    Hello Mike from 🇨🇦. Yes this video is 5 years old but I still like to come back and watch it . You make it look so easy. And I KNOW IT IS NOT. You inspire me as a very new turner to go out in my cold garage and try to make one of these. Thanks for all your instructional videos you produce for us out here in RUclips LAND . And as you say. Cheers

    Nicely done. I think that leaving in the little "oops" and fixing it with the jam chuck was done very well and you showed that such a mishap is not the end. I think it is really important to leave these accidents in our videos, at least once in a while. (I have had my share of disasters) I like to say that what makes us better woodworkers or woodturners are those mistakes that we must fix. And you turned a beautiful ornament. Thanks for posting. Sam

      Leaving the accidents teach us to things that we really need to learn. One of them is that we are normal when we see that the best even have mishaps. The other thing is showing us different methods and techniques to reenter the piece back into the to production phase and keep going. You guys are all an inspiration to so many

    Hello Mike,
    Beautiful turning resulting in a stunning ornament.
    I've turned some lime in the past and it's a joy to work with.
    Also, I've been trying to master texturing and spiralling and found that it doesn't work with all woods but lime gives a great result.
    Best wishes,

    Good to see how that is done rough shaping and drying the wood. I always wondered what everyone did to dry the green wood for the bowl or platter or any other rough turning green wood. I would imagine you would do the same if rough shaping wood for turning a box ? or do you just let the wood dry naturally and then turn the box from dry wood ? Thanks for your great vids I watch them all.

    Mike, thanks for the video. Now I see why you ended up with a wide hole in one end. I would laugh but I have gown thru to many bottoms myself (lol). I have you considered making a small hollowing tool out of an Allen key wrench. I believe Sam Angelo (wyomingwoodturner) shows some tools like this and they say they are great for ornaments.

    Beauty there, Mike. Spot on! A question on the glue block: I note you have a series of concentric rings penciled in on the block. May I assume that is for determining the optimal position for the glue vs. the object to be glued?

    Looks great Mike. At the 11:36 mark your left thumb is near the joint where the base of the top finial joins the top of the globe portion. Below the top finial there is a small band of white then a dark line or accent band. Can you tell me how you did the darker accent band. Thank you for your time. I know the video is 3-4 years old but the ornament is great.

    I have to say that this is my all time favourite video of yours Mike. This is where I gotten inspiration to try a couple hollowed pieces with a spindle gouge. Question for you; when you were turning the bottom finial and went to make the tenon to fit in, you had some tearout from the parting tool. I get that occasionally. Any idea what causes that?

    • @MikeWaldt
      @MikeWaldt  7 лет назад

      Hi Corey, and thank you. It comes with the territory when using a parting tool I feel. However, if you "plunge" cut first this reduces, and even can eliminate the small amount of tear out. Here's a link to a video which shows this very well, watch from 1.14 if that's all you want to see, but the whole video is well worth a watch.

    Mike...Your turning is Awesome! I really like the combination of woods as they contrast well with each other and really enhance the final turning! Always a wonder to see 'professional' turners like you make a mistake like we 'novices' do and then capitalize on the error... Makes us feel better and learn new techniques to recover from an issue...or did you PLAN it that way? ;>) Anywho, I really enjoyed your turning as always and wish you a wonderful and very merry Christmas!
