    “Limit your scope of work.” That is excellent advice for both pro and novice. Establishing the upper limits for safety also makes for practical and common sense. Home RenoVision shows true wisdom born from not closing the blade and years of thinking about what’s actually going on. Years from now JT can bask in the satisfaction of saving us lots of money and time in places throughout the world. A fine legacy. (And snow in Ottawa!)

    I have the green bag, and am about to rip everything out! Watching your videos to get the courage. Just replaced the entire whole house drain system (57 year old house) with ABS, and now onto replacing everything in the bathroom, taking it down to the sub floor, and replacing a few sub floor boards. Oh, and with the two new rain barrels on the way, I need to install a PVC line through the outside wall, and over to the toilet (flushing with rain water). PEX might be a better choice considering they are smaller, and possibly of higher quality? Not at that stage yet, but will be within the week.

    When all else fails, I use heat on to loosen the drain. I also, when possible, at about 4" to 6" I
    cut a 45-degree piece out of the lower corner opposite the plumbing wall. Then I can lift the tub up and out (by myself).

    Hi Jeff, I love watching all your of your videos.
    I plan on taking on a full on diy project for my basement.
    I want to space out 2 rooms, and 1 full size bathroom with washer and dryer outlets and pipes etc. Curious to know if you think I should do it all myself, or should I first discuss it with a professional plumber or general contractor in regards to the division of the space. What other aspects should I consider , such as where is the french drain etc.

  • @1zebula1
    @1zebula1 3 года назад

    Hey Jeff - doing this on my second floor main bathroom. Got contractor quotes to move my toilet and curbless shower (watched your schluter video and your shower membrane video) awesome btw! - the contractor said:
    "We will not build a curb less shower, you can't get enough slope to drain the water freely without overflow in the area outside the shower. A house needs to be framed during construction prepared properly with a dropped area below the rest of the floor to create a slope. Also, you are planning to move the toilet, most toilets are situated in the corner because they connect immediately to the main stack, a toilet drain is a large drain pipe that cant be drilled through floor joists without compromising the structural strength of the joists. The only way it can be done is if a structural engineer designs re-enforcement made from steel. not sure what we can do for you based on your wish list."
    For the shower slop, i'd take the subfloor off, add a wedge the joists put the new subfloor down to the vertical drain - done.
    For the toilet - I had all other GC/Trades folks (licenced plumbers) say they can do it.
    Now i'm skeptical!? Thoughts.

    Do you have the water shut off the entire time or do you turn it back on from time to time to allow for other usage around the house?

    If you couldn’t get the drain out, one trick I use at work is loading two hole saws on to the same Chuck. One that fits inside the drain and a larger one to cut the flange.

    When you started using the reciprocating saw to cut the wall it made me think "what's behind that cut line? A stud? Wiring? Plumbing?" Seems you were careful to cut at an angle so the blade didn't penetrate too far. Your thoughts?

    could you do a how to remove tile flooring on cement floor or tiling on cement wall. I love watching your videos and I've learned a lot, but quite of bit of the work does not apply to me because i live in the Bahamas and our structures are mostly concrete blocks -- no sheet rock, wood walls, wood sub-floors, etc

    Hey Jeff, love your videos. When removing the bath tub, I know it’s important to shut off the main water valve to the house. Being a first timer demoing and renovating my bathroom, this process will take me two weeks. When can I turn on the water valve again for the rest of the house? How can I secure that line in the bathroom from causing flooding in my bathroom.

    • @goldentalonconstruction7289
      @goldentalonconstruction7289 3 года назад +1

      Are there shut-off valve in the bathroom waterlines? If not, have a shut-off valve installed in the bathroom waterlines , then close them. Therefore while you are working on the bathroom, the rest of the house will have water.

    Took almost a week to reno our front bathroom. Cast iron tub had to be broken to get it out. 3/8" gypsum board on the studs with up to 1/2" of plaster on top of it with almost as much wire mesh in it. Combine that with nails for the gypsum at 2" o.c. Had to wear a mask and safety glasses, until the glasses fogged over (someone needs to invent a mask that doesn't do that and no the ones with the vent for exhale still don't work.) Floors were particle board nailed, screwed and glued to the 1x sub-floor. It was way more work than planned.

      I have recently been using moldex masks. they fit perfect over the nose with no air leaks and the vent works perfectly. Cheers!

    Have you done a bathroom that has a shower insert, removed and put in a new tiled surround? We've never done one and our shower needs replacing and I hate to buy another insert and have it break down again. Plus we may have issues behind the insert when we remove it.
