Bro my most recent barber pushed my right side back for some reason and almost cut into my loc, had to tell him to do it on the other side to make it even, had some widescreen forehead for a bit and had to let it grow back like a centimetre to fix it
Bruh im telling you!!! They good for messing you up bruh! And honestly there’s no real way to control or avoid it when you let someone else cut it! I had to learn the hard way lol
Excessive itching/ tapping will damage your scalp and thin the roots of your locs so invest in some tea tree, peppermint oil and aloe vera. Cut your nails short if you have to
I’m ever so grateful for my loctician. I initially came in wanting an interlock method and she militantly was like “no… we’re gonna do comb twists for at least 8 months first.” After 10 months of comb twisting, she did my first interlock and a year and change later, my locs have never been stronger and looked their best. Shout out to Jay 🖤
Been on my lock journey now for just about a year. I had a retwist back in July 2021, and it was not good for my locs. However I finally found a loctician just the other month and she rejuvenated my hair both with a detox and with crochet hooking. And after I got my hair all better, my barber cleaned me up real good, while still keeping my locs in mind and making sure not to cut up to close. Invest in good people just like you hair
This video comes literally 2 days after my first time dying my locs. And you guessed it. I went with blond. I am definitely worried about damage. I make sure I moisturize my hair daily now. I don't plan on getting anymore color no time soon. Thanks for the video. 1 year 6 months loc'd. 🤞🏾💪🏾
I’m sure your locs will be fine! One time isn’t gonna ruin ya locs! ✊🏾 And you’re Halfway through year 2!!! 🔥🔥🔥 that’s so dope! Great job staying committed queen!
I started my journey 5 months ago using the crochet method, absolutely luv the change but so nervous I’m gonna do something wrong… thanks for your videos very informative 😘
I switched to interlocking last year as it was easier to hold the hair in place, didn’t sweat out too quick, and also to give a different budding opportunity (my locs have thickened since then and I have no build-up). HOWEVER, if you can’t do it properly, go to a professional. And be careful with a crotchet hook as you can accidentally poke holes in your locs if you don’t do it right (I did once before). Reasonable space and time between maintenances is best!
When it comes to barbering, I ain't gotta worry about the lineup, I PROHIBIT that from EVER happening to me, specifically my front hairline. I personally believe it just takes away from the look of the dreads
I had dreads last year and I restarted them with two strand twist and luckily now I’ve learned from my mistakes and also thank you for the vids to help me also!!
Chasing my 2nd year now. No dye, only retwists. I do wanna colour it though but I'm afraid of my locs going brittle, so for now I'm happy with the 4 strand twists. Come summer... SWAAANNNNGGGIN'
As a licensed cosmetologist you are absolutely right. I ask plenty of questions when doing locs so my clients know what to expect in the future. Also when cutting they hair.
Bro yesss for the barber part. I had a barber one time cut way too high up and got half of the root of my loc. I didnt notice until I got home, fortunately the loc stayed in, and I grew back the hair around it. But ever since I noticed little things barbers will do to get the look, I started cutting my own hair. Which I feel like most locheads should do. No one knows your hair better than you
They don’t! And honestly this be the main reason why lockers with the hairline in the front all seem to have em pushed back over time! Gradual cuts over time!
Thanks for another great vid. Getting my locs started tomorrow afternoon, finally, super pumped. This will be the third time I’ve loc’d my hair, all great advice in this vid. Cut them off twice before due to not loving them once and getting a Portuguese Man-o-war (jellyfish) caught in them the second time. Love the vids, keep them up.
I’ll be a year loc’d in at the end of the month as much as I love a fresh retwist , that interlock just makes my dreads look and feel healthier. I’ll be getting another interlock to end this year. Figured I get one once a year so I don’t put much tension on my roots.
Two tips I would say is don’t use a bunch a products on your locs (pretty sure they advice came from you) and don’t go to bed without covering your locs
+1 on Barbers compromising your locs over time. I’ve heard a few breaks while my barber is back there fading, I just know some unintended ripping is happening. Having a barber you know personally and has been with you during your loc journey can help mitigate this, but I think you cutting your own hair is best.
The point about getting excessive shape ups is too true! I haven’t been to a barber since I got my semi freeform dreads. I got a cut for a wedding I was invited to, and he almost cut one of my knots off when he was edging me up!!! 😤
Felt that barber point hard. I got at least 4 of my roots cut into at my last trip and now I'm dreading my next retwist. The second you get comfortable that could be the one time they mess up.
Hey TPLOCKS great seeing you again. I’m still learning (3 months in) my Loctition is also my barber. At the mo I RETWIST every 6 months, but gonna see if I can leave it a bit longer. I was growing out, blonde hair colour when I started so at the mo, I got 3 colours going on, my black, with blonde & starting to grey😂🤣. Hope you, your family. & Subscribers are all well. ONE LOVE🙏🏽
I work with this lady and she told me she’s been loc’d for 5 years. She goes to a lady that attempted to start locs for me but she was horrible and after that experience I took them down the next day (they were already coming undone and unraveling) and didn’t start my Loc journey until 2 years later because I was traumatized but I digress. But she told me she gets retwists EVERY 2 WEEKS! I was shocked! I’m like she is gonna thin your hair out! She was like she felt they already were starting! Smh that person didn’t start her locs but if she continues to go to her, she def gon finish em! I get a retwist once every 3 months and I get a style when I go and wear it for like a month or so then I take my hair down and wear it out. Gotta be careful with retwist frequency and maintaining a loctician. Can’t have too many playing in your hair. On the barber thing, them jokers will try to make a line for you especially when you have a full set of locs and every thing is basically in your retwisted loc. like they try to comb a lil bit to make a line and then line you up. They will slowly but surely start to push your locs back or thin out your locs and then you gon have to two piece em! From now on, when I go to the barber I just need my beard & sideburns lined up not my hair because they be doing too much
Hey! Thank you for the pointers, I started my loc journey about 4 weeks ago with the help of a professional. I am super excited. It has taken me 3 years to decide; it is a decision I didn't take lightly. So, I am going to subscribe. Thanks so much for sharing your experiences.
Everything here facts, but you see that barber section? SUPER FACTS! Buying my electric shaver soon so my wife can help me with my fade more often, especially because she likes to help with my hair care. A lot of my barbers just don't listen.
Ladies avoid quick weaves. I went in October 2021 to the shop and yes she is licensed to get something different. I have had my dread since November 2020. well i didn’t know she didn’t cover up all my hair with the cap she applied the glue. She ended up gluing my entire front directly onto the weave. When I washed it out in December I ended up with extremely thin dreads along my hairline glue matted in my dreads and missing spots. I wanted to cut them all of but my husband insured me to just leave it alone and allow the new hair to grow In so 3 months later my spot has filled in but my dreads are still thin. Please be careful love and your hair
Thanks so much for sharing a story and giving us a different perspective! I definitely couldn’t speak to this. Woowww! Glad the spot filled at least! Thanks for sharing queen!
Yes I made the same mistake by over twisting and styling my locks it caused me some breakage and weaker locks by knowing what I know now I only get retwisted 3 to 4 times a year and the crochet method lasts longer but it so darn expensive
I started my locs 3 months ago with interlocking, and then I switched to retwisting cause the interlocks just slip out with every wash. Retwisting actually keeps my hair in twists better surprisingly
I had dyed my locs I had asked for brown and she lightly bleached it blond. I was so shocked I didn't know what to say. I didn't think I was asking for her to bleach my hair. Also, I cut my own hair not because of cutting into my locs, but because these barbers on crack now a days. They want 50 dollars for an undercut (not a fade) and edge up for hairline and beard.
Very educational video on traditional locs. I’m starting my freeform journey and a lot of the reasons you named of how you can weaken your locs is the reason why I started freeforms. It’s less maintenance and I think it creates thicker locs. Thanks for the content definitely will be subscribing
Barbers will mess u up foreal. U git any tips for loc breakage in the middle. Like the roots r strong but some locs r like half the length of other locs.
Wash day…. Dawg… when I first started I put a Durag on when I went to sleep with my hair wet and it flattened and it hasn’t gotten better and it been years
My hairs interlocked. I planned on starting them this way and then getting them twisted for retwists. Ended up letting them just get interlocked every time and the loctition is the problem! She only goes in one way and that ruined my hairs lock pattern because i had my girl maintain them by interlocking them correctly (going in at 4 angles). The crochet needle has been my best friend as I used it to even out the locs. A whole lot of elbow grease and not going to my loctition anymore and now my locs are thriving.
Maaaaan I found this vid late! I cut them off because if bleaching and thinning smh! Growing my hair back woth the contemplation of starting over but we shall see!
As a barber, I feel attacked. I would never push your locs back. Having locs and being a barber I would never touch a loc. I even tell my long hair clients to style before cuts. (Completely kidding about feeling attacked)
We don’t take too kindly to YOUR KIND around these parts 😂😂😂 Nah a barber with locs is probably ideal! That’s like the blade of barbers! All the strengths of a locker but none of the weaknesses of a regular barber! 😅
@@TPlocks oh yea man, just when they get longer you can tell the difference on where you started your braids an you gotta cut off the ends where the braids started
I’m at a year and a half loc’d now but I’m still too scared to commit to adding some color 😅 do you think doing the tips/half the loc a light brown or a darker blonde would mess mine up? Also bro no cap the high top looks clean af. I got a full set but been thinking about high top since day 1. Probably gonna transition after I hit the 2 year mark
It wouldn’t mess em up! You might feel a slight difference in the non dyed hair tho! That bleach is a beast! And yea bro hightops are really the way for me!! I’d have waaaaay to much hair if I had a full set! 😅 Definitely think it through though. Once you decide, ain’t no going back! 👀 lol
Yeah the going to sleep on wet hair 😫 learning the hard way.. long story short.. i got some flat locs. Still beautiful.. however im trying to reshape some of them.. im thankful i can still shape them so their not flat, flat but mmmaaaannnnnn
So I got a little temp fade and I realized one on the back of my head was a little thin and I can’t really tell if it was always like that or not. I might start asking my barber to just not cut the back anymore just in case. My hair’s too short to pull up anyway so people won’t see it.
If he does cut it tell them to leave extra space between the locs! It’s not the easiest to fully communicate but if you gotta go to the barber it’s worth a shot!
Quick question about the retiwsting. What’s your recommendation on how often in the beginning? I do mines every 4 weeks. Mainly because I have Seborrheic Dermatitis, so it keeps that from flaring up so much.
In the first 6 months i just did it every 2-3 months but towards that 3rd month i really needed a retwist. However after that, u can go longer without a retwist
First time I went almost 3 months without retwist.. this time it's been almost 6 months since last retwist and notice my hair thickening and budding more🤷 scheduling appointment now.. excited to see the outcome 💯
soon as he said go to a professional to interlock an that if you have a interlocking story i ran to the comments🤣interlocking your hair honestly will make nice looking dreads in my opinion but they can not be combed out and you lose a LOT of length . your hair becomes very dense so its heavier, which could cause thinning. i had to combine a loc that lost about 2 inches from interlocking with another so it didnt look like i had hald a dread missing, so i have a half dense half loose dread in my head lol. so yea, go to a professional fsho😂😂 i recommend interlocking if you just want to keep a dread from unraveling. i dont think it should be your preferred method!
I'm 3 years loc'd and I'm currently in a country where I can't find a proper hairdresser. The last one I found interlocked my hair and about 7 of my dreads thinned and fell out in the next 3 weeks. It was hell. Luckily I did manage to get back home to my hair dresser and she did the magic you know. Now I'm back to the country where all the horror lies. I'm just really asking for some practical and essential ways I can maintain my own hair when my hairdresser is unavailable cuz frankly I don't trust nobody after that experience.
Sigh. Going to bed with wet hair. Or even just laying on damp hair. Sigh. Current situation. In combo with waiting a long time for this retwist and roots marrying 💍🙄 Def shoulda hit it with the cool dryer before I laid down. Or washed earlier like you said/just done the dang retwist asap instead of waiting. Smh 🤦🏾♀️
Funny thing is a bunch of these applied to me. I have bleached my locs but only two of them in front of my face like Ja Morant. I would say they are still pretty stable but I would only dye like once every 5 or 6 months. I was getting a retwist every month until I hit a year then I moved to every 2-3 months. I was doing my own haircuts for about a year but I’ve cut into a loc once or twice and have had to combine some locs. Pretty much had to learn you don’t have to have the absolute freshest cut and now I have a pretty natural hairline. Basically I’m saying this stuff is a lot of trial and error so I recommend studying up on this stuff before you do it.
interlocking is the fucking worse.. its not for everyone. i even went to a professional but my hair is also thin and i had color damage. locs were thinning and falling out. i had barely started locking and she thought that process would be best for my soft hair.. HOT MESS !! had to cut and regrow my hair.
On my journey I learned that right before a year I waited for a good 3 months before I did a retwist. And I have to say the drop is real but the thickness I wanted came back
My barber legit hit 3 different locs yesterday…normally doesn’t happen, but he nicked a few good hairs and I was tight mad about it… It can be recovered per my loctician and we can add in the newgrowth when it comes back…but whew.
I wish I could put pictures up cause it really does happen… barbers have cut into my locks… after 11 years, there is a noticeable difference in where my Locs were even 7 years ago. I’m growing my hair back out, and I doubt I’m even gonna get a line up from now on
Hey! I know this video is over 8 months old. But I just got starter locs today and my loctician is recommending I come every 3 weeks for a wash/retwist for the first 5 months. I think that’s a bit excessive. Any pointers on how often I should go for a retwist in the first 5-6 months? I know after a year I’m only getting retwist every 2-3 months

Yeah if you’ve got a reliable interlocking routine definitely not discouraging that! 😁 I love locs too!

Instead of holding my hair up with clips my barber tried to use a brush to push it back, I screamed out of fear
Barbers will mess u up foreal. U git any tips for loc breakage in the middle. Like the roots r strong but some locs r like half the length of other locs.
Love your videos bro ! Year in on my loc journey and your tip and vids stay helping me !
Glad I can help family! Congratulations on your year!
I agree with everything bro said 💯%
Wash day…. Dawg… when I first started I put a Durag on when I went to sleep with my hair wet and it flattened and it hasn’t gotten better and it been years
Damnnn yea that’s definitely something that can happen. I had some in the back that got slightly better over time. They still flat, just not as flat 😅
Hi I got an great idea for an topic that you should discuss. How about doing the worlds longest locs. I believe it’s still asha Mandela.
Lowkey think I did that 😅 ruclips.net/video/X_6xWKnVfwE/видео.html
Yoooo, when are you gonna do a next live rating viewers locs broskiii?😅 much love🙏🏾
I aim to do one every weekend but then life hits! Imma see if I can do it this weekend!
@@TPlocks bettttt, I’m looking forward to it
Man I thought I was doing good then I got to tip #5..guess who’s now sitting in front of the fan 😣lol
Hahaha....😄
Amazing advice!!
I need that dread hoodie
Link in bio famm!!! 🔥🔥🔥
I’ve been on my loc journey for almost 1 year. I wash, retwist, and style monthly. From all the comments, this may be to much.
Question do anybody get a hair cut before a retwist or after a retwist, cause I b worried my hairline gonna b bck 😂😂😂
I always try to twist before a cut. Sometimes I can’t wait tho lol
Mans like ‘pause’😂
As a barber, I feel attacked. I would never push your locs back. Having locs and being a barber I would never touch a loc. I even tell my long hair clients to style before cuts. (Completely kidding about feeling attacked)
We don’t take too kindly to YOUR KIND around these parts 😂😂😂 Nah a barber with locs is probably ideal! That’s like the blade of barbers! All the strengths of a locker but none of the weaknesses of a regular barber! 😅
This my second phase of locs, I always start with box braids.
I bet that method has some great hold!
@@TPlocks oh yea man, just when they get longer you can tell the difference on where you started your braids an you gotta cut off the ends where the braids started
I have a great barber, she always leave my hairline natural but I do wanna learn how to do it myself
You’re one of the lucky few
@@TPlocks I rarely get a cut and I always make sure my hair is did before a cut as well
I’m at a year and a half loc’d now but I’m still too scared to commit to adding some color 😅 do you think doing the tips/half the loc a light brown or a darker blonde would mess mine up?
We all learned the hard way with these journeys! I got them flat ones too! Lol
Big facts ahch
Bro said 101th 😂😂😂 it’s 101st! Appreciate the video tho
Bro get it like 2-3 months
If u get it every month ur dreads will start getting thin
In the first 6 months i just did it every 2-3 months but towards that 3rd month i really needed a retwist. However after that, u can go longer without a retwist
@@JJ-tz9to Fr my bro
First time I went almost 3 months without retwist.. this time it's been almost 6 months since last retwist and notice my hair thickening and budding more🤷 scheduling appointment now.. excited to see the outcome 💯
I damn near threaten my barber every time he lines me up! I only get a line up for an occasion, not necessarily every time I get a retwist
You got to! If you don’t threaten em they will think it’s sweet! 😂😂
soon as he said go to a professional to interlock an that if you have a interlocking story i ran to the comments🤣interlocking your hair honestly will make nice looking dreads in my opinion but they can not be combed out and you lose a LOT of length . your hair becomes very dense so its heavier, which could cause thinning. i had to combine a loc that lost about 2 inches from interlocking with another so it didnt look like i had hald a dread missing, so i have a half dense half loose dread in my head lol. so yea, go to a professional fsho😂😂
i recommend interlocking if you just want to keep a dread from unraveling. i dont think it should be your preferred method!
Definitely lost some looks because they kept clipping over time. I don’t go as much anymore. I give myself the chop.
It’s a tough lesson to learn bro! Sorry for those lost locs!
In combo with waiting a long time for this retwist and roots marrying 💍🙄
Def shoulda hit it with the cool dryer before I laid down. Or washed earlier like you said/just done the dang retwist asap instead of waiting. Smh 🤦🏾♀️
I’ve done the same thing before!!! 😅 it’s hard to wash at night lol
Thanks for the wet tip I didn’t know that , I did that the other day and was wondering why my hair smell like that
I had to cut mine recently cause of over twisting…but i have learned and in progress of starting over!!
And I have to say the drop is real but the thickness I wanted came back
My barber legit hit 3 different locs yesterday…normally doesn’t happen, but he nicked a few good hairs and I was tight mad about it…
It can be recovered per my loctician and we can add in the newgrowth when it comes back…but whew.
At some point. I just stopped going to the barber. Thank God when my new growth come in; it’ll look like i got a natural edge anyway
I live in the Caribbean. I perspire freely from my head and my locs are 19 months old. Is it okay to wash them frequently?
Absolutely!
I got a feeling TP done left some clothes in the washing machine too long more than a few times. Bro was TOO descriptive of the smell lmaooo
