    Despondent is the perfect word.
    The Scottish game left me with a feeling of genuine pride after how hard we fought back despite the loss, the England game was more irritating than concerning and even though we got smashed in the Ireland game via the scoresheet I thought we put up a really solid effort and you could argue we were unlucky in the final few minutes to not only not get a second try but also go another 7 points down....But after the match today I just felt so...Down. A game that should've been in our wheelhouse to win and we get drubbed by 20 points because of our sheer lack of depth and direction in the midfield. Properly disappointing stuff and I think Italy will win next week. (My grandad was Italian so I'm clinging to that lol.)

      Yeah you’ve basically described how I’ve felt about every game. I was positive through the tournament but today has left me very deflated.
      Ha ha yeah hold onto that would. They are defo on the way up and I don’t know how I feel about where we are now. Our best hope is them dropping the 25 cap rule but I dunno 🤷🏻‍♂️

    I find that it really doesn't help that we're just genetically smaller than most countries, it's not been uncommon that the likes of these French, English and SA sides have always been far bigger than us and historically we've struggled to deal with their superior physicality. Because of the lack of investment in the pro game, it's really starting to show it's ugly head with the lack of conditioning and quality coming through recently

    • @TheWelshSportsPodcast
      @TheWelshSportsPodcast  7 месяцев назад +2

      Yeah so spot-on. There’s not a lot you can do about pure freak athletes. But the way things are going at the moment we’re just simply not developing enough players of quality what the answer is, I don’t know.
      The quickest fix is to scrap the 25 cap rule. Whether they’ll do that, I don’t know.

    Cheer up bro! As a South African and proud Springbok supporter I also felt despondent after our 2018 57-0 loss to the All Blacks. We had no hope. In South Africa our political leaders were again at that time talking about even taking away the Springbok symbol representing the national team because they(the boks) were so crap.... and we all know what happened after that loss..... We got a new coach, Rassie, and everything changed. The same will happen with Wales. I believe you at your low now, but you clearly have the talent, you just need some belief and imo at the minimum a new strategy.

      Yeah thanks mate, love the positivity. I was just a bit down in the dumps recording that video straight after the game. My only worry compared to South Africa is you have successful club sides and all of ours are struggling so who knows🤷🏻‍♂️
      Thanks for watching all the way from SA👍🏼

    Desperately trying to stay upbeat and take the positives.
    There are shoots of real growth. Dyer, Wainwright. Reffell, T Williams playing out of their skin. Mann and Winnett have had some solid performances, North and Watkin have been quietly decent. Roberts was mixed at 13 but could be a real find in a couple of years (gotta love a lefty kicking option). Grady needs more exposure at test level but could be amazing in the same way Roberts could. Decent stock of players covering the second and back row.
    BUT
    I'm not convinced any of the options in the front row or at 10 are true international level (Costelow MAYBE one day in the future might be a test 10 and Dee has done as well as he can). But without test level players at 1, 2, 3 and 10, Wales will never compete with the big sides in world rugby. Will Lake coming back fix the issues? I'm not sure personally
    Also, a few players need to just be thanked and quietly moved on. Elias has offered nothing this tournament and I can't see him improving as he pushes into his mid 30s towards the next WC. Gareth Davies looks clueless and slow and past it.
    Adams has become a Cuthbert where everything that made him good at the start of his career isn't there anymore. His tackling is slipping, his pace has dropped off, he doesn't seem to be able to compete in the air anymore, he won't take on defenders like he did, doesn't come off his wing looking for work etc etc. Whether he is injured or just past it I don't know. Maybe a summer at home rehabing could do him some good.
    Tompkins not sure what he offers other than looking busy these days which is sad because I'm a big fan of his but have to be realistic
    It feels like the beginning of a long long rebuild ...

    • @TheWelshSportsPodcast
      @TheWelshSportsPodcast  7 месяцев назад +1

      Really good comment mate, thank you very much for taking the time to watch and give such a good talking point.
      I agree with all of your positives I think also getting minutes in a player like McKenzie Martin is useful as I see him as a potential long-term successor to Toby. Man has showed he can compete at this level and given a few years and a couple of extra KG he’s going to be a real beast.
      As for your BUTs again, I completely agree, Gareth Thomas is great around the park and a decent enough scrummager but I think the biggest issue is that tight head and I don’t really see anyone coming through to improve that. Asseratti should improve with time, so let’s give him the benefit of the doubt for now.
      I also think beard needs to be quietly phased out as we have a myriad of young promising second rows in the regions.
      I don’t think Tompkins is an international player he’s clueless and chaotic and well I like someone who tries hard it’s not enough at international rugby, especially in such a pivotal role
      The issues at 10 will continue, unless they bring back Anscombe to plug a hole or they the cap rule and give Hawkins a try

    • @jonathoncollins6861
      @jonathoncollins6861 7 месяцев назад +1

      I forgot Martin, agree he could be great given a few years and time to grow into the sport.
      It sounds so simple but a reliable 10 and a scrummaging tight head and Wales could really go places. I just don't see where either of those things come from sadly.
      None of the 10 options excite me that much unless Sheedy has stepped it up in the last couple of years or Sam Davies or Patchell get dragged back from abroad and are better than their previous caps. Anscombe is the best bet but hes 33 this year and has been fit for no longer than a couple of months at a time in the last 8 years

    As well as the issues with a small player pool in Wales, our Wales based players are playing within loosing squads at regional level. Compared to the French players who are playing within successful teams. The rot of the regional game has finally reached the senior Wales squad.

    • @TheWelshSportsPodcast
      @TheWelshSportsPodcast  7 месяцев назад +1

      Yeah, I think that’s such a great point. In previous years, the coaching staff has generally been able to galvanise the squad and bring them up to a standard.

    Get Immanuel Feyi-Waboso back to Wales and send Gatland on a road trip around NZL and pick a few Maori boys with Welsh blood and get them on the plane back to Cardiff. As a Kiwi, I thought Adam Beard and Tomos Williams had great games. Wainwright, Reffell and Jenkins looking good. If you have good loose forwards you are half way there. Wales missed the experience of George North - still love that guy. That French tight 5 are monsters though and they were brutal this weekend. Good luck for Italy.

      😂 that would be nice unfortunately I can’t see that happening

    We don’t have anyone at 10 who is remotely international level…. Costellow was shocking in the first half …. Terrible kicking from hand …..again fell off tackles like a teenager , one costing us a try…. We need a 10 …. God knows where we’ll find one though…… front row again can’t compete for 80 mins….. we are in big trouble….. I can only see a couple of players of the quality required for international rugby in our whole squad….. very worrying going forward.

    Given the list of Wales players who in the last couple of years, for one reason or another, have become unavailable to play in the national team, this loss of form is inevitable, I think. The loss of Alun Wyn Jones, Ken Owens, Dan Biggar, Tom Francis, Josh Navidi, Justin Tipuric, Gareth Anscombe, Toby Faletau, Rhys Webb, Liam Williams, Louis Rees-Zammit etc, cannot be repaired or recovered from easily or quickly.

    • @TheWelshSportsPodcast

      No, I don’t expect it to be and I wouldn’t expect it to be my warriors. I don’t know if we have the structures in place at regional level to develop enough players of those guys quality that you just named. That’s my biggest worry. Tbh

  • @clivesilver463
    @clivesilver463 7 месяцев назад +4

    Hard to stomach that second half performance, I don't know where we go from here yes France had a monstrous pack but Wales played right into their power game, loose kicking right into the dangerous French backs they bring it back with intrest then its pick and go huge players blasting holes, the momentum was handed to France on a plate.
    We needed to keep that ball off the field not kicked to The dangerous backline.
    I feel Wales are at the end of the line, and next week We need to win by a bonus scoreline, we need a radical shake up at regional level and every other level because we are not producing enough quality players, I don't know how long the Welsh public will tolerate this because the French crowd were louder than us, and how long will Gatland stay he may insist on huge shake up or he walks, its vey difficult to be positive after that, but some players are working very hard and giving their all unfortunately I feel many are not Adams I feel is not looking for work like Dyer, Beard is just terrible, but who do we bring in and this is the problem the cupboard is bare.

    • @TheWelshSportsPodcast
      @TheWelshSportsPodcast  7 месяцев назад

      Yeah I agree with everything you’re saying Clive as always. The easiest fix first of all is to scrap the 25 Rule. At least that gives us a few quality players quickly.
      Outside of that, I’m unsure without some decent investment. We’re going to continue to fall backwards. Not sure if you saw Squidge Rugbys last video talking about Welsh 10s. But he went on to break down how the finances are being spent and it’s worrying. If you haven’t seen it go and have a look mate.
      Let’s hope Gats can pull out a big performance next week, or maybe even finishing bottom of the table might be the wake up call the WRU need?🤷🏻‍♂️

    I was at the game yesterday and one thing was clear the second the players came onto the pitch....the size difference. Those French forwards were absolutely massive! I enjoyed the game, the French fans gave us an absolute masterclass in how to support their team. We were flat, and they were bouncing. Anyway, my takeaways from the game were that our kicking out of hand is seriously sub standard. Long gone are the days where a Halfpenny or Biggar could find huge touch finders either to relieve pressure on us, or setup a great attacking platform. Long gone are the Adam Jones or Gethin Jenkins huge work rate, mobility, and massive scrummaging power. I cannot agree with your comments about Dillon Lewis. I'm sorry, but the guy is total garbage. He came on, lost practically every scrum, knocked the ball on, gave away a penalty, and looked completely cooked after 5 minutes. There are props in division 1 better than him - there has to be! Adams was absolutely terrible yet again, and there are other wingers who are in much better form than him who we should have had a look at over the course of this campaign.
    However, even worse than all of that, were the totally braindead substitutions. Absolutely no need to take Tomos Williams off - none at all.
    Our regional game is not good enough or strong enough, and don't pay enough, to even attract half decent overseas players that we can have on residency after a number of years. Scotland, Ireland and France are littered with converted overseas players and we are going to have to do the same I think.
    Italians going to give us a tough game next week I think!

    • @TheWelshSportsPodcast
      @TheWelshSportsPodcast  7 месяцев назад

      Thanks, Rob. Yeah, you could sense the atmosphere even on TV that the French were so much louder than Wales. It’s a tough one for the fans because it’s hard to cheer when your team is losing most of the time.
      Yes, Conor, those days where we competed for everything, Andrew could realistically win any game. Not too sure what the answer is moving forward the 25 cap rule, Moscow, first of all and get the likes of Joe Hawkins back in the squad.
      I’m glad you mentioned the Williams substitution. Can we not have a scrum-half who’s playing well just play 80 minutes if he’s starting to look tired, then fair enough sub him. But just changes for the sake of it have caused real issues this tournament, and that to me was one of the worst.
      Yeah Italy, next week will be tough and I think we’ll be underdogs 😬😬😬

  • @gallois3
    @gallois3 7 месяцев назад +1

    Yeah, a bit depressing really and alarm bells for the Italy fixture. I thought scrum time was better than expected, lineouts went well, but gainline ball carrying in the 2nd half was just not there. The French had options to tank it down the middle with the big ballast forwards or move it wide to Penaud, and both worked. Last 15 min and we lose by 20, Italy will target doing the same, momentum disappeared when Davies / Lloyd came on .
    I can see North coming back coz that midfield Menoncello + Brex is strong.
    Will be pleasantly surprised if we pull it off next week

    • @TheWelshSportsPodcast
      @TheWelshSportsPodcast  7 месяцев назад +1

      Yeah all your points are spot on. I’d like to see north come back but not Tompkins. I’m not sure what is going to do. I said in my previous video before the French game that he wasn’t under any pressure. I think now if we lose the Italy game (where is a good chance we will) then the pressure will stop piling on
      WRU needs to change something quick because we are in free fall

  • @garmit61

    I pretty much agree apart from we played really well for long periods against England and Scotland. With a change of luck we could've had two wins on the board and things would look different. For me there are lots of questions but we don't have the strength in depth. With only 4 regions , the player pool is small, more so if you exclude very good players abroad. We can't compete against France or Ireland. Our wings get so little ball that their mistakes seem massive. tactically we are poor. When France went ahead with the try around 60 mins, I've no clue why we played keep ball in our 22 when we've turned over so much maul and ruck possession this year. The charge down from Gareth's telegraphed clearance kick and the stupid penalty that followed closed the game. I had no expectation that we could beat Ireland or England away or France at home. We had chances to beat England and Scotland but choked and we were outplayed by the more experienced Ireland and France. To be honest it would be good for the six nations for Italy to finish with 2 wins and a draw, even if it would be bad for us. But would another poor 6 nations really get sorted out if we heap a big win and bonus point on Italy and avoid a wooden spoon? Would we all forget about it until the Autumn? We need to find another way to get better. The regions are struggling in results and financially, the public still don't buy into the regional system in the same way as Ireland does and we cannot match the English or French leagues. Having recently watched Slammed, we look perilously close to the decline I remember onky too well of the 80s when so much talent left to head to League. As an aside, for the last two seasons I've not bought tickets for 6 nations matches.Asking prices of around £100 a game are crazy. If we enter a third championship struggling to win any games there will be empty seats too.

    • @TheWelshSportsPodcast
      @TheWelshSportsPodcast  7 месяцев назад

      Yeah, I think you actually make a really really interesting point. First of all as you said the prices for the six Nations are just ludicrous. They literally are pricing average viewers out of the game. There needs to be some way of passing on the commercial success of team Wales Onto the regions. At least Cardiff are getting full stadiums, but if they don’t start getting wins how long will these fans continue to turn up?
      I totally agree about the first two games in which we could have and probably should have won I was just so down in the dumps as I really felt like we could’ve won France game but by the end we got completely bullied out of it and I agree about maybe finishing bottom maybe the rocket up the arse that the WRU need 🤷🏻‍♂️

    Hi Christian, I know that feeling a bit numb and speech less, this what happens with a new team against a fully qualified French side and when France done the changes in the last 20 mins there was more qualified plays to come on and then they stormed through us, the first hour I thought we might be in with a chance we were leading and then they were then again it was us it was back and two until the last 20 mins , then it went pair shaped. The parallels between the regional and national sides was and is massively evident now, we are not able to compete for 40+ minutes and teams know it.
    Some of the decisions made by gats and co are made soo much more costly when you don’t have the benefit of depth coming of the bench.

    Costelow played really well in the first half his decision making looked a lot better but I hate to say it as soon as Lloyd came on he had a kick that missed touched and invited pressure back on us and he just didn’t look comfortable at all he kept trying to do it all himself. The centre partnership looked decent but as soon as the bench came on France just kept coming and we couldn’t get out of our half and the atmosphere in the stadium just dropped. On a positive note it’s the best I’ve ever seen Tomos Williams play live he was very good.

As for Costelow, I think he’s kicking game was poor, but his general play was pretty good and Thomas Williams was looking very threatening so I’m not sure why he took them all off so early. By the end of 3rd quarter it was still anyone's game with 24-20 for Wales. So I think overall Wales did ok. The last quarter is when France destroyed Wales. That was literally a siege in Wales 22s for the last 20 minutes and they scored 25 points which is huge. So those 2 teams were well matched for 60 minutes and this was a very good game to watch. It feels like the last 20 minutes, France got into higher gear and suffocated Wales.
    I think Wales should still beat Italy without too much problems unless they do not play their absolute best of course. France defense was very average for 60 minutes and I think Italy will be better in that sector. So it should be harder to score but also easier to stop Italy from scoring. At the end Wales should come up on top. Wales, it's simple, play your best next week or it's the wooden spoon.

    What a player Rio dyer has been this year though mate. Always off his wing looking for work. I actually thought Costelow had quite a half decent game but still dont see him or Lloyd as top class international 10s. Its clear Joe hawkins was going to be the first choice 10 until he moved to England. Maybe callum sheedy coming back to cardiff might help with selection at 10.
    Bit of a hard time but ive never felt this positive about a welsh side after 4 losses. The squads going to be a lot better off after there experiences this year.

      Yeah Rio gets better with every game to be fair, particularly in attack he always looks like he’s going to break a tackle. I thought Costelow was decent too, though is kicking game was poor and lied to me, is just a non-entity at international rugby.
      I think I best answer is to scrap the 25 cap rule to bring Hawkins back, if no one else. Other than that Sheedy or even bring back Anscombe now that he’s in Gloucester.

I would really like to see James Fender in the summer if he is fit and a little more of Teddy Williams

    maybe the answer is to take a leaf out of the Irish handbook. The ruck-1pass-bashbashbash ain’t working, we’re not getting over the gain line, so why not some slick short passes to keep a defence guessing .
    as for the backs, we’ve got no one who could have run full pelt at Ramos - who is not good at tackling - , no one apart from George. that said, it’s only delaying the problem coz he won’t be selected for 6N next year . makes me think of Jamie in his prime …
    hats off to Wainwright who played a blinder, but we need more ball carriers to step up.
    tactics crucial for this saturday, italy will want to copy french and they’ve got the weight to truck it up the middle.
    oh god, i just don’t want to see a repeat, where we concede a stack of points in the last 1/4 , with a bench having no impact

    • @TheWelshSportsPodcast
      @TheWelshSportsPodcast  7 месяцев назад +1

      Yeah I don’t really know what the answer is. Surely these players have the skill and the time in training to implement a game plan that is something different.
      Yeah it’s quite disappointing, whether they didn’t notice, or they just couldn’t execute that Ramos, what’s the weak link because he simply didn’t want to tackle.
      God knows what’s going to happen next week once I get over this match. I’m sure I’ll feel more positive but surely we’re going into the Italy game as underdogs

    Gatland has to go. I can't work out why Wales kick to keep the ball in play, to simply invite pressure back on us, or only to lose territory by being pinned back by the opposition 10 controlling territory. Just kick it off the field and at least play in the right areas. We need a solid 10 with a big boot, among giant forwards.

    • @TheWelshSportsPodcast
      @TheWelshSportsPodcast  7 месяцев назад

      I think Gatland got a few things wrong for this game. But I do feel that he still the best man for the job. I’m not sure who else we could bring in to improve our fortunes until the foundations and the structure have been sorted.

    There were so many disappointing proformaces. Both Lloyd's were very poor . I think G davies and Adams are past it.. Watkins was ok but was left exposed so often. Adam Beard was so out of it. The bench killed us. Costelow definitely grew in to the game same as joe Roberts.... There are better players just being left in the URC which is so unfortunate.. first half was pretty good. But the last 20 mins killed us. The scrum got hammered and soon as the backs good the ball and tackle there was at least 5 times the back were clearing out because the forwards didnt move. Honestly ive never watched a wales team just give up like today. But there's going to be more pain next week coz we are never beating italy like that and with gatland not picking players that should be in the squad due to form its just going to get worse.

    Wales haven't been too bad throughout the tournament. Caught the French on a bad day after their draw with Italy. Welsh players have all the skills but just lack a power game badly. France made metres every time they carried whilst Wales, unless they made line breaks were always going backwards in contact. Without finding a way to match teams physically Wales will continue to lose to most teams they play. On a brighter note Tommy Reffell and Rio Dyer are world class, Jac Morgan is also and you need him back. Garland will give Costelow the game time he needs to become the full time 10.

The fact Wales have given him this responsibility shows how bare the cupboard is, I guess.
