I don't purposely look for Chinese Opera but when I see one it's hard to stop watching it. Talented actors and talented costume makers.
Seeing all these comments about "coming here because of Yun Jin", I find it interesting how pop culture can spark interest in the traditional arts and cultures in general.
Great video, it was a delight to have subtitles I could understand!
One of the main goals I have with learning Chinese is to be able to appreciate literature and art in its true, original form. Chinese art forms are really filled with so much depth, so many layers of meaning and subtext. Of course, it takes a lot of experience to also be able to understand the connotations and references. I'm reading modern novels which is still a loooooong way off being able to appreciate classics like Hong Lou Meng, but I aim to continue learning and gradually understand more and more. Chinese operas have so much subtext; each sentence is brief and sung slowly - but says so much. Understanding a lot of it requires much more cultural and literary experience than I have, though. But I think that's one of my favourite things about the Chinese language - it's so rich and capable of conveying so much different information on so many levels in such a short space, perfect for the many art forms that make use of it. It's truly a beautiful language (or group of languages).

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE POST MORE OPERA PERFORMANCES WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES!! CCTV NEVER subtitles ANY of the operas they post every week and that is SO ANNOYING. They all look so good... I dont know the name but the singer who plays the mother stole the whole show for me. She was amazing both with her voice and her expressive face.

@@elitedangeroustheworldnext9086Because traditionally women were not allowed to perform on stage. Men would sing the women’s roles and the would pitch up their voices. Now women can perform opera but they still use the same technique men did to continue the tradition.
sometimes it's really difficult to find good video quality of Chinese opera, some of the plays are recorded with poor audio and shaky hands and are basically unwatchable, I love how this performance got professionally filmed, it feels like watching a feature movie!!
