If your machine is a Brother's or a Knitking machine then it will read the 1st. row of the pattern 7 rows from the bottom of the card. The large button on the right can be pushed down and turned until the card is ready to read 7 rows up from the bottom of the card. Those 2 full punched rows of the card are covered when you pin the card together. So the 1st. row with the selector button set so the card will not roll will set your pattern, then release the selector so the card will advance each row Glad to see young folks knitting on machines. I have just acquired a Brother kh891 punchcard machine ( still in its box) and I am doing some home work before I get it setup to have a go. I have all the original manuals and am working through them. I have just got to the section on repeating motifs and it looked like there are a set of plastic cams that allow for repeats of a motif but it seemed that this limited the repeat to 72 st wide. Your answer helps a lot, I was concerned that there might a limit to the number of width wise repeats the machine could carry out . Many thanks Tom
Wonderful! Yes I think the cams will help you if you want to limit a motif, like I said, but you should also be able to not use them and make the pattern across the whole needle bed. :)
You make this look so easy!!! I recently was given my grandmother's knitting machine (a Toyota KS950--it's fairly similar to yours as far as I can tell), and I have been struggling. I finally managed to get the second color in without tying my whole project in knots after watching this, which feels like an accomplishment, but I'm having an issue with my machine not always pulling the new stitches all the way through the loops. I'm confident it's my error and not a machine malfunction because my grandma was very skilled (like, she wrote her own manuals and everything), and the machine worked perfectly for her. Do you (or anyone else) have any ideas what my issue could be?
My best guess would be that you need to weight your work more! The manuals really really understate how crucial weight is to your machine working properly, especially once you're doing more than one color! Hopefully that helps!!! :)

I assumed they were extras for the bulky machine I don't have yet. It turns out that I am whatever skill level precedes "beginner" because "beginner" instructions assume way more knowledge about knitting machines than I have!😅Some extra weight and a little less tension in color 2 has pretty much resolved my issues I think! I have a quick question about using punch card machines to create patterning across the width of a jumper. you showed how the pattern can be repeated vertically by clipping the card together. How Can the pattern be repeated across the full width of the machine ( if for example you are making jumper) . Does it simple depend on how many needles you have in play ? Or are there some other tricks that need to be taken into account. Thank you. Tom.
Hi there! The pattern will naturally repeat horizontally, across all the needles you have selected if you just start working it. Depending on your machine, you may also have pieces that you can slide or clip into place that will define the needles that the pattern runs across (if you DON'T want to go across all the needles, for instance). Do you have a manual for your machine? If not, you can find many manuals online and that can also help you. :)

i’m a hand knitter but i’m thinking of buying a knitting machine. i’d want to use it for more complex colourwork pieces that would take an age by hand but i’m struggling to find a good machine second hand. with these punchcard brother machines do you know if there’s any way to knit colourwork patterns longer than 24 stitches? i’m a complete novice when it comes to knitting machines and have no idea where to start in finding a good one for me. if you know anything that could be of help i’d be so thankful :))
Check eBay, that's where I got mine! And the punch card size is pretty standard at 24 although I think there are machines that go up to 36... I have no idea how difficult that would be to find though!

Those settings are likely different on a Singer, although you may have the same functionality. Do you have your manual? If so, I recommend looking at the section for punch card knitting. If not, I suggest looking online, many manuals are available to download for free. :)

When stitches drop you often need more weight. You might also try tensioning your yarn with your hand - sometimes the yarn pulls out too far and then stitches drop. Hopefully that helps! :)
You might also need to move the cartridge further over to the left when you reach the end of the row - if you're switching directions too quickly it may also drop stitches.
I'm not sure I totally understand your question, but if you have long floats you can place the middle of the float on a needle in the row above, behind the "real" stitch the needle is holding, and then knit the row with the float "caught" in that way. This sometimes causes distortion on the front of the work, however, and I've personally found that even quite long floats (3" - 4") cause less of a problem than you might think in a finished garment. :)
@@gretchentracy4550 The model number is on the right hand side of your knit carriage, you have a KH-891, which is probably from the early to mid 1980's, Mum had a KH-840, which was from the late 70's/early 80's and then she replaced it with the KH-910 around 1984 when the electronic machines came in.
