    Something else I noticed about this scene that I haven't seen anyone else talking about: one of the last bits of advice Peter gives Miles is to never let anyone see his face. It's one of the most important rules about being Spider-Man. What's the first thing Kingpin does when he's got Spidey pinned down? He unmasks him.

    Kingpin has been done very well in all three of the latest big-screen (or Netflix) incarnations. Yes, even the disastrous Daredevil movie where Michael Clark Duncan as Kingpin. He was, by FAR, the best part of that movie. To a degree where I think it's acceptable to talk about MCD as Kingpin in the same discussion as Raul Julia as M Bison from Street Fighter. (Raul Julia as M Bison is clearly superior, but MCD makes Daredevil bearable and even, dare I say it, enjoyable.) He ruled the Underworld with an steel hand, but he wasn't outright "Evil" - the world needed strong leaders willing to do hard things, and he was that strong leader willing to do hard things. And fell into Darkness because of it.
    The Netflix Kingpin was a different take on the Kingpin - more of an Abused Child who is trying to make the World a Better Place but Doesn't Understand The Damage He's Doing, then Ends Up Embracing his Darkness - but the performance was absolutely riveting, and in the end I came to admire the risks the writers took with him.
    And this Kingpin was likewise riveting - willing to destroy an infinite number of worlds to bring his family back to him. It wasn't Power or Wealth he wanted... he just wanted his family back.
    These writers understand the Kingpin. They may not understand many other Marvel villains, but they get Kingpin.

      Ohh wow, I don't really see any appreciation for the Kingpin in the Ben Affleck Daredevil, so this was a very interesting read :) It really is interesting seeing all the different takes on the character, but at the end of the day, they all share a commonality of just being ruthlessly evil with a complicated past.

      Not to mention as far as superpowers go their only "thing" is being super strong which they don't even use most of the time, relying instead on it playing into their indication factor, with their main power being ruthless cunning and often a master of the Xanatos gambit wherein they plan stuff out that no matter what happens they win on some level and more often than not get away with it with the heroes unable to do anything. Heck in the comics DD literally helps Kingpin get back in charge after realizing without his presence as an apex criminal predator the crime scene became even worse.

      One line from MCD's Kingpin that stuck with me was, "Nobody's innocent. Nobody."
      That moment solidified that he believes he can justify killing someone because deep down they're not innocent. They're innocence is a deception.

    When he's introduced, Kingpin is so huge he basically acts as a framing device. He always takes up the majority of screen space in every shot that includes him, pushing every other character to the side.
    This continues for the entire movie, right up until the scene at the end where he's in the train begging his family to come back. In that single scene his bulk is hidden from us, instead all we see is his face framed by a window. Then the camera zooms out, and suddenly he seems so... _small._

    This movie just was full of iconic villains (doc ock, prowler) and yet this Kingpin dominated them all ... his character design I feel was stylized that way to show how he was larger than life, a massive looming shadow on Miles ' psyche. It reflected how this scene struck Miles at the time, as you pointed out, the pov of the scene being Miles let it focus on the fear and chaos instead of the fun quips from Spidey's POV.

    what blows my mind with this film is that the more you look, the more depth you find. Why is Fisk wearing a black suit, where most classic depictions of the Kingpin have him wearing white? *He's in mourning.* Why does the Kingpin hedge his bets on a weird science machine, given that all incarnations of this character have been mobsters first and foremost, with supervillain stuff secondary to his making money? Because of the one exception: the one thing that matters to *every* version of Fisk, across the cartoon series, the Daredevil series and the comics, is his family. Richard and Vanessa are always his *one* emotional weakness. It's what undoes him in the cartoon series, what drives him to crazier and crazier schemes in the comics and Vanessa is the reason for his reckless actions in Daredevil. From the moment I saw him in the introductory scene, and saw that Spiderverse's Kingpin was doing some unsafe, unprofitable weird science supervillain stuff, *I knew* that *something* must have happened with Richard & Vanessa, because there's nothing else in the multiverse that would make Wilson fucking Fisk make an unsafe investment like that.
    Not only is Spiderverse a great movie on its own, but it's so masterfully written that its characters are perfectly consistent with all other iterations of themselves. Think about the Prowler episode in the spider-man cartoon from the 90s. There, as in Spiderverse, Aaron makes a deal with Kingpin for a suit and powers, and becomes trapped in a cycle of violence. There, as in Spiderverse, the one thing that gets him out of it is his love for his family.
    Characters remain the same even across iterations of the multiverse. I could go on and on, because this movie is incredible.

      Wow o.O Very well said! I didn't pick up on the reason for Kingpin wearing black, and I think that's a really cool detail now haha. This analysis was amazing! I do find that this movie had some very good villains that were complex. Both the prowler and Kingpin had their own characters and you could *almost* sympathise with them. That’s when you know a movie hits home, when you actually feel emotion towards the villain or their actions.

    • @Machuw
      @Machuw  3 года назад +1

      The best villains are the one's with a lot of emotion and complexity to them tbh. Kingpin isn't even in the movie allll that much, which I think is a bigger testament to him as the writers were able to do a lot with very little in terms of characterization :)

  • @dragonking322
    @dragonking322 3 года назад +15

    there's alot that can be talked about when it comes to the storytelling of this movie. For example, The framerate changing from 12fps to 24? It's something unnerving to see at the begining, somethings not right and you can't really put your finger on it. Much like what miles is experiencing at the start of the movie. He's unsure of himself and the world around him, he doesn't fit in, and most importantly he's not living up to his potential. After he gets his powers though and goes through his hero's journey he slowly start's to become more fluid, he fits into his world better, he understands it better the world itself isn't so jarring. The first time i watched this movie that's all i could think about. The subtle storytelling that experimenting with framerate could pull off and how well that endeared the character to me. Into the spiderverse deserves to be recognized for it's genius and nonconvention style of story telling. It by itself is a masterclass in cinematography and storytelling through art.

    Also, you somehow didn't mention the raw emotion displayed in Kingpin's face the instant after Spidey says it won't work. That alone, I feel, says more than you did in seven minutes, and more than I could in the same time. Like... it's just so good, the brief flash of reflection, the questions he's asking himself, the reassurance to himself that he is only doing what he must, the rage that then bolsters it and then finally his reason flying out of the window as he prepares to swing. All of that in a few seconds, so immaculately captured.

    The scene gets worse(better?) when you consider the sequel introduces the concept of “canon,” events that keep repeating across every universe. As a result of this one action, that is Kingpin being seen beating up Miles in the collider by every version of his family across the multiverse, he’s inadvertently driving all of them to the same end, at the same time. He created his own canon event. It makes his actions that much worse.

    Justice League Dark: Apokolips War wasn't really a subversion, it's only a subversion if you watched it in a vacuum and didn't consider the previous films in the series. The DCAU starting with Flashpoint Paradox was a series of films that told a narrative across many films. Some of the films were more "standalone" than others, but to watch Apokolips War without the context of previous films would make it seem very "subversive" indeed. "The Death of Superman" setup Doomsday and "Reign of the Supermen" gave us clues as to what Darkseid was up to, all of the people who were subverted by the Doomsday Parademons probably weren't aware of the previous films/didn't watch them. Actually, the ending of Apokolips War was literally making the point that no matter what, Barry would always have to reset the timeline, something DC has done on multiple occasions, and doesn't seem to stop doing. Barry created the DCAU's New52 Timeline, Barry also ended it. But I guess none of this is worth talking about.. Is it?

      I mean I like Thanos, Killmonger, Loki, Zemo and Mysterio but that's basically it out of the entire MCU tbh

      @@Machuw I don't get how you're not too keen on any of them they all had great back stories and great personalities and definitely were 3 dimensional villains I feel ever sense Baron Zemo most MCU villains have been amazing to bare minimum good with the exception of Jude Law in Captain Marvel

      @@captainjakemerica4579 Maybe Ego and Hela are lame, because they both die at the end.
