I like your videos on old prisons.
The tombs one of the most feared places in Manhattan. Even though the tombs was demolished over 100 years ago the Manhattan Detention Centre is called the tombs by those that live in the surrounding areas or those who are unfortunately housed there.
The tombs are referred to in Law and Order.
Worked there for decades then the new one was built and connected in the 1990’s. I never lived anywhere near the area as a CO. 🤷🏼
Yeah it goes pretty deep underground and connect all the buildings and courts in lower Manhattan. It's like an underground city.
I was in their is 1867 ..spent 2 months in their..I'm over 360 years of life.and have to keep changing my name and moving to another country every 50 year's..as to not arise suspicions...I was born the evening of the fire of London..,..I've not met another like me yet though I look..
If you end up in jail in NYC today you definitely deserve to be there.
When I use to watch law and order the tombs were often referred to as. Now I know the history thank you
Got shuffled through the tombs my 21st birthday weekend. Apparently, it's frowned upon to have a trunk full of fireworks for memorial day. 100 center st Manhattan, called the tombs but not sure if its the same building.
Yes, in the basement is what we call the tombs as long as I remember
My mother used to talk about how mad she was when she had to get my father out of what she called the Tombs. My old man was born and raised in Hell’s Kitchen in manhattan.
My grandpa grew up there basically an Irish slum
This channel is a joy to listen to on a beautiful Sunday. I look forward to it
Great! Thanks for being a regular viewer.

love this channel ❤️
When watching old reruns of Barney Miller, they frequently referenced the Tombs and the name made me always think it was a place of sorrows. Being a New Yorker, though not from that part of the state, I never wanted to see it because of this.
Kojak mentioned the Tombs a couple times.

@22:31 "but then, cowards are afraid to tell the truth" Wonderful Video. Thank You.
You’re welcome. Thank you for your comment.
I have never been to New York but I totally recall the cast of Barney Miller referring to sending people, specifically the more mentally ill people to "The Tombs". I always thought I misunderstood what they were saying.
I heard about he Tombs watching Law & Order!
If you get held over for trial in Manhattan, you might still find yourself in the Tombs for a short stay.
Always the best history facts, appreciate ur awsome work. thx

You get tore up, drunk into the dark side. You experience Tom'bs or women's house of detention . I remember people going there in my youth. In the West Village, old school Nyc.
The last part of. Herman Melville’s “Bartleby the Scrivener” takes place in The Tombs. Bartleby seems to succumb to the general gloom of the place more than to any specific maltreatment.
As always iam gathering main information about topics you mentioned briefly here it’s New York tombs prison was built as replacement for colonial era bridewell prison located in city hall park built in 1735 . Prison known as tomb because of Egyptian revival style architecture, but third building referred to as tombs ( Manhattan house of detention. Largest prison in New York is rikers island jail it’s one of largest lockups in USA and , of city most daming problems. Rikers island consisted of ten jails . It’s built on landfall decomposing garbage emits methane gas . Rikers island prison closed in year 2019 replaced four smaller jails more human in design . Thank you for your wonderful cultural documentary channel. Best wishes for you your dearest ones .
Thanks for watching Khatoon.
Rikers is not closed
That building was "found", NOT "built"
And it is much older tha 1830.
It is from the previous civilization.
Orly??!!!😮
I did 40 years there. Got out for good behaviour. Oh how I miss the old place.
At the turn of the Twentieth Century there were upwards of 250 thousand children on the streets of NYC . The statistics speak for themselves! 😮😮😮
250K? Seems unlikely.
Sounds like what the fictional Artful Dodger would call an institution of higher learning.
Riker's prison, I hear, is deadly!
It is
Nobody going to Rikers Island for a vacation
Yeah times havent really changed
Did you watch the video
I could have been first. I just didn't comment but I was first 😅
Snooze, you lose 😊
So
Nope, still don't care. 😅
The Tombs is one of my "alma maters." 😂🤣 Been locked in the Tombs, many times.
Did you graduate from there with a degree or a doctorate? 😅😂
Funny clams and shellfish once given to the prisoners in a place like this
are now taken over by rich people and too expensive for any poor person let alone a prisoner
and oh ya, first 😊
I thought streets of America paved with gold?
😂
I spent a few nights there awhile back it’s not Luxurious IMO!
Criminals simply because of their social conditions...who would've thunk it?! 😐
been there ! 100 Centre street NY NY. it might be 110 centre ...
Human hate that time same as now 2024. Same drum beat different century
