I remember getting with my birthday money around that time. You are right. I can't count how many times I played it and beaten it. It's one of my favorite videogames of all time. A masterclass of level design, music and storytelling in a platform game. And when Sonic and Knuckles came later and I snapped that cartridge on it, it was the best experience I ever had on the Sega Genesis. Especially seeing and hearing Sky Sanctuary Zone that first time. It was so epic. Never played a platform like Sonic 3 and Knuckles again. That's why I could never understand why some people think Sonic 2 was better. Made no sense to me
The music during the Metal Sonic Hyperdrive bossfight is actually from a game called Granada by Wolfteam. Highly recommend you check it out; the Genesis/MD version is certainly the best version.
seeing all of these edited together really remind me how "next gen" Sonic was when it released in '91. It's easy to remember it as Sega's mascot game or the game that vaulted them as a player in the home console market, but it was also a technical marvel compared to what was previously available for home consoles. Sonic 2 was enough of a jump over the original that it was also a technical marvel a year later.
Very good stuff. Played most of them. Ond notable hack I'd like to bring up is Sonic Next Level. Its only one zone (3 acts) long but it is very impressive and very fun with each act having a distinct style
I got so many rom hacks! Sonic 3 Complete, Sonic 3D Blast DX, S Factor, Metal Sonic Hyperdrive, Metal Sonic Rebooted, Knuckles Emerald Hunt, Sonic Erazor, Sally Acorn in Sonic 1,2,3 & Knuckles, Bunnie Rabbot in Sonic 1 and 2, Sonic 2 Delta, Knuckles Chaotix with Sonic
Given how well Mania was received the fact that we haven't had another 2D Sonic is bigger mystery than the meaning of life. If Sega allowed these mods on console they'd make more money which they seem to be averse to these days.
@@Naltddesha Its prob due to Sega sitting on their asses as usual probably arguing over some crap (Sega of J & Sega of America disagreed on a ton of things in the past)
Man a few of these I wasn't even aware of so thanks for bringing them to my attention. Here's hoping you make a series out of this highlighting the best hacks for as many Sega games as possible!
Great video! I noticed you were showing a …not very good Amy in Sonic 1 hack at the beginning (the one with major palette issues), so I thought it worthwhile to mention there’s a much better set of Amy in Sonic 1/2/3 hacks that (don’t break the palette and) actually import her moveset from Sonic Advance. It’s a really fun challenge in my opinion, as in Sonic Advance, Amy couldn’t curl up into a ball and instead had to attack with her hammer, but also had a few extra acrobatic jumps at her disposal. I genuinely think it’s a shame that in Sonic Advance 2/3 they gave her the ability to spin, because I really enjoyed playing as Amy in the first game over any of the other characters, I loved the extra challenge, one that mapped quite nicely to the original Sonic games in these hacks.
Megamix, in many ways, feels like the natural evolution for Sonic on the Saturn had they chosen to make an original 2D adventure for the system. Seeing the homing attack and light speed dash incorporated into the fray are small but significant changes to the flow and level design. If it was also paired with the boost mechanic a la Sonic Rush, I think we’d be golden for a proper Sonic game for the system. Anyway, this was nicely done, Lord X.
SAGE and SHC is probably by favorite yearly event due to it nurturing the hacking scene and just generally resulting in a lot of fun content made by talented people. If you wanna find programming talent for the Genesis/Mega Drive, that's probably the best place to look.
Great video, always love seeing the hacks people come up with. The Puyo Puyo Wars hack for Streets of Rage 2 is one of my favorites. Adds many new characters and is quite fun to see how they redo some bosses/enemies. Hope to see you cover that and others in the Streets of Rage video! :)
One vote for the streets of rage rom hacks video here. I've been playing Sonic rom hacks for about as long as I've been playing the originals, but I never payed attention that much towards the ones for the streets of rage games.
Wow, this was a great ride, thanks for sharing this! I had no idea there were so many competent Sonic hacks around on the Genesis, wow! Keep up the great work and thanks for the hours of entertainment so far! Cheers!
I'd love to see more hacks on display. There's so many. Sonic 1, 2, 3 hacks, Streets of Rage as well as all the other games people have tinkered with. If anything, doing dives into hacks for each game, or the ones overshadowed by Sonic and SoR would be awesome to see too! Thank you for the video! It's a real treat
I'm really glad that this channel exists. Myself, I was a staunch Nintendo kid in the 90s, but I feel sad that Sega doesn't get as much quality YT content as Nintendo does nowadays. I really think Sega games and consoles deserve more recognition and coverage, so... Keep up the good work!
A hack really deserves respect is "Sonic Delta 40MB". It's a hack that puts all the Sonic 1, 2, 3, & Knuckles levels all in one ROM, plus some additional content like cut graphics and extra Sonic 2 levels. The creator has been working on it since 2001, right before I was born. It's still getting updates to this day. It's one of my all time favorites.
Deffo interested in a streets of rage hack compilation video, the sonic hacking community is hard to ignore , but other megadrive/genesis hacks go completely under my radar.

Oh, that's what it is. I was thinking it was an instrumental version of "Blue Monday" (a.k.a. "How Does It Feel?") by New Order, which I now suspect might have been an influence on Blade's theme.
This was a great video and a treat to watch. Thank you! Would you consider making a video of your Personally Recommended Sonic Fan Games? A lot of fan games have come and gone over the years. Although some of them were really great, many of them are now impossible to find.

A good video for showing off sonic hacks to suggest. Sonic Classic Heroes I'd suggest the rubber band choatix mode to keep all the players on the same screen. The Sonic hacking community is amazing! Heck, the entire game hacking community is incredible! Many hacks are great ways to revisit classic games you've played to death! These are some of the best Sonic hacks. Although, I couldn't get into Erazor due to the sheer difficulty. There are many other simple character swap ones that are great. Sonic 3 Complete is my favorite way to revisit Sonic 3. Sonic 3 A.I.R. is great, too, but I think you can only get that through Steam. There are other great Sonic hacks to check out: *Sonic S Factor*, *Mobius Evolution*, *Sonic 2 Delta*, and the *Amy the Hedgehog trilogy*
Sonic 3 Complete and Sonic Classic Heroes are my two favorite Sonic ROM hacks. Sega should hire the developers of these hacks and make them legit games available on Steam. I'd buy them.
One game I had moderate enjoyment playing was Somari, which is an 8-bit hack of Sonic the Hedgehog with Mario as the main character. Mario with Sonic physics feels weird to say the least.
i really like the ring tethering movement syste in chaotix. its probably my favorite movement in system in any platformer. it makes the chaotix game a really high execution sonic game. however it isn't just a high execution ceiling, its also a barrier of entry. sympathizing with with the people who make not like it, i understand and respect the traditional sonic movement system in its low barrier of entry for execution, but has great benefits when mastered, making it easy to get into and hard to master. still, out of all the things i dislike about chaotix, the movement system is by far not one of them. hopefully someday there is some kind of indie platformer game that makes use of a tethering type of system that can be used dynamically to game massive speed. i would absolutely love that.
I've never been into Genesis hacks (or hacks in general) outside translation and/or uncensoring patches. So all of these I never knew existed...though the only one that really interested me was Sonic & Knuckles with Sonic the Hedgehog Complete. But, yeah, Streets of Rage hacks would be a fun watch. I think it was this channel that clued me in on OpenBoR?
Personally, I was able to play two Sonic hacks, both of which an actual Mega Drive: Shadow the Hedgehog in Sonic 1 and The S Factor: Sonia and Silver (even though the latter is more of a fan game rather than a ROM hack).
Just wow... Will try almost all... Especialy 3dblast!... I love gex, but not first one gex((( oh my, already imagine to see gex 3dblast xD... i think that concept much closer to gex than for sonic... Good video as first part >:D
