This is an actual diy video and a great tutorial. I like that you didn’t try and hide your mistakes. I actually want to give it a shot and try it myself after watching this.
Do you mix a separate batch of mud for the top and bottom tape applications? How long should we wait between applying the top tape / bottom and vertical edge tape?
Thank you so much for this video. I got all psyched up to do this but had second thoughts and decided to see what youtube had to offer. This was the best video I watched about this process. Craftsman video didn't have anything on you. They didn't even finish the most important part of the whole process... mudding it, and God forbid they show mistakes, which we all make. Your honesty in your mistakes makes this video perfect for the do it yourselfer. Thanks again. I feel confident now that I can do this!
Orville Love good question, the paper tape prevents the seam from cracking over time. If you don't use paper or mesh tape the joint compound will crack and you'll be doing it over again. Do it once and be done :D
Geli D The hole he is repairing *is* considered large by all people who do this. Medium would be fist sized. *You* my friend, need a wall replaced. What you have isn't called a hole.
probably would have been easier to remove the dry wall first before installing the bracing, but i did learn something, i keep trying to make the first round of joint compound application perfect. Takes a few rounds before that happens. Thanks
Thanks Youbones, I was trying to keep the new hole as small as possible by installing the bracing first but either way would be good. I know what you mean by trying to make the first round perfect. That way you won't have much sanding if any.
First let me say over all very good video and thanks for providing the knowledge you have for free to help others. You narrate the video very nicely. However I did see some things that where just not needed that took up a lot of extra time. I was confused though if you made the whole because you needed to add blocking due to installing a pedestal sink? I have never seen one that would require blocking. But if for some reason that was the case then my next comments are not appropriate. If you did not need the blocking to install something then the comment is appropriate. So don’t think I’m being ugly at all. You did not need any blocking you wasted a lot of time. You just take and make a straight cut on the center of stud left and right of the opening then put your new filler piece up and mark the top and bottom and cut out. Screw into the studs just like when it was originally installed. If it was a whole with no studs close then you could use two small blocks even a paint stir stick would work place in the wall and screw just above the opening on both sides top and bottom to hold the wood then put in your filler piece and screw that to the sticks and mud.
Im glad you used paper-tape rather than the mesh, though you overlapped it, which will be harder to hide. Meaning you needed to do too many coats. You got the job done though.
Thank you so very, very much! a friend fell and put a hole in my wall and I would like to repair it instead of having the landlord worry about an holes. This has cut down my repair bill from 500+ for a professional to about 50 bucks. but - I don't know about respiration system. Do I need a big one like what is in the video, or can I just get a single use?
Jessica Opal you're stupid, for a home diy'er or a pro or not, he shouldn't make a stupid video where it's a waste of time, he wasted so much time and product and money by doing it in such an inefficient way, and shouldn't be telling people how to do it, his mud spreading is horrendous to begin with
than you for the tip. - will this also work for massive hole in concret wall ?? We had a save in the wall, and well now there jus a big as# hole in the wall... will this work for that too just with the cement stuff?
Hmmm.... is there a difference between sheet rock and drywall? My apartment... the walls are hard. Harder then drywall. I tried putting some pictures up by tacks. Anyways, the walls are really hard. It's a old building too.
Sheet rock/drywall are the same thing. If your building is really old and the wall is hard like cement then it's possible your walls are plaster. You have to use special screws/hangers for plaster - do not nail right into them!
Great video....but thats a lot of work and time to wait ...and then you have to paint over it...such a long process for just simple hole. Makes you think that there definitely has to be a better building material in general. Drywall just seems like a pain. And I would say for me anyway - this is one of those things I would outsource...even though I like to DIY. Is it just me that feels this way?
I would have gone to the floor with new Sheetrock so that lose shutoff valve could be fixed. A little sloppy tape job but that's why they make joint compound. )))
Good point Harry, if I could back in time I'd do that and just tear out the entire wall. But at the time I wanted to show how to fix the wall, lesson learned.
+Jeff Patterson I used long 2x4s and screwed them in behind the existing drywall then followed the rest of the steps in your video along with your corrections. lol

Thanks. Helpful. I'll be installing patch drywall around bathroom pipes. Suggestion for your video...turn down the background music or use none at all. More important to hear you clearly. Thanks.
+lance kucher admittedly I should have just torn out the entire wall...but I posted the video to share basic tips. Maybe you should post a video to share your tips 👍
+Home Repair Tutor It helps a lot specially for me coz im a housewife and i really want to learn how to repair house. with my self and not needing any help frm othrs
This is like watching the lunch lady teach calculus. Just because you have a basic idea of how to do it, doesn't mean you should be teaching others how to do it.
@@renovationsandmore7142 Where's your video on it then? Or do you recommend one? If you can't be respectful to the original poster, I imagine its because you are a true expert in this subject and you share it with others out of the generosity of your heart?

This was the best of all of the drywall repair videos I watched. Keep up the good work!
Thanks! I've never done this before but the video helps a lot, now it's time to repair this big hole in my wall.. wish me luck.

well I make a lot of mistakes!! But no sense in giving up the first time we mess up :)
This helped out a lot. Thank you!
thank you for the video. Taught me how to fix a 3 foot by 2 foot hole in my garage ceiling for a 1/3 of the price, plus I get to keep the tools.
***** glad it helped, great job doing it yourself :D
Why did you put tape over the shut off valve
Thanks for the video! I’ll be repairing a 6”x 24” hole today. Compliments of my Rottweiler.
Is the paper tape really necessary? Why can't I just do multiple coats of joint compound to smooth it out? just asking.

Yes it
Hey,I liked the video so much because of the music in the background.I found myself doing the jig while repairing my wall!!!

You appear to be wearing the wrong type of respirator filters. Black band = organic vapours
Thanks Jeff! I appreciate how you narrate your videos, always answering my questions as soon as they pop into my head. Looking forward to more videos.

Single use respirators should work

wow he made this job 20x harder than it needed to be.
So you have a video then to show us how to make it easier?
Maybe because he didn't make it for seasoned pros, which would be nonsense.

excellent info how to fix big holes, Thanks for the ideas. Hi from Canada
Wayne Gretzky, Maple Syrup, HOCKEY, I'm sorry!!
at 6:58 coincidentally there was pretty cool painting
I watched it again at 6:58, do you mean the layers of tape and drywall? Guess it could be considered some type of art, lol
Lol I meant above the layers, there was some kind of painting that looked like a forest
Or I just have a wild imagination
@@brandonsaxonn I saw exactly what you described!

Almost definitely lath and plaster. There are a lot of good adhesive options to hang pictures these days, try that route.
is the procedure the same if I was playing "Mike Tysons Punchout 2"?
You need a bigger trowel🤣

Sincerely, thank you very much, really good tutorial IMO.

+Maria Lucia Gomez-Greenberg awesome, you'll be good to go 👍
I have a large hole in my garage wall that has exposed pipes which makes it impossible to patch with drywall I need help
What happens if you put the tape on and then the joint compound?
You need compound behind the tape. to help embed the tape, don't overlap tape on tape though!
Thanks for this video. Now off to fix my Sis-in-Law's ceiling.
