- Just got this guitar and wanted to share. First impression is that it's a cool guitar with a distinct retro vibe, good playability, a focused, slightly boxy (but in a cool way) tone - like most concert sized acoustics. Fishman pickup system is good (though I'll be putting a MiniFlex 2Mic in it). One word of warning - it is a relatively quiet guitar. Fairly balanced, but quiet. My guess is that it will record very well, but string squeaks might be a bit more to contend with. I'll try to shoot another video with a good mic setup after a week or two getting used to it.
I love these guys who always say they're going to put up a better video later...better audio, blah, blah, blah. Then they disappear for 28 years.
Gary Spong I love this guys who always comment and then be gone for 6 years lol
He's back and better than ever 👍🏻
Just got this guitar and I absolutely love it. Sounds amazing. PERFECT for what I like to play. He's right the high end is great and that's exactly what you need play some nice 2tone SKA tunes. Sounds just as good when your strumming hard and playing punk. Make sense that Tim Armstrong designed it. Just an all around great little acoustic and the look and finish is so classic and perfect.
Dude, the audio is seriously fine. Great note clarity, also. I'm impressed enough to want to get one.
Great review.
I just bought this guitar about an hour ago. It plays really well. Definitely recommend it!
Just bought it today tried a bunch out for hours walked away with this one! Nice guitar for the$$ definitely recommend
Great job reviewing this and you hit all the important aspects. Nice playing too
Cool review, had my lefty hellcat for 6 years and its been solid as a rock. I ripped out the piezo, installed a new bone nut and saddle with some lighter strings, it sounds and plays awesome set up correctly.
It sounds weak acoustically because of the fishman under saddle pickup. That pickup absorbs most of the vibrations of the strings so that they are not trqnsferred to the top. Plugged in it is amazing sounding. I am going to remove the fishman undersaddle pickup and install a lloyd baggs saddle pickup in it so all the vibrations are sent to the top and the sound acoustically will come alive.
Playing Bossa Nova with Tim Armstrong's guitar!! Amazing!
Very informative demo helpful to people considering it, very astute of you to play jazz chords on this come through really well because the mahogany's natural darker response fits that style of music really well.
THanks!
Just bought that guitar a couple of weeks ago, new strings will make a difference! Not a huge one, but noticeable and nice. I've been playing it everyday, love it! :)
I know you wrote this 12 years ago but what strings did you replace them with? Thanks
Wow that was an excellent review, you explained everything very clearly. Nice playing too!
This is got to be the best steel string guitar in its price range
The original model is a Fender F-1030 made by Harmony (H165) in the late 60s/early 70s.
played on at guitar center this morning, it even sounds very transparent plugged in, crank the volume, EQ set flat at 12 o'clock, and then the amp set flat, great plugged in sound.
Nice review and demo. Thanks for sharing.
I agree. The guitar sounds great!
amazing guitar! JUst got it and im absolutely loving it!!! IT's such an upgrade from my old guitar
Yeah, peace indeed. Nice licks.
Bought this guitar based on your review. Very happy with it. Even the cat logos!
Sounds good .Fender acoustics are way underrated I think.I have two and they stay in tune and came set up better than my Guild and Gretsch Rancher. As long as they stay underrated and relatively inexpensive ..I'm happy
One more thing: after seeing your clip, I ordered one !! Fender & Guitar Center owe you a couple of dollars !!
Great review. More info then I expected. Thanks again
Love Tim, Rancid, Op Ivy, the shape, finish, pick guard, headstock, and sound --- but I couldn't get past the travesty of those inlays. A shame. Good playing, man.
A good recording mic is the thing.
I see many demo clips on you tube that suck just because of bad mics being used.
Yours sound great. So probably the guitar would sound great too in real life.
Your getting some nice sounds for the first day.
I have a black one. Doesn't have the hellcat inlays. I like it.👊

THE MOST RELAXING 5 SECONDS OF MY LIFE
It is one fine Guitar for the price.
great playing...it's refreshing to hear a review where the player has skill and tastefulness. Too often, RUclips reviews are by players who have yet to even figure out how to tune a guitar well. How fat is the neck...like a Les Paul or what?
Best Review Ever... you play really good \m/ sounds delicious!
Great playing man
Thanks, looking at this one seriously, this helps.
dude I love this guitar. I lost my other fender in a recent flood in Calgary Canada :(
Studioand everything.. my whole place. but its good to have a guitar again
I paid 450$ Canadian for this
Thank you for this review. I just might pick one up.
HAHAH! Rog, I was looking at reviews and picked this one by chance. Wait...I know that guy!!
The wood looks awesome! The headstock too. The inlays are my least favorite about the guitar but a fairly great guitar
you're damn good with the guitar man... fkin amazing u r
I have this guitar, it's very nice, I like it :))
Great sound. Good guitar/
Helpful.... Thank you !
those strings sound glorious. When I got mine, the strings weren't that crisp.
hey I know you upped this video many years ago. But was wondering on if you can comment on what gauge strings you think these are most at home with?
I currently play an all mahogany Martin 000 copy with 13-56 strings. I need the heavy strings to be heard in jams and the guitar suits it lighter gauges wouldn't get the soundboard moving enough.
But I'd like a guitar for fingerpicking and amplified performances. So something that would be at home with lighter strings.
I've played Taylor's before and feel they favour lighter strings than Martins.
What gauge do you think the hellcat favours?
I normally use Elixir Lights, so .012-.053. And with those it feels and sounds nice IMO.
I put Elixir extra light on it. PERFECT
I bought one used, it's o.k. but the action is terrible on mine, what's yours like? it seems to be very good....
@jobrosndemi ok, i will buy it before august, when i have it, i will post a "review" video to show it
Can you get a warm tone by using a good preamp setting, in your opinion?
Kool review , they want 580 bucks here in Australia ? Listening to your review this sounds ok , your thoughts.....??????
i bought one used for $200, I wouldn't pay more than that.....it's not that good really.
Thinking about buying this. Should I?
what's the second song you played sounded soo chill
Did you put any special strings on that guitar ?? The sound coming out of your model seems a bit less trebly than some other clips I've seen on RUclips
@jobrosndemi thanks. what do you mean with "hard to put down"?
sorry, i don't speak english very well.
How do you change the battery on the tuner/pickups... do you have to loosen the strings and go through the body?
Bryan McCloud it has a compartment next to the input jack
A laminate mahogany top on a parlor guitar sounds like it would be way too bright. It would not be terrible for a lead guitar or perhaps blues, but if you want to have a nice strumming guitar you need a solid spruce top and a normal sized body.
im having a slight buzz on 12th fret of low E string did you changed your strings? :) any way i like this giitar
@jobrosndemi ok, i understand. thanks.
the strap that comes with is good? or only low quality merch.?
So where is this second video ? :)
i'm doubting in this one, or the epiphone acoustic john lennon signature (ej-160e)
any idea?
Just traded in my takamini d series for one of these, cheers
What happened to recording better quality?
I almost bought this but I hate those damn cats on the neck. Liked everything else about it.
its good this guitar for fingerstyle? its 000 or auditorium?
Does it have a smooth natural neck/satin or is it lacquered?
@jobrosndemi yeah, i have an amp, but its not very good, a "samick" amp, it comes with an old washburg that i don't still having (remember my bad english xD)
Was the guitar hooked up to an amp for this video or were ya playing it on its own?
can i just say that its not a quiet guitar... its just the gague string hes using.. lights are gnerally quieter than medium to heavy strings ^^
do you recommend this for live preformances?
What song were you playing around 1:30
Do you have tab for that part?
it this guitar neck confortable ?
I think it's pretty comfortable (up until you get to the heel). The finish looks semi-gloss, but it feels a bit more "matte" than it looks. I think in, general, it feels a bit more like a fat electric neck than my other acoustics. But they're all vastly different, so that's a big generalization.
@FreshRigs electric-acoustic
Action Jackson or slick Rick
Mine must have been a duff one because I cannot stand it, feels horrible to play went back to my old one after about a week or so of playing it
Price?
how long you been playing
"I'm not much of an acoustic player...."
too bad its not all solid wood Ive got a ESV !0 its superb
2:02
is this electric?
I couldn't tell your english is bad :)
Whats that beautiful song ^×^ some email me or tell me now
Just messing around, no song really.
Nice $200 guitar. lol.
When you say fat neck just how fat do you mean? Maybe next time a better shot of the neck. I would encourage to you show us some of those chord moves because there great.
What do you start playing at 1:25?
