The only thing wrong with this song is that it is not long enough. The great harmonies, the awesome walking bass line, great hammond organ and of the just terrific jazz guitar riffs by Larry Carlton. The last song on the legendary Nightfly album.
I never heard them do it live, except Donald just put out a live nightfly album with this song on it.

I remember the day I bought this album in 82. I was already a Dan Fan and was so curious to hear Donald solo. To say I wasn't disappointed is an understatement. It remains a favourite album to this day, and this is my fave song on it. Great reaction, love the channel!

This whole album is so enjoyable from start to finish. The instruments and the beautiful harmonies blend into shades of Steely Dan. A lot of the songs were written about Donald's life in the 50's and 60's.
Nominated for 7 Grammys, The Wall Street Journal in 2008 called this album one of pop music's sneakiest masterpieces. Just sensational. Great reaction. Thanks Harri and The Outrageous One for a great tune. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦

You owe it to yourself to bathe in the brilliance of Donald Fagen where he commands the "New York Rock And Soul Revue: Live at The Beacon". This is like a super Steely Dan Live with A-list stars such as Michael McDonald, Phoebe Snow, Boz Scaggs, Charles Brown, Eddie and David Brigati.
For an added treat his climate change song "The Weather In My Head" off his "Sunken Condos" album.
Don't forget the other half of Steely Dan, Walter Becker and his album "Circus Money".

  • @stevemariman8769

DF can really play all those vintage keys so well! Hammond organs, Rhodes pianos, piano, Moogs etc. His solo albums are outstanding, and deep wells of satisfying, groovy music. The Nightfly (1982), Kamakiriad (1993), Morph The Cat (2006), and Sunken Condos (2012). "New Frontier" "I.G.Y." "I'm Not the Same Without You" "The H Gang" "Tomorrow's Girls" a cover of Dion's "Ruby Baby" "What I Do" "The New Breed"(with Michael McDonald) "Countermoon" "Good Stuff" "Green Flower Street" "Century's End" "True Companion" "Florida Room" "Big Noise New York" "Security Joan" "Mary Shut the Garden Door" (way more)

Musically, _The Nightfly_ could have been outtakes from _Aja_ or _Gaucho_ . Lyrically, however, _The Nightfly_ is the polar opposite of those other two--there is a nearly complete lack of cynicism on it, and is full of hope and wonder.

Donald Fagen says this was dedicated to all the music he grew up listening to in the 1950s. I was only born in 1958 so I had only heard a small amount of what he spoke of as I grew up in the 1960s and 70s. But this was the first 100% digital album ever recorded and released for public consumption. Digitally recorded, mixed and mastered. It sounded superb back in 1982 and it sounds superb now in 2022, as well! And the music is timeless! 😉🙃😎💘🎸

If you're a musician, especially a pianist, you understand what genius "Maxine" is. Chord voicings go beyond anything outside of the most complex jazz...and yet it swings with beautiful harmonies. "Maxine" was installed in the Songwriters' Hall of Fame as one of the greatest compositions of the 20th century.

While the ‘40s style vocal harmony says “Ohhhhhh Miami!”, I have and will always hear it as “Ohhhhhh whammy!” It’s such a catchy song, and to this day I’m honestly not sure if I like it or don’t. Great reaction nonetheless. Be well!

I bought this album when it first came out (the Night Fly). Amazing, but you have to admit that while it was a solo effort by Donald Fagen, it was Steely Dan. Walter Becker was an important contribution to the genius duo of Steely Dan, but Donald Fagen was the heart and soul of Steely Dan (RIP Walter!!). Listen to the whole album (excellent in all aspects) and you will hear what I mean.

The g in Fagan is the hard g, as in "got". (little factoid you probably already know: the hard g sound is English, and the soft g sound is French.)This song and "The Goodbye Look" are my favorites on this album. Maxine and Ruby are good, but it's this on and The Goodbye look that I love the most. This is straight jazz.
