I just can’t decide. I do lean towards Matt’s points. However, it would be exciting to be able to see the lake breakdowns. Torn. Thanks Dave and Matt!!

how about a keep or cull on lead in tournament fishing?

  • @HawgWyldFishing

Yea, one major difference in fishing and anything else. In any other sport, you know what you’re trying to accomplish and where you need to be to do it. You know where the endzone is before every drive. You know where the fairway is from the tee box and, where the green is from the fairway. You know where the rim is on the basketball court. You know where the ball needs to go to be classified as a home-run. As an angler, you have no idea where those fish are going to be when you leave the dock that morning, because they could have moved off of that spot over night. You will only know if they are there by going there to scan around and find out. And then you still don’t know what they are going to want to eat or, if they are actually the right kind or caliber of fish, or if there are enough of the right kind and caliber of fish there, to accomplish what you’re trying to do. Even with forward facing sonar, you have to find the fish before it can help you with anything. Even if you have 1,000 waypoints on a body of water, you’re still going to need to pick and choose the right times to go to each of the right spots, to maximize your ability to catch enough of the right fish, to end up with the bag that you needed. Fishing tournaments is like golf, if you played with no caddy and you had to put a blind fold on before you make each stroke. You can see the goal until you’re in the act of trying to hit the ball. Then you are blind until after you hit it. That’s tournament fishing in comparison to competitive golf.

Would love to see a format similar to the TAA with little/no practice waypoints. I thought that was way cooler about that tournament over the no FFS. Feel like it really pushes the competition to its limits.

I started spending a lot less time fishing for off shore fish when GPS became popular. Off shore spots became to easy to share. Every advancement in electronics makes off shore structures more crowded. That being said Satellite Imaging and GPS tracking and Mapping is great for finding your way into those sneaky spots. I use modern technology a lot for my own purposes.

What if they just did away with the information rules altogether since they are so hard to enforce?

It's tough. One of the great things about MLF Cups and Opens was going in blind into a tournament. And maybe at the top level (Elites, BPT...), I think no waypoints would work. At the Open level, you are going up against locals who know where everything is. Would be a huge disadvantage for non-locals.

Would love to see a tournament where you just show up on Thursday and go fishing, with no practice or way points, just see who's the best that figures them out.

I am a cull, more off time between tournament and practice would nullify waypoints. However, I am watching to see the best guy, catch the biggest bags, putting it all together on tourney days. Home court always has advantage, way points or not.

I laughed when I saw that rule for the Lanier tournament. How did they police it? OK, you wiped your unit clean. But what about the piece of paper in my wallet. There's no way to police the rule. So why have it.

  • @user-dx1en3px1f

My question is, why would you need waypoints when you hear the Elites talk all the time about the fisheries changing each year? Having waypoints clearly doesn't guarantee success...of course it helps but does it really if these fisheries fish different every year or everyday of the tournament, in fact? With FFS does it really matter anyway? If they graphed the fishery and studied the potential ledges and points, would they be allowed to bring a physical map with hand drawn waypoints?

Mercer I agree, these pros need props and my hats off to them. I fished a 2 day on the Ozarks this weekend, I was beat up! Got off the water day one and passed right out when I got to the house. Day 2, I was dead! After 2 days I hardly made it home and these guys fish a week at a time! Pre fish then tournament 4 days. No way I could do that, hats off to them all. True sportsmans they are!

Way points don't mean there will be fish on the spot they have saved. Though if there is no practice then it makes sense. But if there IS practice... Way points just help you practice faster.

  • @KGPFishing

There should be no waypoints going into pre fish. Don’t know how you regulate that but that would be the best in my opinion Dave.

I see both ends on this one. We’ve lost the purity of tournaments I think. Most of my waypoints are in my head. That one dock, that tree on the point, triangulation of between this house and that rock, etc. That being said I love technology to help put me on fish faster and make more of the little time I get on the water between work and kids and everything else. I think the biggest thing is the nostalgia loss is what people are missing which technology is taking away from is. Gone are the days of 90% of the field beating the boat docks and laydowns. Fishing today is not what we grew up watching on TNN and ESPN. That’s the hurdle that us as 35-55 year olds need to get over. It’s not how “we did it”. It’s an ever evolving sport just like everything else is and it’s our job to take that technology and learn it. Also yes I have livescope. Yes I use waypoints.

I don't get the no waypoints rule. Is it there to give an advantage to the locals? If you have a milk run on a lake , you don’t need waypoints. You know that stuff from heart.

I agree that waypoints earned through time on the water need to stay. There are some anglers who are naturally talented, and then there are some that aren’t, those anglers just work harder than everybody else. You take more away from those harder working anglers with competing with no waypoints

Cull, I fish ponds a lot and I don’t have electronics to store way points. But on those small bodies of water I keep mental points of where fish catches happen. Why can’t the pro’s save the way points that they put in the work finding fish on. It’s the same concept just stored on electronics because of the size of the body of water & the number of bodies of water the go to each year. The way points are part of their mental storage system
