  • As winter approaches, the estate is being transformed. In the house, renovations commence on the grand staircase. It's taken a year of planning... but no one's thought to consult Lord Bath.
A revealing new series that goes behind the scenes at one of Britains most extraordinary aristocratic estates.
Lord Bath has handed control of the 190 million estate to his eldest son Ceawlin. But challenges lie ahead, as he and his newly-titled wife, Emma, take on a staff of hundreds, two villages and a safari park, along with the enormous Elizabethan family mansion.
In this episode, the handover gets off to a difficult start. Ceawlin upsets Lord Bath when he moves in, and the couple stop speaking to one another. In the village on the estate, theres further unrest, after Ceawlin puts up the villagers rents.
Meanwhile, Emma settles into her new life as Lady Weymouth. She now has the run of the 130-room historic house but she must get used to sharing her home with a daily stream of visitors.
Over in the safari park, the animal keepers watch the family from afar, and wonder how Ceawlin will compare to his father. Lord Bath is a flamboyant, controversial figure. Although now in retirement, he continues to enjoy a famously open marriage. Various wifelets still visit when his wife is away.
    Hugh Bonneville narrates.

Having met the old Marquis over tea at Longleat just a few years before he passed, I hope he was assured that he had left this great British historical treasure in the capable hands of his son & heir, who has chosen an intelligent, level-headed and well-educated life partner, who wants to help her husband preserve a part of British cultural heritage.

Now, for them to keep their inheritance continue they've made all these improvements. I think speaking in terms of rich and poor is just a matter of a huge complex of inferiority. where does Daddy Longleat meet the wifelets when he hardly leaves that room? Is he on posh Tinder or something?!And more importantly, its quite bizarre that the deep racism that Emma is still experiencing-including from her mother in law-is not mentioned at all. In that regard, the wifelets become minor distractions to the deeper social, racial and political contradictions of this marriage. Very good on Cealwyn for standing firmly by his lovely wife but this should not have been 'airbrushed'.

I would have thought the son would have told his father about the new paint job.. They must not be talking therefore he assumed someone would tell his father. I just hope that when I get as old as the father I'd have enough since left to let the next generation do their thing. I'm certain Ceawlin's grandfather would have been disappointed in his son. The father has just become an obstinate meddling old fool instead of a doting and proud father/grandfather.

Well you must remember that Lord Bath has spent his life there and it has been his life all that time. His son has come in and wants to make changes which no one wants to have forced upon them, I can understand and sympathise with the son but I also understand Lord Bath's feelings too. One wants change and the other wants continuity. Just so maddening though for Lord Bath to take umbrage at the re-painting of the walls, the curator was quite correct in wanting the walls painted in the original colour to better show off the paintings. All that care and time in taking down the paintings and then having to put them back - infuriating for the son and curator.

Some ppl.s brains just work differintly and computers just male pepole lazy and cairless. what the women needs it a part time assistant who understands Clerical work . Personally i feel a greater sens of accomplishment when i am able to do clerical work without the aid of a computer.
