You know you're good when John Petrucci is just strumming chords for you to solo over.
😂
@@bongelerstreamplacelocatio848 I know why u said that...Andy's my fav also & I believe he's incredible but pls don't compare them...they all have different styles, genres, tones etc.
Petrucci is ok but he's never had the over the top creative "otherness... of a govan"., and he knows it.... just listen to his interviews- he's very humble about it. great guy

It's so many freaky good ones out there but you might be right.

I think someone like Vai is hard to impress, or at least admit he's impressed. Tosin has always seemed chill and respectful. The lack of ego with these guys is a tonic.
@@DaveDexterMusic Vai has become a lot more humble in recent years. He even acknowledge he had a big ego in his prime years. Check out his interview with musiciswin
Tosin tried to played Guthrie's Rhode Island Shred on instagram and said something like "i'm probably never be able to play it up to speed lol"
No, and Tosin is a big Guthrie's fan :3
he is a fan boy. goes to Guthrie's workshops whenever possible
It's not really the technical difficulty, it's the amazing beauty of his phrasing.
Agreed
Exactly. His ultra bends and out of the box licks are original. All of them can shred but only Guthrie can make everyone smile and that's a gift.
For sure. He is one of the most technically impressive guitarists on earth in my opinion, but he uses that technical ability to play incredible, unique and musical phrases rather than just shred pentatonic super fast.
Lots of people can speak but not everyone's a poet.
@@stevesalt8003 I like what u said

This hits diferent cause he played it to petrucci, tosin and andy like holyyyyy grail guitar players there
The remarkable thing about Guthrie is that whatever room he’s in or stage he’s playing on, he’s bar-none the best guitarist there
You guys are glorifying them too much. They're good at their craft because they have a drive to excel. They practice a lot and think about what they play. Everyone is capable of that. Guthrie is the dude that makes you go home and rethink guitar from A to Z.
When I lived in Essex I would go to see him play with Zak Barrett and the fellowship.
I thought I was good at guitar back then you see….
I spend many nights driving home having serious thinks to myself about what I just experienced.
It’s an indescribable feeling.
Wanting to quit on the spot yet being so inspired beyond belief, it’s a weird feeling.
Phrasing and note selection are just insane
yeah, that's the thing that makes him unique, his note choices while improvising
I don't know how his mind works, but the way he plays really is like no other

Petrucci being a bro and helping with the backing track while keeping his eyes fixed on greatness and also smiling to the GREAT stuff he just witnessed. Guthrie is incredible.
I think in this event Both guthrie and petrucci killed it. But petrucci isn't such a well versed Improviser. He makes much more amazing Written solos.
@@Moskal91 I agree, but even though you won´t see him play over giants steps at 200 bpm, if you check his improvs with LTE you will notice that he is also a great improviser. He can play over changes for sure, and he is expressive as well, contrary to what many guitarists think.
Electrixguitar99. I agree. Same with Vai as his improvisations are not as good as other players, but a lot his composed stuff is amazing.
@DanielBx not necesarily. Improvizing and performing compositions are two very different skills. As an example, Tosin and Plini are two of the best composers and guitarists of our age, but their improvizational abilities are pretty bad.
He's so good that it's hard to believe he's improvising. Damn that phrasing really sings to your heart.
“You need to learn to enjoy the sound of a scale, before you have any hope of using it effectively. In the same way, you have to learn how to like whiskey, I don’t think many people enjoy their first taste! [laughs] Melodic minor can be like that, but if you listen to enough music where that tonality is featured prominently, you get a sense for it. The notes stop sounding weird. Developing that kind of sensibility comes from bonding with a scale and internalizing it.”
I was fortunate enough to be at this event and I made damn sure to attend every single one of his workshops. The man is absolutely legendary and an entertaining instructor as well; I could listen to him lecture and play all day. Lot of happy legends there, they would be talking about that for a while
All these guitarists are awesome players, and for the most part super humble, nice people. Guthrie is just next level on both fronts, really, is all. He has all the chops of anyone else on stage, but better feel and improvisation. He is my number one, at least of players I've discovered / heard.
i feel the same way dude ! When i first heard Guthrie i hadn't felt that way since i discovered Jason Becker. You should check Matteo Mancuso : jazzy phrasing as Guthrie and a blowing technique since he plays only with his fingers without a pick
Fresh elf pie. Guthrie is so humble , he holds back to keep things in context. It’s like he’s being politically correct where everyone has an even share of the stage. We know he has extra gears, but he won’t engage them for fear of being a show off.
no he doesn't what the fuck are you talking about lmao. Tosin is the king by a light year.
1:35 That expression sharing between Andy and John says How Awesome Guthrie is. Its great to see all the greats there
When Tosin looks stunned at a solo, you know that it was fucking amazing. Man the talent standing on that stage
he has the ability to make you feel as though any note would be the right note. Very subtle but powerful effect of utter mastery over the idea of music itself and his interpretation over music itself. He opens up the playing field in such a way that anything is accessible, there seemingly is absolutely no criticism holding him back, no thoughts, as though he has literally become a guitarist and not a human playing a guitar. That is what makes him so special and unique and a model for everybody, simply considering how little he showed here when in fact he is conversationally fluent as though it were a native speaking language, truthfully
Guthrie Govan is one of the few guitarists that is capable of unparalleled moments of sheer brilliance where I don’t even know how to react, I just start laughing… probably laughing that it’s even possible for someone to pull that out of an instrument. Bravo! 🙌
Guthrie is one of the GOAT's without a doubt! The definition of effortless and the guitar just being truly a part of his anatomy. Also this video shows a big reason why I love Tosin too- because as great and innovative as Tosin is-when he is around a truly amazing guitarist he instantly turns into a fan and student. Just listening and loving it! He also does this in a recent Kiko video. Kiko starts going all 2 handed Brazillian and Tosin just eats it up. Love it! Then he goes and woodsheds and comes up with even more new crazy techniques and amazing stuff without sounding like anyone else. Guthrie and Tosin two of my favs for sure.
We are all lucky to be able to witness the awesome impeccable skills of Guthrie Govan
🤘🤘✌🖖

I am one for blatant virtuosity, and I'm a Metal kind of guy and much of Johns guitar playing just floats my boat, But then there is Guthrie Govan. It's not only his soloing, but his chord voicings when not soloing. Next level.
Imagine having the ability to instantly recall any shape in any key, and then shred it or slow it down all the while keeping it very musical and in touch with the song. Guthrie pours every ounce of his heart, soul, and intellect into everything he plays. A legend he is, one of a kind.
1:55 when the rhythm change keys and everyone is looking at Guthrie wondering whether he'll get out of that one! ... love the Tosin's expression seeing as how Guthrie sailed that key change so gallantly! Master of masters!
This is one of the most beautiful moments in music history
Are you for real?:)))))
I love the original video this is from. All the guitarists play some regular, usual metal solo by shredding minor pentatonics and minor scales and when it's guthrie's turn he comes up with this
Link?
Btw I’ll be interested to know what kind of sonority he plays at the beginning of his solo? probably Lydian I guess, but is there other kind of exotic scale he could be using?
When you see Andy James and Petrucci freezed by Guthrie's performance .... all is said :-)
Andy and Tosin just look like a couple of guys standing there watching...not even thinking about playing their own guitars lol they're fanboys like the rest of us
It's not that they aren't able to repeat it. It's just that Guthrie has an original phrasing and that's a breath of fresh air in the community. That's why they smile because they play quite similar and Guthrie just comes with his crazy bends and sophisticated/out of the box licks.

I love the appreciation between the legendary guitarists, you know it's an improv well done when your peers are enamored by a performance. He's definitely my favorite soloist in that grouping of players. He tells stories I've not ever heard the others do before.
I don’t believe in the notion of there being a “best guitar player in the world.” Every musician approaches his art in his own way.
That said, Guthrie’s ability to speak the language of music at will, even improvised on the spot, is at a level I cannot even comprehend. He doesn’t rely on patterns or scales even at high speed. I love every guitarist on this stage, but none of them could have done what he’s capable of.
Tosin can. He's still #1.
