The mind is a wondrous thing. I find it amazing that throughout the centuries of dedicated science, we still have more yet to learn about the brain and how it works. Discoveries, Explorations, and Frontiers.
Sorry I don't have something to refer you to, but I remember someone telling me that there is a study comparing people who grew up in modern, city like environments to people who still grew up in more natural environments. Optical illusions didn't work on the two groups the same ways. I'd love to actually read that study.
It was a good explanation of a type of illusion, but it would of been more interesting if it had covered more. It would also have benefited by showing how everything we see is effectively an illusion made up by the brain (a faithful representation would be back-to-front, upside-down, grey and blurry round the edges, jumpy and with blind spots in the middle. We are also merging 2 different images for "3d"). Illusions, therefore, are the rule rather than the exception.
It's not about what he knows, it's about how damned good he is at explaining it in a way that's entertaining and makes sense. This type of science is going to be very important going into the future, and I think it's about time for The Discovery Channel (Ha!) to get a Neil DeGrasse Tyson for brains. For the chiddens... 15 years from now this should be preschool...
so that first illusion would appear parallel in the olden times before forms of fast transport were invented since their brains would not be geared to recognise them as blur lines?
I guess it's best to always plan ahead for everything, since we suffer from these awful limitations concerning stimuli. To be sincere, I use a related technique for parking my car. hahah! I look at the empty space, and do a "virtual parking" in my mind before actually moving an inch. It always results in perfect parking.
Mathematically, the human brain calculates the second derivative of the position of the an object in motion, and calculates its trajectory. The best athletes have highly developped mathematical "brain subroutines". I just wish they paid more attention in class :)
The explains how we are able to do amazing things like catch falling objects that are moving so fast we can't possible see and process them..... We predict where they are going to be.
They don't really move for me how weird. 6:55. But then when I look at words on paper they sort of move. So maybe that is a key to dyslexia. The way words are printed.
Thanks for uploading this AFTER I had finished my science fair project on illusions and when it was already judged. Wish I had seen this before. My project looks like shit. :c
"It's not in real life that you see blurred lines." (2:00). The myth of object permanence rears its head at the two minute mark. On what scientific basis does he assume there is a 'real life out there' that the human eye merely recreates albeit with the occasional hiccup? Increasingly I am convinced that the mind creates reality as opposed to the classical sense of it being REcreated in the back of the eye analogous to a camera. It seems to me Don Hoffman et al have us on the brink of a Copernican worldview shift. This is old school by comparison.
Why is this video unavailable in India? Using VPN trough Norway I can see it.. Why would RUclips block this for Indians? God I really hate what Internet has become, it used to be free flow of information, not like this.. Shame on whoever made this unavailable.
Should mean that your brain is not compensating for the 1/10 of a second delay. It should also mean you would be bad at sports and a potential danger while driving. xD
Really, if the human brain had been Created by an Intelligence it would be feeling ashamed of itself and would be putting the final touches to a much better version right about now.

years from now his research will be studied and taught to students as one of the best psychological theories
You were right man.

So seemingly simple, yet mind blown.

This also helps explain why we overreact so much to slow internet loading....
I've always wondered about illusions. This explains it a little bit.
The audio sounds so good I can hear his nostrils whistling
Get this guy a TV series.

Learning new and interesting things = my favourite hobby!
The second image is also not moving for me...
You must have tuned out. It wasn't about perspective, it was about motion blur.
Hmmm, the last one isn't moving for me for some reason.
Mathematically, the human brain calculates the second derivative of the position of the an object in motion, and calculates its trajectory. The best athletes have highly developped mathematical "brain subroutines".
I just wish they paid more attention in class :)
So it takes time for the brain to interpret the reality around us while also subconsciously creating a perception of the future
it's okay brain, i still love you
I love learning so much.
Fascinating!! Great explanation :O
Damn it. That makes too much sense!
Mind is blown. Mind saw itself blow a tenth of a second before it happened.
Awesome. Loved this
Thank you for answering one of life's mysteries
It's weird...when I stare at the starburst really hard trying to straighten it out, it turns into jagged lines instead of a bow
Sick.
Literally.
The explains how we are able to do amazing things like catch falling objects that are moving so fast we can't possible see and process them..... We predict where they are going to be.
The thing at the end didn't move at all :s
...I'm not getting anything out of the last one here @6:48.
They don't really move for me how weird. 6:55. But then when I look at words on paper they sort of move. So maybe that is a key to dyslexia. The way words are printed.
Look at the tails of the rounded lines. They are sinking into the rounded line making a ball.
TedEd is the god remember? He creates the realm of Science In The Internet!
It would be such a paradox if the brain was so slow because it was always trying to render the future.
You know he created the first glasses for colorblind
If optical illusions don't work is that abnormal?
After watching Vsauce's video about Why You Live in the Past, I feel like I really understand this video.
I was being facetious.
Interesting.
Lol, at least some people can see the humor intended
Thanks for uploading this AFTER I had finished my science fair project on illusions and when it was already judged. Wish I had seen this before. My project looks like shit. :c
excellent
my mind was blown.. a tenth of a second ago
I learn here more than in the school
amazing
I guess your visual processing is broken... maybe.
amazing is that he can prove this
now i can't ignore it!

WE ALREADY KNEW THIS!!!!
Literally? How?
0:58 weirdest way to chew gum ever
We are all mediums !
Ok, I'll try harder next time.
So, we see into the future for about 1/10 of a second, that's cool...
also Scishow
Should mean that your brain is not compensating for the 1/10 of a second delay. It should also mean you would be bad at sports and a potential danger while driving. xD
genius!
God that nose sound
Why do we see illusions? The things that grow in the cow fields, of course
OMG, I can see the future!
That was the longest explanation of perspective I've ever heard.
I kept thinking it was me.
Illusions?
Really, if the human brain had been Created by an Intelligence it would be feeling ashamed of itself and would be putting the final touches to a much better version right about now.
look at the middle of it, and stare at the middle. It should start to ever so slightly, twitch.
pro-tip; thanks!
google: "Segall, Campbell and Herskovitz"
Anyone else notice the nose whistle
This is how you roll it between your upper and lower front teeth. Give it a try! :-)
he just wants the flavor not the whole experience

Hlo
But I can't see illusions I just see this as they are why is this is what I what to know
maybe your the next step in evolution in terms of sight
It's ok, many people judge before knowing all information
dat NOSEEE!!!! IRITATING!!
No, we unconsciously PREDICT the future and observe the prediction. No one can see into the future.
He does need to smile though... For the chiddens.
it's an illusion
but he already told what he knows.
The weird thing is he's my uncle
wow thats cool. but heres the thing. nobody, cares
@@MihirRaiNotSubTwo ok sorry

Really? Cool.
Yeah Jack, SWEEEEET. stop being stoned at college and then ill talk
lol
Ok. You were too subtle though. Nobody got it.
LOLipop!!!
That was weird >_>
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHA omg this guy...
@oaccessasia lol
I wish I was a cyborg. :(

Cool
I can't get hypothesized
