I started my cordless journey with the really old 12V drill and then a few years later with the 18V Dewalt 5 piece combo kit when I did an addition to a house many years ago. I had been using corded tools on the jobsite for a couple of decades before that. Once those started to fail I moved up to the 20V Dewalt units and it's been a great change. The 20V batteries have lasted without fail for almost 8 years; the 18V batteries started failing within a couple of years. Really like my Dewalts, you will too.I just bought the 20V Pruner, I think its the DCPR320B, and you would likely love that in your back garden! My shop is very "black and yellow" what with the Dewalt, Stanley, Stabila, etc. I just built new shelves in the garage and decided to go all in and paint them black and yellow. LOL Cheers, Andy!

Hi again Andy. A few years ago a friend of mine turned up with a DeWalt screw driver and I was so impressed I bought a case containing a DeWalt DCK296 MS drill and a DCF 815 driver with two 18v and two 10.8v batteries. Having left them in France I bought a DCD 795 drill and a DCF 886 driver. Having been reunited with my first case I now use all of them; the 10.8 drill for light work and the 18v for driving screws through sleepers. Great kit. Keep keeping up the good work 🌞

I bought the 776 as a combo with the 885 impact driver a few years back, and they've been bombproof for all my diy projects.
Have also built up a small collection of Aldi and Lidl stuff for things I need less often, mostly saws. Decent quality for not a load of cash.
Andy, I'm a senior and just dabble in DIY these days but my battery combi came from Screwfix many years ago. I followed the recommendation of the guy at the counter. He asked about my expectations and likely usage and sold me a model for, I believe, £100. It has been excellent, well behaved, does what I need, 2 batteries and it was definitely £100 very well spent.
Model numbers really frustrate me, Currys are the worst. They promise to price match, but will claim ABC123-CURRYS, ABC123-JOHNLEWIS and ABC123-WHOEVER are completely different models. So they will price match, but only with themselves and the public get scammed into thinking they have a bargain with that price promise!
Great video, just bought this myself from B&Q as my handed down Parker drill battery was fizzing and blew smoke lol 😆 I watched many videos, browsed the toolstation catalogue, looked around the Web understanding the different types of drills, powers, sizes etc and B&Q had this on the shelf. Already seems way more solid and wanted a DIY drill with teeth that will last me and my partner for a long time in our new home 🏡 👍

Great content as always. I’ve had a dcd778 for a few years and it’s done everything I’ve asked of it. Interestingly the front chuck housing on mine is fluted plastic, not metal as yours is - they must have changed the manufacturing run at some point. Keep teaching us 👍
I have several DeWalt drills and the one with the metal chuck is actually more difficult to tighten as it's a bit slippery....got one recently from b and q complete with battery and charger for £60..they had three on sale..I would have had all 3 but a bloke behind me wanted one.😁 Admittedly the battery was only a 2ah but I just chucked that on my torch

Exactly that, for me, the metal one was a step backwards,I actually returned one due to the poor tightening grip. The plastic version for me, is far better
My Dcd778 from the States also does not have a metal chuck but a plastic one....Strange stuff

Bought my first Dewalt combi 15 years ago and it's still going strong. I've tried both Aldi and Lidl battery tools but they have never performed well for me. You get what you pay for most of the time. Old adage but true!

I have quite a few 12v and 18v Makita tools, several 12v Milwaukee, some 18v and 40v Ryobia, and the old 14.4v Dewalt (for some tools I rarely use, but am not ready to get rid of). I think buying the tool you need based on total price is probably the best choice, as no platform has everything and all the major brands seem about the same. I love my Makita stuff, but I started on Ryobi just for the hot glue gun (which is the best glue gun I've ever used), and now have a variety of odd tools in the brand, all of which I like. For 12v Milwaukee, I wanted tools for Pex-A and a lantern, but I also have a heated jacket, electric screwdriver, and a few other things, and I love them all (except the little underpowered cutoff tool). I got my dad a Dewalt kit a while back, and he is thrilled with the tools, so I think I could have gone that way as easily, and been just as satisfied. I have three different Makita drills, and the mid-size hammer drill is plenty powerful, while the big one can rip itself out of your grip if you don't put the extra handle on it. I will say I have a Makita variable impact driver which has plenty of settings, and while it's not as powerful as some, it's never failed to drive anything I wanted it to, and with the lower settings I no longer drive screws though things.
Got 2 of them years ago and were well used when i got them. Still going strong. Hammer action isn't great so got and SDS for that. Torque is great for IKEA stuff! Sometimes connectors rust out so maybe open the handle in the Makita one. The makita multi tool is a beast IMO.
I deliberately chose the non-hammer version of this drill to preserve its life. I’ve got a corded Bosch SDS drill and not having any hammer action on my cordless drill makes sure I use the SDS anytime I need a hammer action.
My original combination and impact drill were Makita but were more suited for DIY. When I needed something above that level my cousin had Dewalt and s we were working in my son’s salon I purchases Dewalt. Very pleased and over the years have bought body only cordless tools and have quite an extensive range. Combi drill gave out smoke and was replaced with the same model you have. Can’t complain at all about reliability or durability as they really have had a lot of use and continue to do so. Purchased additional batteries when I find an offer.

Re SDS. I am impressed with the Evolution unit. It’s so light and yet goes through anything like butter with apparently no hand vibration. You might have more experience so be able to criticise it more.
I have lots of Dewalt, Makita, Milwaukee, and Bosch tools. I also have a parkside Plunge saw and Wired SDS hammer drill(bought mainly to use as a breaker) - The Parkside tools have been great! No complaints at all. The Parkside as a breaker has saved me a few times! Couldn't really ask for more from either(The one negative of the Parkside plunge saw is that it doesn't come with enough track to cut a full length of board, which is basically it's purpose)
Interesting review. My first cordless tool was the 9.6 Makita drill/driver. I purchased it on a trip to the States way back when. Since then, I've owned tools from whichever brand had the best tool at a decent price. Of course, when pretty much everything was corded, it didn't really matter what colour they were - only that they worked well and fitted into your budget.
At one point, I owned mainly Hitachi cordless tools. The price/performance balance was good, and working onsite, they were less likely to go walkies than the more popular brands. Since then, I've purchased cordless tools from Makita, Ryobi, Bosch, and, yes, even Lidl and Aldi. Okay, the Aldi and Lidl tools probably wouldn't last long on a building site, but when you see a cordless grinder and a multitool for under a tenner - on a special - well, it would be rude not too.
I had the 778 for 4 years and it was an excellent medium sized lighter household DIY drill, handy for around the house; though chuck had to be replaced for a decent Rohm. Problem was when I worked it hard as a pro-tool, as shortly after it started smoking and then the clutch went. I know someone who bought the drill with 2ah batteries and regretted it, as they just didn't last. If I just needed one drill for occasional jobs around the house then I would buy it again.
Thanks Andy, interesting to hear your views on this, trying to pick a range of tools on a single platform is a nightmare and you never know what's coming down the line, so you sort of just have to do a little research and get on with it and hope for the best !
I too am on multiple platforms and even within brand and range like the Bosch 12v ( was 10.8v ) there are different chargers for the larger capacity batteries. I really like this compact range but it is still fairly limited and some of the devices are really pricey compared to competitors.
It gets even more confusing when you add garden tools into the mix !
I’ve had makita for years and moved over to dewalt for newer purchases and extremely satisfied. I gone through two makita drills ( smoked on anything tough) the angle grinder would overheat and switch off. A multi tool great for a year or so the packed up. All replaced with dewalt and going strong working hard every day.
Love the impact driver and multi tool ( lever blade change fantastic) oh and dewalt reciprocating saw a beast.
Makita jigsaw has been great as has 36v mitre saw. Festool plunge saw amazing ( will replace with cordless at some point. Cordless really has moved forward making main’s powered outdated.
Have you seen that Screwfix have a DeWalt impact driver now on sale at £49.99? Might be worth getting to try?
Iv has the same drill and impact driver equivalent for about 7 years now they've took a beating and used daily and still going
Im perfectly happy with my Makita 18v tools. Though in fairness they dont see the useage that yours perhaps have had. Have even got a hedge trimmer and strimmer for the garden. The best one i have is a recep saw though. Personally i would just replace like for like. But thats just me. Great vid Andy.
I go for Dewalt and Ryobi as my two platforms for cordless tools and my choice is based on budget thinking and price points, if I need a tool but can’t justify a Dewalt, I go Ryobi and they often do deals via their mailing list. I mostly tend to go yellow. Also, the platforms are somewhat interchangeable via an adapter (Dewalt batteries to Ryobi tools). I’ve never ever been disappointed with Dewalt, Ryobi has some great tools but they are a bit hit and miss and some are poor. I’m also not a pro so they don’t get constant use day in day out. Red always seems at a marginally higher price point, so I stick to Dewalt and have been happy so far.

Hi I don't know if anyone mention but I think you are missing belt hook and magnetic bit holder on the side of that DeWalt. You can get them on the auction site I don't use the hook that much so I got magnetic bit holder on both sides of the drill otherwise its a good drill. Thanks and I'm looking forward to next review.
I’ve had good luck repairing a few “smoked” blue tools, with a simple brush and/or brush holder replacement. I don’t know about in the UK, but in Canada, parts are pretty easily available and inexpensive, even if the batteries themselves are extortionately priced. I’ve a pair of (heavily abused) combi drills waiting for parts, that will need about $100CAD to fix the pair. There was a window when buying a drill+impact combo, you could get two tools and a charger for about the cost of the batteries, so I have an embarrassment of choice when picking up an impact. Now, just a 3Ah battery starts around $120CAD, unless you can spot a sale.
I use both blue which I bought & yellow which are provided by work. My blue impact driver is great I think, but the combi drill I find is a glorified screw driver not much more use than that. However the yellow combi drill I do find is much better than the blue.
I swapped to team yellow a few years ago and have found the DCB118 rapid charger reduces the number of batteries you need. It's a fan cooled unit and charges from blinky light to full in around 15mins. I'm not a fan of leaving lithium batteries unattended when charging so the speed of this charger allows me to charge one battery whilst I'm using the second.
I like the idea of having battery adapters for different makes. Or even a battery pack round the shoulder and an adapter cord to the tool so it'll be lighter too. A sort of corded cordless!!!!!

With my own money I buy Yellow.......
Had to use the warranty a few times and it was hassle free and very fast....
I'm in the middle of a large renovation / extension. I've gone almost entirely Makita purely for battery compatability. but my wired tools are based on the amount of use it will get. I bough a Titan concrete breaker 20 years ago, it was cheap (about the sane as a days hire ) has seen quite a bit of hard work but still going very strong.
I was interested about what you said about Evolution and can support their customer service as second to none. to the extent that if I was buying a battery drill etc. I would have a really good look at those too.

I have stuck to one battery platform to make sure I don’t find my self short of magic pixies the make them go. Happens to be yellow and black. Corded stuff I buy best for the job including Bosch and Festool
I have the 996 battery combi, very powerful but torque settings are rubbish on the lower end they don’t cut in soon enough.

It is quite funny that some folk think that the tools they buy are the best and are better than any other brand and get quite defensive about it...at the end of the day I mainly stick with one brand due to interchangeable batteries and my tools have to work hard and help me earn money so need to be reliable...with good easy warranty if required... There is little to no difference with site tools between the brands..
Only reason I use Screwfix is since I'm impatient and can collect it straight away. 👍😂
I got the same kit as you Andy a few years back, now have load of yellow stuff because of the batteries. Also got the 5ah set at the beginning of the year just to get the 2x5ah batteries as it was cheaper than buying just the batteries.
Edit to add the dewalt impact driver will probably be half price at ScrewFix during black Friday, has been the past few years

I have four different battery platforms for different tool makes, but as 95% of my work is done in the workshop it just means I give up a little extra space in the corner of the shop. My motto is always to get the best tool for the job that you can afford - different batteries or not.
Most of my battery tools are DeWalt, but I also use Bosch plus a couple of Parkside (Lidl) tools and a couple of Budget tools with their own rechargeable batteries.
On a side note I originally bought a Budget (brand) drill for about €10about five years ago just to get me out of a jam, it obviously doesn’t have all the features or the power of a more well-known branded tool, but the battery lasts forever and I use it every day for light work - it’s possibly the best €10 I’ve ever spent on a tool and since then I’ve added a few others simply because they are so cheap that they are almost disposable, although they are all plodding on and all get used regularly!
Hi Andy I agree a good combi drill will last you a very long time. I have a Makita DHP 458 which is not brushless but it easily handles all my needs and best of all the chuck runs true with no wobble at all. A little heavy but it's bombproof lol.
The 453 model you had was not the budget one but the entry level of the LXT range. The budget range is actually the G series which has different style battery so not compatible with LXT.
Your new Dewalt looks decent and the chuck looks true which is not always the case with Dewalt.
I'm not a professional but a reasonably advanced DIYer. Good video mate keep them coming.

@GosforthHandyman You are welcome. Also forgot to mention if you go for a dewalt impact check out the chuck first. A lot of play and wobble. I got a DCF 887 which to be fair was a good powerful machine but the wobble let it down. I returned it and later got the Makita DTD 154 which has 3 modes and plenty power and chuck is much better and fairly true and will tackle a wide variety of needs. The 778 is always being discounted, I have one , I bought it for the 2x 5Ah batteries and charger it came with...it's not bad. If you really want a nice drill, try the DCD 805, some nice deals around tool only and it will drop right in the case the 778 comes with and just move the 778 body on.
The 805 is quite the beast compared while being actually shorter in length.

I bought the DeWalt drill/impact driver set with 2x4ah batteries for £200 and they’re spot on but only had light use. Getting the 2 batteries i then bought the Jigsaw bare tool and its compact and powerful but a lot of the effectiveness is in the blades as with most saws. I’ve been on site with it a week fitting and its not skipped a beat.

great vid, would also recommend a newbie to get a lighter duty drill (10.8/12v etc) if they see one at a good price as they are easier on the wrist, smaller and will do alot of day to day jobs

There are black & gold limited edition makita s I was told the black and white was more DIY level just like the green Bosch’s whereas the blue Bosch like makita are more PRO level.
Hi Andy, as always a good honest review, I only have one battery drill (Black and Decker) it is a good one and very handy for working outside, but being in the workshop I use main's powered tools I have 20 double sockets on a ring main, all around me they are spaced out every metre so no trailing flexes or extension lead's. My be one day I might buy some battery tools. Great video, take care👍

After years of aldi and own brand tools i decided to treat myself and have several Dewalt 18v tools now. (Even tho the bulk of my renovation days are over).
Great tools and the lithium batteries are amazing.
Charging time i think depends on the charger model number. I have a 113 and a couple of 115's and they have different output currents.

What is an “amper hour”? Do you mean amp hour?
Btw, there are battery converters out there so you can still use your existing batteries on a new tool line.
The trade off is they can be cumbersome and weighty.
So, if you're a pro, then that extra weight will weigh on you by the end of the day.
That's the reason why they make aluminum pipe wrenches!
Hi mate, only subbed to you a few weeks ago so I'm a newbie to your channel. Not sure if you and your subscribers are aware, but if you manually tighten the chuck with your hands, then turn it back one click it locks the chuck. I have found this to be most effective whilst using hole saws as they can tend to come loose and release the arbour. Just a quick tip 🙂👍

Some older batteries don't have charge indication on them.
I find that the Erbauer tools from screw fix are not that bad they are around about the same price as any other brand
Both firms make decent tools at a range if prices and levels. Having batteries for both is ideal if not lugging around all day. Can then pick and choose the best tools from each brand.
The 887 is the impact driver to go for. They have a cheaper one, but the 887 has three torque settings, so it can be used on fairly delicate screws as well.
My 725 is also still going strong after 14 years of DIY use.

For me it does not make sense to change platforms due to the battery being proprietary
It’s £149.99 with 2 5Ah batteries today. The makita equivalent (not sure of the exact drill spec) is £179.99 with 2Ah batteries. The Milwaukee offer is, I think the same price as the makita but with 2 4Ah batteries.

Natural progression for me…Yellow (Dewalt) to Blue (Bosch)..then Yellow+Blue = Green (Festool). Still have about 8 or so 1617EVSs. Stationary tools went Grey(old Delta not the new stuff eg 2003+) now tan (Some Jet) & mostly Gold (PM) except 1 Yellow (Dewalt planer w Byrd head). Colors are fun!

@@Macron87 Not at all. Though will say, never did care for B’s sanders, they sit in a cabinet unused. The 1617s, 12v & 18v drivers & impacts yep those were a step up over Dewalt of the time and team Blue is (knock on wood) still going strong after many years of use/abuse in the shop and on job sites. Will say, for the house…not the biz shop, did recently purchase a Dewalt 20v pole trimmer & 20v work light theyre “ok”. I was in a pinch & needed the trimmer and it was the only one in stock locally. It’s starting to show its “weaknesses” after less than a year. Same w work light, light won’t stay in position (rachet mechanism) and no way to adjust. I like it, but wouldn’t buy again. Bosch, stopped buying, other than 1617s. As I get older, don’t like changing bits/setups. For what they do, hard to justify a ton of Green’s routers over the 1617s. We do have a couple of 1010s and a 1400 in the shop and like them a lot. But 1617s, are the “workhorses” in the shop. Best Dewalt tool we’ve had experience w is the DW735 (w add on Byrd), IMHO, best tool D ever made.
But still, for us, Yellow->Blue->Green. Only regret w team Green is not jumping on the bandwagon sooner, but…don’t care for their drills. Buddy of mine has several of em, and personal pref I just haven’t gotten to like’em so far. Mother couple of years if I’m still kicking, may change my mind.
Now if you wanta talk about biggest disappointment over the decades (ok, let’s leave Porter Cable/Delta off the list), Hitachi. First tool from them was a PR12. Best (non-Helical) portable planer we ever used, bar non. Got into their hand power tool line. The love didn’t last long. They went downhill fast. Not a single Hitachi tool left in the shop nor the house, they just broke or wore out w no replacement parts etc. Same thing happened w their hard drives after they were sold off. Mind you, I used to work for Hitachi (telecomm) and I stopped buying their products even when I worked for them.
At this point in our shop I’m very comfortable w a color-mix. Try to pick the best tool in each category for us and our use cases. So Bosch and Festool for hand power tools, some Woodpecker red (love those Paolini’s &their stainless bladed tools), lots of Jessem. Stationary & misc: Some ooollldd Delta, some Jet (their cast iron rusts faster than any other brand), lots of PMatic, Oneida Vortex components, Cal Air tools (several from 1gal upto 60gal), PCable nailers, Castle, Massca (threw out Kreg), Bessey, Wilton, Lie Nielsen, Veritas, Mirka, Fisch, Pfeil, Mitutoyo calipers/mics/h & d Gauges, Haas, Mitsu-Trane, Noga, Orange, Hardinge, Harvey, Whiteside, Amana, Tekton, Gearwrench, Wera, some Wiha, Vessel, Goodyear air hoses, Prusa, Iwata, Harder & Steinbeck,etc etc.
Those are some of brands who have a tool or category of tools that we’ve found work for us, not on a “for months” basis, but for “many years” basis. All those listed I would not hesitate to repurchase the same type of tool/tooling from and would also be willing to try other categories or types of tool/tooling from.

These 778s are famous for the notorious chuck wobble
Owned by the same parent company, I bet the come out of the same factory in China.
I’ve noticed that there a quite a lot of specialist tools are only available of one platform so a concerted effort from the parent company to make us buy a different platform.
I go for dewalt and ryobi but I only use dewalt batteries I have 3or4 badaptors and they work just fine for me. Whatever tool I want to use I always hav a battery avilable.
In all honesty, I’ve been all in with Makita for a good decade or so, but I’m starting to move away from them. The main reason is because a lot of the new tools are just not lasting. I had a blue SDS which was absolutely bombproof but my apprentice accidentally dropped it off a ladder, it happens. I replaced it with a near top of the range blue SDS drill and within 3 months it needed a warranty repair. It came back and the clutch went about 2 weeks later. Sent back and came back completely inoperable. Had issues with a fairly new impact driver too where it just keeps refusing to turn unless you shake it vigorously beforehand! I’m a professional and I need my tools to just work; true things do break and go wrong, but if I’m sending of a tool every few weeks because something has gone pop, it’s not really viable to keep doing so.
Now I’m being slightly more diverse with it. Continuing to use my Makita tools that are still working, as they give up are being replaced with DeWalt and Milwaukee. As a lot of my batteries are due for replacement soon anyway, it seems like good timing.
That Makita drill is the cheapest home gamer option. Not a fair comparison but the DeWalt looks like a decent drill. I also had that same impact and recently upgraded to the top end Makita. Night and day, by far the most used option is the lowest power mode! Oh also to add Makita charge faster but you need to have the rapid charger.
That dewalt is also the cheap shitty one
Both are budget pro / semi-pro but defo not 'home gamer' options and both are around the same price! 👍
When you get the new rattler a nice bit of red would look nice . The Milwaukee 12v cordless tools are absolute pocket rockets and really compact .

When it comes to batteries, I've got more platforms than St. Pancras. I started out with Dewalt, and now I've got just about every colour under the sun except the Hikoki 36 volt. I promised myself that enough is enough, no more .....and then the blighters come out with a 36 volt 1/2 inch router!

I spent the past couple of years adding to my power tools, and was doing okay for a while buying body only (naked) models. It got to a point where I was in need of more and bigger batteries. Then I saw the SF deal with 2x 5Ah batts for £150. Considering the batts alone would have cost £100 a pair, for just £50 more I was getting a 2nd drill, case, and upgrade charger. No brainer.
I did consider the replica batts at one time, but all the negative reviews seemed to suggest there are a lot of faulty DoA batts, and I couldn't be bothered with a returns process.
I don't have any corded DeWalt tools, as they seem overpriced. Titan, Einhell, Parkside are all fine for plug-in work at a fraction of the cost.
Parkside cordless tools are fine to begin with, but the batts brick themselves after just a couple of years. Bit of a false economy.
Yeah, I've had really bad experiences with replica batteries. I never buy batteries from Amazon now. Just don't know if they're fake. 👍
I have everything from bosh to festool, I have a few makita tools ( nibbler, biscuit jointer and planner ) we used to run makita drills but found them really easy to break. A slight fall/ drop and they break in half. The drills are fragile. Dewalt are OK but prefer milwakee now.

I had Makita tools for years, now they're mostly DeWalt, they work great and I have a lot of batteries that fit all the tools, but one battery lasts for days in normal use.
P.S. MY DEWALT SDS has been a complete workhorse.
I'm invested in dewalt. Have multi 18v batteries so it makes sense for me to buy more tools from the range. And dewalt is good stuff, yes it has its flaws but any manufacturer has flaws.
One thing I will add about this particular drill, it's useless for 1.5mm drill bits.

I have the cheaper version of the dewalt combi with the plastic chuck and it suffers from all the problems you mention the Makita has. It's not packed in though, and it's about 8 years old, although it has felt like it's on the verge of going South for about 7 of those years. I've not replaced it because I'm actually intrigued just how long it'll go on for.

Iv never found cordless drills very good for drilling into brick walls, i find it hard going and always resort to my mains sds.
Why go for mains ...get a cordless SDS..re brick walls it depends on the block work...if you are drilling into aerated block you certainly don't need a SDS..

I’m still a makita guy but have found the chucks on Dewalt are generally more centred and have less run out than other makes. Bosch blue are the worst in my opinion

Also have a look the dewalt 54volt sds drill it goes through bricks like they arnt there. I’ve invested in 54volt batteries for the 54v and that works on the 18v tools too and basically doubles the runtime. The 54v reciprocating saw is great as well. Hacked through a 6inch tree stump and took it out with no stress at all.
The 18v can also have adaptors so you can use dewalt batteries on makita and the other way round.
It is the same company that owns dewalt and makita.

B&D own DeWalt. As far as I am aware they wanted to create a trade/premium brand because their own name and reputation had fallen. Had a cheap B&D impact driver. Needed a spare part and it was a DeWalt part.
Same company now as Stanley I think. No B & D but watch out for the cheapest DeWalt if you're expecting professional grade tools.

Good for you buying what you want, the days of colour loyalty are gone with the use of cheap battery adapters. It’s all about what works best for you and your price point.
The Makita DHP453 you did have is better suited to a DIY user, to be fair I’m surprised it lasted you so long.
The Makita that you need would be the DHP481/DHP486 these are much more powerful and better suited to your working needs. Black and white Makita tools are limited edition aka legacy edition tools.
Real question is, if you care about cost why didn't you go for Ryobi?

Not got one but Yes what I have seen Dewalt impact drivers are the best!! they look so compact to. aldies Impact drivers are AMAZING!!! I have 2. got a spare for like £12. can not fault them. so AMAZING!!!

I use dewalt so really have no issue with you bashing Makita but the theme seems to be that you don’t like Makitas cheaper ranges.
Not really apples to apples with the two drills and the sds is the cheapest they do with multiple better options

Do you also have Erbauer tools? Any comparisons or opinions? It's very affordable compared to the good brands like Makita and DeWalt. But I'm not sure how the experience differs.
I've had a couple of erbauer tools. Both broke fairly quickly! The impact was good while it lasted, but that was about two renovation jobs. I've been happy enough with their drill bits.
I have a set of erbauer - combi, jigsaw, orbital sander and multi tool and they are great. I bought a DeWalt combi this week and I have to say, other than extra torque I really prefer the erbauer. More comfy to hold, and even feels a bit smoother somehow. Erbauer is a great brand

I recently switched to HERCULES...these brushless tools r every bit as good as anyone elses...and bout half the price
Btw, battery chargers have no value outside of if you don't have one.
A lot of combos are cheaper to buy if you need another battery, it's sometimes just as viable to buy a combo.
Batteries are the highest expense of cordless tool sets.
So, you end up with an extra drill and charger for the basement tool bench so you don't have to run back and forth to and from the garage with cordless tools!

A couple of decades ago, Makita was the go to tool of choice for contractors and pros.
Now, the title has definitely been passed down to Milwaukee tools. Every test I've seen has Milwaukee coming out on top being top rated.
It will change in the future, I'm sure.
Btw, I bought my share of DeWalt over the years and been happy with them too.

Milwaukee Is all fur coat and no knickers its failure rate is ridiculous there's always parts going in them yet they have this reputation as being the porn star of the brands I was going to change over to Milwaukee but glad i didn't inside its cheap hollow rubbish from what iv been told tho Milwaukee used to be supreme quality power tools but like most things nowadays chines made crap gets added to everything.

Really interesting your combi drill died, I have loads of Makita stuff over 12 years old, and the only item that has died is the same combi (in blue). Bought replacement last year, was drilling with a hole saw and smoke started pouring out of the back. So now I’m careful with it and nurse it a bit. Theres clearly a design or production issue with them.
Dewalt also make an adapter for their older system to use the new batteries 🔋

You buy into a system. If you're starting out buy the best combo deal of cordless tools possible in your price range that you'll use and then just get whatever else you need as you go along.

The white is no different to the blue of the model numbers are the same. You had the 453 combi drill which is the entry level one. The Dewalt you have now is more midrange so comparable to the makita DHP485 I think.
I've migrated away from a combi drill, for things hammer action I prefer to use the SDS as most of the time the hammer on a combi is pretty lame. So I've ended up with a drill driver and the SDS for when I need hammer. I used to use the torque settings on my old combi for screwdriving.
It's a bit strange that these companies have so many combi models and have much less choice for drill drivers. If you need it, use an SDS. I'd rather have a lighter, less complicated drill driver.

I mainly use the SDS for brick... or if I'm doing a lot of holes in concrete block etc.
