I saw this movie in the theater when it first came out. Afterwards in the women's bathroom there were quite a few ladies quietly sobbing and trying to pull it together before rejoining their husbands waiting in the hall. A beautiful story about bitterness, betrayal, understanding and redemption through the generations told in that quietly poetic way of Asia. Anyone who has ever felt misunderstood by their mothers should watch it. One of the best movies ever made.

I don't like how so many think "every woman/mother/daughter should watch this" when I'm a male and absolutely adore this film. Absolutely lost it in the cinema each time I saw it, which was nine.

I have always wanted to make my mom sit down and watch this movie with me. Maybe we would understand each other more. But it's a beautiful movie and book. It really transcends race, culture & time. It's about mothers, daughters, families. Real people, emotions, historical sentiments.
This is not a movie I would have set out to watch, but having run across it on TV, I was captivated by it's stories. And it never fails to make me cry, hope, & teach me something new each time I watch it. ❤️✌️☮️🕊️

I am a man, and I think especially men should watch this movie. I just saw it again last night on TV after many years. It touched me very deeply. I am not Asian but Caucasian and the themes resonate deeply, regardless of your ethnic or cultural background (although I'm certain has special meaning to Asian-American women). What the movie does so beautifully is portray enough of the culture in the story to allow you to understand even if you're someone not from that culture. And the themes are universal, so it is enough to touch anyone. I do so wish that men would learn it's ok to feel things. It's just a very HUMAN movie about humanity. IMHO it's a universal tear-jerker! As a movie buff, few movies come close to the emotion portrayed in this picture. Some movies have a scene or two that might illicit tears from me, but this is one I have a hard time not crying all the way through. Storytelling at it's finest!

I agree with you. I am a man, and I watched this film with my mother in San Francisco years ago when the film was released. Although her side is predominantly Hispanic (there's supposedly some distant Asian heritage), the film does indeed touch upon universal themes of family and the reasons why honesty from the prior generation is so vital to the well-being of the next generation.

Completely agree. After seeing this when I was a boy in middle school, I instantly sought out Amy Tan's other novels, and quickly read them all (The Kitchen God's Wife is her best, IMO). She's still my favorite American author, to this day.

This is indeed one of those movies where you really have to listen to every word that to gain every bit of hidden messages that makes up this beautiful film. Every time i hear this piece here it reminds me to know my worth, and that my happiness is equally important to everyone elses. Because of this music and this movie, ive discovered many parts of who i am as an individual and my true strength's as a woman. Thank you for sharing!

Our paths along destiny intertwine in unforeseeable patterns. When we cannot see the light it is easy for us to loose faith. The path must be felt inside every fiber of one's being. Relinquish teachings of gain and lose, good and evil. Rely upon your heart and what you feel inside.

This film is beautiful. I hate the term "chick flick", and sadly I have heard this film referred to as such. Just because a movie is emotional, or deep, doesn't mean that it is intended for the female gender. This is the trouble with our society, in my opinion. We are all supposed to feel things. We are all supposed to cry, to laugh, to feel enraged and to love. I am a woman. A strange one, true. But I enjoy a violent action movie just as much as I do a heart wrenching romance. Most of my friends are males and a lot of them get choked up during emotional or sad scenes in movies. Just like I do.
The Joy Luck Club is one of the most beautiful, heartbreaking movies I've ever watched. The book is exquisite as well. Tragic stories and tales of grief and loss, these are the best stories in the world. We can all relate to loss and sorrow. Whether it be the loss of a pet or a grandparent in our younger years, or loss of a lover or child or even a part of ourselves. We all understand what it means to lose. And that's what joins us in the very threads of our souls.
