CodyHGaming You forgot to mention that NR2003 was a rushed game. Sierra lost the license for NASCAR games shortly before release to EA in a rather unexpected move so this game had to be rushed out before that license expired. It’s also why Sierra officially released very few updates for the game unlike NR2002 and NASCAR 4. To me, that makes NR2003 an even more incredible achievement in that so much framework and in a way, future proofing of the game via making it easy to create mods and new assets for the game was done so it would live on and still be the definitive NASCAR game 15 years later.
To be fair, the oval racing in rF2 was tacked on like it was in Project Cars 2 (although at least rF2 has oval flag rules.) When it comes to everything else, however, rF2 is pretty much the end-all-be-all at least in terms of the road racing AI and baseline physics model which, unfortunately, not many mods take advantage of. Having said that, my favorite sims as of now would have to be: NR2003 Richard Burns Rally (which is basically the rally equivalent of NR2003 in almost every way) Project Cars 2 (well, it's mixed. At times I love it, and at times it annoys me) Assetto Corsa (with mods. The Race Sim Studios early-00s GT1 payware mod is excellent and worth the money.) There's also Raceroom Racing Experience, but I only ever race GTO, Group A, and DTM 1992 in that.
My god... has it really been 15 years? That's insane. Feels like it wasn't that long ago when my dad bought me the game and I was booting around Daytona on the old Momo wheel. You hit the nail right on the head with this video, man. It's a great summary of everything I love about NR2003 and everything that makes it so much more special than every other driving sim. The death of Papyrus has only further cemented this piece of history. Simply the greatest of all time.
I'm seriously starting to wonder if we'll ever see another NASCAR game of this quality. With every new modern NASCAR game released, I'm appreciating Nr2003 a little more. It's almost like Papyrus were magicians or something.
look up what, where, how, & when the word papyrus comes from. Interesting stuff. Maybe there is some magic. Then follow the rabbit hole to what exactly are computer chips & processors & how they are made. And don't tell me its 1's & 0's cuz its more than that. I honestly don't think many people in the world actually know how a complex computing devices truly function. I believe that knowledge is more than "top secret"
@@jaredkinneyjr “don’t tell me it’s 1’s & 0’s” “top secret” 😂🤦♂️ there are hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of people with computer science degrees, that have learned how computers are created and how they operate. There are a multitude of free resources you can use to learn these things as well. Computers are made and used in practically every country in the world, so there’s nothing top secret about it. Btw, 1’s & 0’s just represent two states: ON and OFF. That’s how all electric signals are interpreted at the most basic level.
@@Comrade_Broski I'm saying exactly that but did those people create the micro processors like a pentium iCore. I know the statement sounds very dumb on the face of it but I'm talking about what are atoms doing inside processors & can these scientists, whoever they are, verify what is really going inside something they cannot create was my question. There is always "textbook" answer to how everything around us works but I say I don't trust those textbooks unless verifiable with my own eyes or experience. My thought is something magical happens inside a computer that not many people even know exists, literal magic. Mainstream science does not want people to believe in magic in any variation. Everything they teach is destroy magic as if to say science has solved everything, which clearly it hasn't & cannot.
This game is the reason I started my RUclips channel and made all of the friends I have over the years and it truly holds a special place in my heart. Absolutely one of the greatest racing simulators of all time.
My all time favorite game. I ran in so many amazing leagues throughout the years, Solstice, Masgrafx, Openspeedway, CRI, ran with talents like Justin Brooks, Parker Hammons, David Krikorian, Caleb Paul, Shawn Taylor, etc ran in multiple leagues and races with Josh Berry, Dale Jr, (got into a good ole flame war once with a guy named Brad Keselowski) designed cars for Nascarnet, SRD, the list goes on with this game and the time I personally put into it. I wish I could get myself back in there.
When I was young I never knew how lucky I was to play these games. Never thought in a million years these early years would be the peak of gaming. Makes me so sad.
I can't believe it's been 17 years!! I'll never forget being at the store buying this game and couldn't wait to get home so I could race!! Had some really great online racing!!
Greatest game ever. My grandpa picked it up new back when it was released, still plays it today. I started playing a few years ago, and I still love it as much as the first time I started playing it. If you don't have this, I strongly suggest you get it. You won't regret it
I just found my old copy from back then still in the case, and in great shape, in my garage. I almost cried because I know how pricey it is these days. I intend to preserve this piece of gaming history forever
As a 14 year Veteran of this game from within a Great Racing league I want to thank you for a great video and 15 great reasons for this game...FSBracing.com still going strong after all this time.
I used to play the first and the second NASCAR games by Papyrus hours and hours. When this one came out, I remember drooling over the screenshots on the game magazine, but my computer wasn't powerful enough to run it. Then I got away from computer games as I got older, and never really had a chance to play this. I think I'll go back to this now after... 17 years. I can't believe it, it's been that long.
I haven’t played it in 10 years. This video brings back all the frustration and all the gratitude of learning on your own and testing and testing and testing well you get the point. A true you against your self game. I played others but nothing compares.
Since 2003..Goosepumps everytime.. Get ready now..Going green. *Engines start to roar up* Green flag, green flag, green green green!! And youre just like..*Lets do this!* I really loved the commentator,a lot of nascar games didnt bring back that feel ever since.
I bought this game in 2003 when it came out, and I still play it almost every day. Every time I've had to buy a new computer it's been the first thing I've installed on it, holding my breath that at some point the code will be too old to use (which it hasn't yet!) 18 years now (!!) is incredible longevity for a game/simulation, and you've nailed all the best reasons why it's managed to live so long. Well done.
been racing NR2003 back in the days, did my first online championship back in 2004 with JJ's 48 Lowes and used the amazing spotter sound pack of Chad Knaus (Jimmie's spotter)... I still remember one of his lines right after you reached 1st position during the race "clean air buddy..." . We still ran 55k modems and eventually saved enough money to buy the luxurious Logitech Momo wheel. I remember studying from this book-like guide about setting up a stock car at my aunties house right after xmas lunch and record every Nascar race on VHS to grasp any tip possible from the guys racing at that time. Fell in love with stock cars since then and still consider one of my top 3 sexiest race cars even nowadays. And that sound...Long Live NR2003
The thing that I loved the best about the game was the online community. Different race leagues having their own hangout servers, going in, trying to get recruited, seeing a group from another team joining and challenging you... all that was great. While the online racing that we have is great, I will miss the good old hyperactive chatbox in game. And who can forget the general chat in the server finder? Drama and intrigue for ages, and iRacing will never have that, for better or worse.
NR2003 is the best racing game i have ever laid eyes upon. its sort like love at first sight but its more of a "i need this game in my life" kind of situation. none the less its an amazing game and to see it still standing today makes you wonder how amazing must the community be to keep this relic alive.
From the UK, don't know how I even got this game so many years ago but I remember playing it and loving it. Thought I would track it down as could not remember what year it was. Loved being in amongst all the action, amazing how they made this game so good in 2003, I remember staying out way too long many a time when my tyres were shot.
I still have NR2003 on my computer and it is a great Game/Sim,But I have made my way over to iRacing in January. But we still have a server up in NR2003(Patriot Racing) which is now being taken care of by CCR Ace(A great guy). And we have the Saturday Night Live Trucks every weekend. Plus we also run Saturday Night Live Trucks going on in iRacing to every weekend. So check us out on Facebook and the iRacing directory.
I would love to play some Nascar 2003 with you guys, I am not great at it but let's try. At least on ovals it's quite easy to keep car on track, only problem is overtaking
Wow!!!... This brought back alot of old memories... This game gave me some of the best friends I never got to meet in person... I spent my years under the gamer tag XMoDe on the Open Speedway Servers... I miss those times dearly... Would give alot to bring those days back... I was on the website a few years back and was saddened to see some of the guys I used to race with had passed away... Really puts the age of this game into perspective... Thank you so much for making this video and bringing a smile to my face and letting me re-live some of the greatest memories of my childhood.
Openspeedway is still going~ Gordo runs the server now~ Several of the guys from way back still come in and race~ I just got back into the game after being away since 2010~ Let me know if you'd be interested in getting things up and running again~ I'm sure the guys would love to see another racer from the past back in the server again~
The best game I ever brought for myself, you are involved with a great community, take part in series and the customisation is incredible. Thank you papyrus, the community and NR2003 what a game
I lost my old copy of nr2003 and thought I'd never be able to afford it again. I found a copy still sealed for $59 on ebay a few days ago and immediately jumped on it
I love this game! If I had a computer that could still play this game...I would STILL be PLAYING this game! This game taught me about 'gear ratios' and 'wedge' and 'suspension' and 'tire pressure'....and patience, Lots and Lots of patience.........
I've just downloaded NR2003 and oh boy what memories, this game runs super smooth and still love it. I didn't knew that there are so many mods for this game, its just incredible I cant wait to try some, the only problem is were and which one I should start.
In my opinion, NR2003 also had the single best AI for Offline Racing, ever seen in a racing game. Great video, still modding NR2003 to this day and enjoying it with my buddies. Keep up the great work.
One of the reasons i love this game is the fact you can say race the 98 cars (my first racing game was nascar 99 so sometimes i sim races like it. Like with 24 cars etc)
The reason I love it so much is that I dont have to wait till the 15th minute of each hour to do a truck race like I do on iracing. Or the fact that I can race any car and get a full field.
For me #16: You can turn on the visible interior/exterior in rear view mirror for more immersion. Such small detail that made such big difference for me. Where else (except ETS/ATS na iRacing ofc) can you do that. Thank you very much for great content.
I gave NR2003 a chance thanks to your video, and it really is the best Nascar game of all, and one of the best driving games ever, THANK YOU for making this video !
Awesome video. I've never owned nr2003, but I'm going to buy the hard copy soon. Because of your awesome videos, it makes me want to get in on the fun!
Fun fact: This game actually BROKE my Force Feedback way back when! Turn 3 at Talladega, I hear a loud *pop*, and then nothing haha. Now I play with a 360 controller.
Great video you've put together here my friend! My IRacing expired yesterday and now seeing how strong the NR2003 community is, I won't be going back anytime soon. I've already reinstalled my original game, patches and all, that is running smoothly on my Windows 10 machine. Thanks for taking the time to put such a great video together!
Do you ever race at Openspeedway?~ They race Sun, Mon, Wed, and Friday nights around 10 pm EST~ Sunday is the cts09 trucks, and the rest are BRGen6 races~
God damn, didn't realize this game was still going this strong with new mods. Seems like forever since all the cease and desist letters going out from iRacing. Made many good memories and friends through this game. Rip SimTel Racing League. Wonder if my old GMC Sierra template is still floating around for the trucks.
Thanks for the upload. NR2003 is probably my favorite racing sim of all time. I remember staying up all night running Talladega/Daytona 21 lap MP races. I still have my Logitech FF Momo wheel. I remember buying it the first day it was released. I learned to build computers because of this game. my 1st pc wasn't powerful enough to run it. are they still running servers of this game? opps you answered that at 13. Would a momo still be ok for this game? Would you believe I've seen about 200 sealed NR 2003 games around 2006 at my work. They were just giving them away...I grabbed a few. maybe they even threw them out.
To be honest I think nr2003 iRacing and any of the Papyrus (iRacing) should be put in their own category because they have created the greatest nascar games on the market, and based on the record that NASCAR gaming has had in the past 13 years, no other dev. is gonna get even close to these simulators.
I picked up a copy with the manual at my local thrift store today for $3 I had no idea what it was but it a pretty cool looking PC game for only $3 so I couldn't say no
28 August 2022: just installed it's original CD a few hrs ago, still have to play it, can't wait to test it with the new wheel i bought a coupla months ago (G29). Played it many years ago with a Thrustmaster GT Force feedback, loved every race and crash performed. I wonder if there's a VR mod for it...
I started racing online in the mid 90s when it was NASCAR Racing 2. Had the force feedback wheel and pedals and a 16" monitor that needed its own table to sit on. But, I found I was spending WAY too much time playing the game. I'm sure there were weeks I spent 40-50 hours in the game and when I realized that, I walked away from it. Sold my wheel and pedals, sold the game CD and moved on. I do miss it, but I'm not going back. As of now, I don't have a single game on my computer other than the ones that come with Windows and I never play them.
After watching this video, I definitely need to play this game since I have the previous game (NR2002Season) and I didn't get a chance to play NR2003Season. Great video!
I raced many hours online and offline with NR2003 when it came out and I agree with that it is a great Nascar Racing game. I was in 3 private leagues on the FREE Siearra Servers (gone now). What is nice about NR2003 is it installs and works on my Windows 10 gaming PC. I haven't brought the game up for a while, but with VORPX I can somewhat use my VR headset with the game. I can't remember how well VR works, but when I bring up NR2003 again, I will leave a reply about using VR. I have the standard Nascar plus and Indycar mod that I can switch to. Both I enjoy racing the many Ovals and Road tracks. There is one limit on NR2003 which is the number of installed tracks the game can have at one time. Unless if someone changed that. We shall see in 2025 if IRacing and another company develops a Nascar game that can outdo how NR2003 operates. And what the initial STEAM price will be to get the game. Also would they do DLC content addons costing as much as online IRacing content. Time shall Tell what this new game brings to the table. Thanks for the video and take care.
NR2003 is one of the best examples of how the ability to mod games can mean that a game can last so much longer than if the ability to mod was restricted
704 gamed should do a remake of the game with all the mods included, eras, tracks all of that with NH2 graphics and you got THE GREATEST RACING GAME EVER
It wouldn't be the same though. It would just be like their Heat games except with a different title. Don't get me wrong, I like Heat 2 as a fun, casual NASCAR game, but it would be pointless to develope a remake.
3:57 And that destroyed the front end of Newman's car! 4:10 AND THE BIG ONE HAPPENS BEHIND 'EM! 7:04 Oh yeah! 7:16 The most spectacular pileup in Auto Racing History takes 37 cars out of the race!
NR2003 is to stock car racing as Richard Burns Rally is to rally games, it's the reference that all other games are measured to. Let's hope NASCAR Ignition 21 is at least better than Heat. And I agree with all the points in the analysis, cheers from Brazil.

HAPPY 15TH ANIVERSARY NASCAR RACING 2003 SEASON!!! THE BEST NASCAR GAME EVER!!!!!
If you have a computer it will run on it. search and download it and install and race once again!😃
Bought it yesterday. God I love this.
3:56 this Edwards' looked so realistic!
I still play this game in 2020, this game was so ahead of its time!
Excellent video. I still play it to this day, it's still the best NASCAR sim to date.
Still an amazing sim, 15 years later. NR2003 rocks!
This sold me on it. Gunna grab a copy now. Thanks.
One of the reasons i love this game is the fact you can say race the 98 cars (my first racing game was nascar 99 so sometimes i sim races like it. Like with 24 cars etc)
18 years later now
I've had the game since I got my first computer in Christmas 2007. To this day, I still play the game
The reason I love it so much is that I dont have to wait till the 15th minute of each hour to do a truck race like I do on iracing. Or the fact that I can race any car and get a full field.
Great video Cody, very well done.
For me #16: You can turn on the visible interior/exterior in rear view mirror for more immersion. Such small detail that made such big difference for me. Where else (except ETS/ATS na iRacing ofc) can you do that. Thank you very much for great content.
I gave NR2003 a chance thanks to your video, and it really is the best Nascar game of all,
and one of the best driving games ever, THANK YOU for making this video !
I remember getting this game as a gift for Christmas. Tried to run it on my laptop. Didn’t work. I was SO bummed
Everything about nr2003 makes me want to play this game
I have it
JCostelloracing60 me 22
Awesome video. I've never owned nr2003, but I'm going to buy the hard copy soon. Because of your awesome videos, it makes me want to get in on the fun!
Amazing video Cody. It's like taking a tour across a big and awesome game!
The BEST Nascar game ever made!
Fun fact: This game actually BROKE my Force Feedback way back when! Turn 3 at Talladega, I hear a loud *pop*, and then nothing haha. Now I play with a 360 controller.
I can’t be the only one who likes games that are not as graphically impressive as the stuff we have today. I like games with “bad” graphics lol.
1:46 oh boy the "pass" in the grass.
19 yrs and 2 months remaing to be its 20th yrs of this game was a still masterpiece. game mods would gettin bigger and better
I just bought this game today after wanting it for so long. Thank you so much for this video, I can't wait to experience this game
Where did you get it from?
I have a lot of fun just in collecting all of these mods together. This game is great times.
18 Years Ago..................................................................Little did we know that this game would be a MASTERPIECE!!!!!!
Download RLM Arena, and there are lots of servers there to join~ I usually race in the Openspeedway server~
To be honest I think nr2003 iRacing and any of the Papyrus (iRacing) should be put in their own category because they have created the greatest nascar games on the market, and based on the record that NASCAR gaming has had in the past 13 years, no other dev. is gonna get even close to these simulators.
I picked up a copy with the manual at my local thrift store today for $3 I had no idea what it was but it a pretty cool looking PC game for only $3 so I couldn't say no
Do you ever play online?~
28 August 2022: just installed it's original CD a few hrs ago, still have to play it, can't wait to test it with the new wheel i bought a coupla months ago (G29). Played it many years ago with a Thrustmaster GT Force feedback, loved every race and crash performed.
I wonder if there's a VR mod for it...
Same with NT2004, its still a great game to this day. It was also released in 2003, so NR2003 was released The same year, the best two nascar games.
All I can say about this is Noice video, noice community, noice game.
And rip ccm if you have Win10, like me.
*Nice
even after 2 years, this video is still a masterpiece.
Best Nascar game. Thanks to the community which has made it even better.
Okay fine! I'm downloading it!! Great video
Thanks for posting, you are 100 percent right, and thanks for your work making this vid
Excellent video. This sequence paired with your voice reminded me of the tutorial videos that come with the actual game itself!
You could even play what was supposed to be "Nascar 2009 The Game", the never planned game!
After watching this video, I definitely need to play this game since I have the previous game (NR2002Season) and I didn't get a chance to play NR2003Season. Great video!
It’s kind of crazy we modded the game graphics so much that we are bringing it up to NASCAR Heat level graphics.
Just imagine if we had a Nascar game with iracings physics nr2003s diversity and price and forzas graphics
2:55 thought you said the moon of Sega, man that would be the dream
That's why I like nr2003 season 👍🏁💯
I feel this way about NASCAR Thunder 2004
Now going on 20 years strong
NR2003 is one of the best examples of how the ability to mod games can mean that a game can last so much longer than if the ability to mod was restricted
I want to play this real bad to play from my favorite 1998-2001 Winston cup seasons. I only have a MacBook Air though.
How about using Bootcamp?
704 gamed should do a remake of the game with all the mods included, eras, tracks all of that with NH2 graphics and you got THE GREATEST RACING GAME EVER
Danger Zone it wasn't made by 704 games so that would never happen
but if they licenced the NASCAR HEAT title, they could in theory licence the NR title
yeah they would probably ruin nr
It wouldn't be the same though. It would just be like their Heat games except with a different title. Don't get me wrong, I like Heat 2 as a fun, casual NASCAR game, but it would be pointless to develope a remake.
meh, nr would be ruined
AWESOME Video & Commentary TOTALLY AGREE With Everything!!! Would love to show your video on my homepage if allowed.
3:57
And that destroyed the front end of Newman's car!
4:10
AND THE BIG ONE HAPPENS BEHIND 'EM!
7:04
Oh yeah!
7:16
The most spectacular pileup in Auto Racing History takes 37 cars out of the race!
NR2003 is to stock car racing as Richard Burns Rally is to rally games, it's the reference that all other games are measured to. Let's hope NASCAR Ignition 21 is at least better than Heat. And I agree with all the points in the analysis, cheers from Brazil.
Great video Cody, you really nailed the amazing aspects of the sim!
nice showin of cns, favroite track ever
Dude thats awesome that you got the earnheardt save in the tri oval at daytona. at least i think it was daytona
