In India, button mushrooms are grown seasonally and in environment-controlled cropping houses. White button mushroom requires 20-280 C for vegetative growth (spawn run) and 12-180 C for reproductive growth. Besides that, it requires relative humidity of 80-90% and enough ventilation during cropping. Seasonally, it is grown during the winter months in the north-west plains of India and for 8-10 months in a year on the hills. However, with the advent of modern cultivation technology it is now possible to cultivate this mushroom anywhere in India.
Mushrooms are grown in environment-controlled cropping houses. It requires 20-28-degree C for vegetative growth and 12-18-degree C for reproductive growth i.e., for formation of fruit body. Relative humidity of 80-90% and ventilation during cropping is also needed.
Cultivation process:
• It can be divided in following steps-
• Mushroom spawn production
• Preparation of compost
• Spawning
• Casing soil
• Cropping and Harvesting
Selection of Site and Pre-requisites:
• Should be away from municipal limits
• Should motorable
• Plentiful availability of water
• Easy availability of raw materials
• Availability of cheap labour
• Uninterrupted proper power supply
• Near to the market
 Button mushroom consists of 4 unit viz.
• Spawn unit
• Composting unit
• Cropping unit
• Post-harvest handling unit
 Farm Design:
There are 2 types of Button Mushroom farm viz. Low Cost (for seasonal growing) & High Cost (for year-round cultivation). Both of two designed (Low cost & High cost) farm consists of following design layout. Here we are discussing about low-cost farm design.
