I’ve gone to Buffalo 4 times, the first time being during COVID in September 2020. The other times because my brother now goes to school in Rochester, which is coincidentally an hour away. But the city makes me feel lonely as someone who has spent his entire life in New York City. Gave off the vibes of a rundown midwestern city. And now I understand where that feeling comes from.
I grew up in nearby Niagara Falls, which also got beat up in the 1970’s and later. But you’re right, western NY is midwestern, different from metro NYC where I live now. Niagara Falls, NY fell from 100,000 to 30,000.
I'm from NYC but lived in Buffalo and visited many times since. Total midwestern feel. Buffalo feels much more like a Michigan than an eastern NY. Niagara Falls is a total ghost town but I can't help but feel allured to its past and its potential.

Steele, autos, chemicals, etc. It was macroeconomic factors that lead to the rust belt. This happened suddenly starting in 1970. At least half of all manufacturing jobs were lost. The city lost 200,000 of its population.

The building of a major piece of transport infrastructure killed the geographical advantage that was the reason for Buffalo to exist. The Great Lakes are an incredible economic asset. The cargo ships that would sail them in Buffalos' heyday were as large as those that plyed the world's oceans at the time. But those ships couldn't go any farther east than Buffalo. Until the building of the Saint Lawrence Seaway and the expansion of the Welland Canal enabled a ship leaving the port of Chicago to bypass Buffalo and sai directly to any other port in the world.
My great-grandma moved to Buffalo to escape the Nazis, great city. But then I guess when the news came in 1957 she should have realized it spells death for the city, and packed up and moved again, right?
I moved from WNY to Florida 7 years ago. Though the political climate in FL is better and less taxes that’s where the positives end. Florida is full of rude east coast snobs. Every penny you think you’ll save in taxes you’ll spend on home and auto insurance and being scammed by everyone you hire to work on your house ect. The heat and humidity becomes as bad as the snow and cold to deal with. I truly miss the more laid back life and down to earn people in WNY. The food, restaurants and grocery stores also suck in FL.

I live in the suburbs of Buffalo and it's not all bad. I'd say rochester and Syracuse are in worse positions. We've had jobs moving here, and there's a lot of building going on in the southtowns where I live. Cannabis campus, a mr clean factory, a state of the art soundstage. Just to name a few. We gained in the 2020 census. The city is slowly being turned around. The east side is still a mess, and crime could be better. But we're on the verge of turning around. We're still better than cleveland or Detroit.
Buffalo isn't a big city anymore but it's a very compact, pleasant small city that has 3 wonderful seasons (outside of its notorious winters) and a lot of charm, history and nice people. It's about as different from New York City as a city possibly can be and that's mostly a good thing. It has a smaller but stable population and economy and has some high-quality universities in Canisius University and University at Buffalo (SUNY) among others. It has a much lower cost of living but it's 3-4 hours from Cleveland and Pittsburgh and is still within a day's drive of major East Coast cities like New York, Boston, Philly, even DC (though it's about 7-8 hours away for each of them) and a similar drive's time to Detroit and Chicago. It's also only 2 hours away from Toronto (depending on the border crossing). No, it's not the most happening place but it's slowly recovering and redeveloping, and you can do a lot worse. If you REALLY want to see depressing places in the U.S., go to the remote parts of the Mountain West, Great Plains, Deep South or Appalachia. Even within the former industrial Midwest, places like southeastern Ohio, northern Indiana, and southern Illinois are in FAR worse shape.

They need a few Fortune 500 companies to relocate there bringing in high paying jobs. The only companies based there are M&T Bank, Rich Products (which no one knows about outside of Buffalo), and Delaware North.
I used to go up there twice a week to deliver loads to the GM plant in Tonawanda. I didn't have to venture very far off the interstate but from what I could see it had seen better days at least in that area. Another city that became victim to corporate greed that shipped most of it's jobs to China.

It’s doing better now, but the damage has been done. The good thing is Buffalo is home to some of the nicest people on the planet, and by far the best sports fans in the country. And that’s not even debatable.
The modern day problem with us here in Buffalo is our politicians. We have had greedy mayors and politicians with little vision and integrity. We have those on one hand that want to make Buffalo a tourist town and on the other hand those like me that want a Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area of North Carolina type development. Tourism can only take us so far but there is no way we can sustain a vital city with that myopic vision. We need a true visionary, perhaps Terry Pegula , that can do certain things right away like tear down the Skyway, tear down those God awful grain elevators and revitalize and clean up the Bethlehem Steel properties. And that's for starters. How about the government step in and FORCE the Buffalo Terminal owners to shit or get off the pot and do something with that property. Perhaps do a Toronto type of municipal government and merge the Tonawanda's, Amherst, Clarence all into one single economic driver. Lastly take a page out of the Triangle area down in NC and get the public/private/education institutions on the same page for development. Buffalo has a lot to offer with the right vision.

I dropped by to stay for a night, visit the falls and try some wings and a beef on Weck from Duffs recently. Probably only spent a couple of huindred bucks but I hope it helped. Nobody deserves Wide Right.

Bflo. in the 1950s 550,000 people... today 225,000 maybe. Blue collar jobs died in the 70's.. in the 60's you could quit a job and have another job in a couple days. Buffalo in the 40's/50/ was highly segregated ( by choice ), and there was nothing wrong with that..IMHO.. when people began to leave the city for the suburbs, then the city took on a different look, and it wasn't pretty.. Crime today is the problem, although down from the previous years, it is still high.
I wouldn't worry about either Buffalo pro sports team leaving. Bills are getting a new stadium (too expensive but still), and the Sabres have no good alternatives. Buffalo is ideal for football and hockey.

I lived there for 6 years, it's definitely the type of city that only holds sentimental value. I loved the city, but it's heavily segregated, little to no development, and crime is getting worse. Look up the East side of Buffalo and you'll see what the future of Buffalo will look like.

I moved away from Buffalo in 2006. When people ask me if I would ever think about moving back, my response is always “only if Buffalo isn’t part of New York State”.
Yes, NYS has higher than average taxes compared to other states, but it is really a rounding error compared to what certain tax entities earn. People do not mind paying taxes, unless it fixes the bridges, roads, safety, and other living standards.

I can get almost anywhere I need to go driving on any day of the week in twenty minutes or less, often much less, even on a fairly snowy day. People are very generous and kind here. Two ladies cook for me in my apartment complex, without even asking! Medical care is very good. I walk to a nearby hospital, and it takes less than fifteen minutes to get a blood draw. The younger generation carries on traditions of helping people, playing boot hockey, keeping the spirit alive. I could live anywhere, but I choose here. I spent my first eighteen years here, and my last twenty-two years. I see many reasons to stay for my last years._ 🐃 - j q t -

Buffalo and the wider area of Western New York have kind of a midwestern feel. Nice people and low key - much different from say Boston or metro NYC.

I’m from Syracuse and in the next 10 years, Syracuse should to have a population growth since there is a new microchip manufacturing moving in.

Summer in Buffalo is relatively mild compared to many areas of the country. Lake Erie helps keep the temperature below 90 degrees most of the time.

I wouldn't worry about either Buffalo pro sports team leaving. Bills are getting a new stadium (too expensive but still), and the Sabres have no good alternatives. Buffalo is ideal for football and hockey.

I lived there for 6 years, it's definitely the type of city that only holds sentimental value. I loved the city, but it's heavily segregated, little to no development, and crime is getting worse. Look up the East side of Buffalo and you'll see what the future of Buffalo will look like.

Its really amazing how all these cities disentegrate as a result of moral decay. The city of Port of Spain in Trinidad in the West Indies is also slowly dying mainly due to the awful politics in Trinidad. People in Trinidad have lost their way big time. Religion and politics both gone bad.

I moved away from Buffalo in 2006. When people ask me if I would ever think about moving back, my response is always “only if Buffalo isn’t part of New York State”.
Yes, NYS has higher than average taxes compared to other states, but it is really a rounding error compared to what certain tax entities earn. People do not mind paying taxes, unless it fixes the bridges, roads, safety, and other living standards.

Yeah, Buffalo is awesome, so many different kinds of people and culture and food, I've lived in 32 different states and Buffalo NY is the only one that made me move back and settle down

I can get almost anywhere I need to go driving on any day of the week in twenty minutes or less, often much less, even on a fairly snowy day. People are very generous and kind here. Two ladies cook for me in my apartment complex, without even asking! Medical care is very good. I walk to a nearby hospital, and it takes less than fifteen minutes to get a blood draw. The younger generation carries on traditions of helping people, playing boot hockey, keeping the spirit alive. I could live anywhere, but I choose here.
