If not Suella Braverman, who can lead the Tories to an election win? | LBC analysis

  • Suella Braverman’s hopes for Tory leadership have encountered an early setback as a key supporter is reportedly preparing to back Robert Jenrick instead.
Although no one has formally launched a campaign to replace Rishi Sunak following the disastrous 4 July election result, Ms Braverman is expected to be a front runner. However, the former Home Secretary’s anticipated campaign has been described as “dead before it has even started,” with right-wing MP Danny Kruger said to support Mr Jenrick.
In a sign of how long the contest could extend, former Business Secretary Kevin Hollinrake stated on Monday that a leadership race could last until the end of the year, adding, “I don’t think there is any rush.”
Tory grandee and former MP Sir Simon Clarke speaks to Andrew Marr about his Party's failure at the General Election and progress for the future.

The Tories lost because, amongst other things, they were incompetent, corrupt and mendacious. They left behind a country where over 200,000 died in the pandemic and where nothing works properly any more.

I agree but I would take that further. I would say that the Tories were FAR TOO incompetent, AND they treated us like fools FOR TOO LONG, AND the other side did not appear to be incompetent. The Tories were incompetent for a long time, and they treated us like fools for a long time, and we still accepted that. But they kept the incompetence and disrespect going further, and eventually they crossed the line. Maybe the Tories would still be in power if Labor were led by Corbyn?

Everyone is wrong on housebuilding: the lack of housebuilding has nothing to do with the planning process or land supply. The housebuilders have built up massive land banks and they are also stockpiling planning permissions. What they have not been doing is building houses! They have been deliberately restricting housebuilding numbers in order to maintain the prices of new houses. In the process, they have largely destroyed the housebuilding workforce, so there is no way for anyone to increase the supply of new houses.

UK politicians both Labour and Tory are delusional that they can make any significant economic impact outside of the EU. Yes, Labour will be better than the tories but it’ll just be a slower rate of descent vs the tory free fall.

It was the Tories that got us in to all the problems we are now living within, but they always say how they will fix them, but they made them in the first place. Its kind of like a Chef making the wrong meal for some one and then blaming it on the poor Kitchen staff, who was following the Chefs orders and instructions in the first place.

At an election an incumbent govt. is judged on it's achievements, not it's promises. Every govt. should attempt to complete a small objective every 6 months, so they have something to stand on if an election is called. Broad promises that never get implemented will never win votes.
