@@matthewrease2376 It's mostly unoptimized code made by Sonic Team themselves that is leaking through, since we've been looking into the slowdown for a while. A good chunk of it should be fixed next demo.
So many nice touches here: * The background of the stage showing through the holes in the wall in GHZ Act 2, as well as the prototype-style rolling ball being added. * The bonus stages looks great with more colour and larger sprites; I always liked the way they looked so it's nice to see them with a bit more fidelity. * The 16-bit remix of the boss music sounds great; I always preferred that grimy, jazzy sort of sound for boss music over the more serious, military-sounding ones from the Mega Drive games. * The newly-added second boss for GHZ also made me realize how few Sonic bosses actually make use of the momentum and physics. Think about it - most of them are almost entirely platforming based. Having to build up speed in the half pipe in order to reach Robotnik was a great idea. * Bridge Zone looks fantastic.
AMAZING! I've been dying for sokeone to do something like this (combing the md and gg versions and remixing them to Hell and back) forever. It feels amazing to see it be done so masterfully!
@@zac9181 False. The original poster is also false for different reasons. It's all SMS zones + 3 concept art zones (two of the originally planned zones got merged together, poster was working off a very old announcement I made in the public server once).
Dude, this is incredible! This is exactly what I imagined when thinking of a definitive version of Sonic 1. The welcome sign at the beginning, the unused assets brought back, and so much more too. Great job implementing the Bonus Stages from the SMS / GG Sonic as well, caught me by surprise when I saw them, as well as the second Eggman phase. One thing I hope gets ironed out is the new music, but that’s really it. Hope you keep enjoying to make this ROM as much as we like consuming it!
I remember back when the first demo came out, just a couple months after the 30th anniversary of Sonic 1 and the series as a whole. It's the reason I now prefer Sonic 1 over Sonic 2 (yes, you heard right). I look at this hack through the lens of an anniversary title because to me, it's the perfect culmination of both the Genesis and Master System versions of Sonic 1, as well as the emphasis of platforming over speed (that's still present) that I love about Sonic 1; it's almost surreal that this even exists. I can only imagine how players would react if Sonic 1 looked like this back in the '90s. Many people call Sonic 1 the weakest of the mainline Classic Sonic games because of how much better its successors are in comparison. But if this was the version of Sonic 1 we got all the way back in 1991, it would have honestly been on equal footing. But then again, nothing would be the same as it is now, would it? On behalf of the community, thank you and the team for helping give life to this wonderful love letter to Sonic 1. You are absolutely one of my favorite channels on this platform.
Despite the reinvigorated Genesis/MD scene pumping out dozens of new games, there is shockingly little Sonic content. Makes this fan game extra special.
Woah, this looks cool! If there's one criticism I'd give though, it's that the sound design can feel a little chaotic at times, especially in the bonus stages with the music and bumper noises.
This isn't just remaking or reimagining the first game (or games technically in this case) this is basically making a "Zero Mission" type remake of the game and dang this game when through some changes from the SHC build
So am I the only one who's not getting excited because I can recall dozens and dozens of projects just as high quality over the years, yet NONE of them *actually get finished*. How many Sonic fan stuff can we all get excited about over and over for it to be abandoned before we stop expecting any finished products? Nothing against whoever is making this one but the track record of sonic fan projects is, well, miserable, to put it lightly.
I’m loving this Project so much. If I could just ask for one thing, it would be for the Mini Boss theme to be reverted to the one from the previous release, as I feel the lower key suited Robotnik’s more menacing nature in the first game. Overall, fantastic progress. 😁
I love how you added the water cave element from GHZ2 ala Master System version! And the big ring releasing a bunch of small rings is brilliant. Excited to see what comes of this
That ship has sailed since they released Origins and the new lore seems to be that the Master System/Game Gear titles happened some time after the Mega Drive ones. But combining the titles and making definitive versions of games like Sonic and Sonic 2 would have been far more interesting. Telling the complete story of each location/island like this is far more compelling. Fantastic work!

Nah, the music's by far amongst the least CPU-intensive parts of the hack. Most of the slowdown boils down to object logic needing to be optimized more (which we are already doing).
