I am SO glad you noticed that. When I created the texture I realized that we don't have any ores that generate outside of stone in the overworld. Would definitely be cool =)
Well the redstone is giving it power. In the real world we use electromagnets which use an electric pulse to provide us with a magnetic force. Something that would be cool though. The power of the magnet could depend on the power of the redstone signal. So a weak pulse of redstone would only let the magnet push 1 block. But a really strong pulse (from a repeater, lever, redstone block, etc.) would make the magnet push the block 15 blocks.
İ think a cobalt belt should also be added so you can give cobalt features to a material that isnt cobalt. You can also wear and be pulled and pushed around by magnets

I had this idea a few weeks before I saw this video, except the magnet can attract any type of metal item, both as blocks and items on the ground. It will hold the items on the magnetic side until the redstone signal is turned off and the items drop off. In caves, the ore will slowly degrade any metal armor you are wearing if you are near it, and you will hear a buzzing, electrical noise.

A good application for this is quick red stone alarm systems, for instance if u didn't want to spend lots of red stone on spiralling upstairs for alarms- u could have a switched lever that throws the magnet up and then an observer that repeats the process until it gets to its destination- so it activates another magnet indefinitely
Adventure maps! I don't know if that'd be hard to code or if you'd need some way to tie them together or whatever.
With some other ideas from later videos you could revise this idea. Sticky cobalt using slimed surfaces from the slime update (so pushed blocks can be retrieved), of course iron being affected by magnetism, cobalt and iron armor allowing the wearer to be pushed/pulled by magnets (magnetic boots to walk on walls/ceilings? don't know how that can be implemented, but would allow for some fun stuff), Iron golems being affected as well (making moving them around easier) are some of them, sure others can find more.
6:30 early on in my Redstone journey, I made a trap realm with a friend, and my favorite part of the build was a trap room that "self-heals" all of the walls when you try to mine your way out. There was a trigger switch when you enter the room, so the door seals behind you and traps you inside. I originally had the room hovering over (and under) a lava pit, but on a testing world, I expanded the concept to make the floor and ceiling "heal" as well, with everything "healing" at different speeds. The ceiling is the slowest, because it didn't really need to heal quickly, but the floor "heals" faster than survival mode's diamond pickaxe's cobblestone speed, so one can't easily dig their way out. For non-redstone engineers out there (because Redstone engineers probably already know from the description): The doorway triggers the Redstone path to a few Redstone clocks of different speeds, and the rest was just pistons and cobblestone generators. [For added context, this was *also* in an early version of Minecraft XBox360 edition, so there are might be a handful of better ways to do this nowadays.]
I also think that magnets could have other properties similar to Pistons and Sticky Pistons if used right, I would most likely use this for transporting log blocks. Another use that this could come in handy for could be for automatic refill for Dispensers to shoot when combined with a chest with rows of hoppers underneath.

EDIT: after reading through my comment, ideas 7 - 10 should be in the additional dumb ideas catagory but im too lazy to change it thus i wrote this instead.
this is actually really cool! its just i think we need a magnet that has one sticky side like a sticky piston! with the crane idea it would be cool if you had the chest stick to the cobalt block in my opinion. i hope this gave you an idea.
It would be really fun to have a magnet on a stick, that could be used on its own or as an offhand to pull enemies, blocks and gravity blocks, where you could hit an enemy while it’s on the magnet dealing large knockback, with normal blocks it throws them like the block and with gravity blocks they would act like a projectile that still lands as a block, dealing damage to enemies (it could also be that the normal blocks work like the gravity blocks with this, the value or “weight” of the item determine damage).
it seems like there are a few places where they could be improved, like making a magnet push and pull without needing a wrench tweak, and having objects stick to it eg you have a magnet, cobalt, chest, the magnet pushes the cobalt and the chets goes with it, then the magnet pulls the cobalt but the chest stays put because its not attached, if you could stick together (probably with slime at least) then that boosts its versatility
I have a suggestion: Cobalt blue could be placed in the world, it would work just as redstone, but it wouldn't connect to, if connected to pushing magnet and powered it would pull the magnet and vice versa
they should work like a comparator: in a side it would have a input for on/off and the other have a input for up/down. that would make it really automatizable, as it doesn't require player's input
What do you think of magnets? Let me know on twitter!

2d. handheld magnets that are like a 3rd as strong and eat redstone or sumthing.
3d. instead of coating metal with slime, make it slime covered in metal, its kinda dumb but sounds right kinda.
4d. make a block purely just for magnets so its less expensive
5d. make all magnets eat redstone maybe.
I love this idea, there’s so much you can do with this idea
its hillarious SystemZee can make this alone and minecraft needs years for not even a big update
I like that it drops like Redstone and lapis. There will be 9 mainland ores, divisible 3 categories: Simple Drops, Raw Drops, and multiple drops.
If you make a sticky cobalt block... wow
This was a really solid idea. I'd like to see it added to the game.
Ah yes, magnates pull stuff through everything
System : We can push.
Also him : *The magnet pulls*
Man this actually could fit pretty well into the cave update
Oh so this is the video!
It's even better than I imagined.
You should add a cobalt slime block, a slime block upgraded with cobalt, it works like a magnet but it can also pulls other things it’s attached at
it seems like there are a few places where they could be improved, like making a magnet push and pull without needing a wrench tweak, and having objects stick to it eg you have a magnet, cobalt, chest, the magnet pushes the cobalt and the chets goes with it, then the magnet pulls the cobalt but the chest stays put because its not attached, if you could stick together (probably with slime at least) then that boosts its versatility
I have a suggestion:
Cobalt blue could be placed in the world, it would work just as redstone, but it wouldn't connect to,
if connected to pushing magnet and powered it would pull the magnet and vice versa
cobalt hopper exists:
hopper minecarts: look what they need to mimic a fraction of our power
When he said “It’s the spinning wheel of death” The spinning thing kinda looked like a smile face! ;))
This is actually pretty cool, surprisingly fitting for Minecraft. Probably would have to be toned down a bit though.
Idea: Redstone Armor - Applies redstone power to nearby devices and redstone wires you walk over. Power increases for every redstone armor piece.
you know the game design is good when the guy keeps emphasising how cool it is
Magnets would be a very cool block for minecraft!
Also, i think TDOS COC would be proud
Dude, if you could take damage from the cobalt blocks when it’s flying through the air you could make some sick traps.
they should work like a comparator: in a side it would have a input for on/off and the other have a input for up/down. that would make it really automatizable, as it doesn't require player's input
