some similar and rosewood is more forgiving in this manner. Take care, Andrew and the team at Kailash
