  • A Monday Musical Moment - Georgetown Alma Mater
Once per month, Campus Ministry features a special late-night interfaith program called "pipe dreams: nighttime music for the soul." Led by our music director, Dr. Russell Weismann, this program features music highlighting traditions within particular faiths, while creating a space inclusive of all faiths.
As we enter week three of our new virtual learning paradigm and social distancing cultural norms, it is time for some school spirit to brighten our day.
The lyrics to Georgetown's Alma Mater were written by Robert Collier (College 1894), and set to the 18th century Welsh tune, "Men of Harlech" (to this day, this tune is often played by many military bands throughout the United Kingdom). The lyrics were later revised by Carol Hession Powers (Nursing 1941) in 1981 to be more inclusive of the matriculation of women students. The university did not become fully coed until 1969.
    Hail, oh Georgetown, Alma Mater,
    Swift Potomac's lovely daughter,
    Ever watching by the water,
    Smiles on us today.
Now her children gather 'round her,
Lo, with garlands they have crowned her,
Reverent hands and fond enwound her,
    With the Blue and Gray.
    Chorus:
    Wave her colors ever,
    Furl her standards never,
    But raise it high,
    And proudly cry,
    May Georgetown live forever.
    Where Potomac's tide is streaming,
From her spires and steeples beaming,
See the grand old banner gleaming:
    Georgetown's Blue and Gray.
Sending our students and alumni lots of school pride from the heart of the Hilltop - "May Georgetown Live Forever!"
    Hoya Saxa

I remember when I first heard this at the end of a basketball game, and all I could think about was my lower/middle/upper school alma mater, which is also set to Men of Harlech.

    Same alma mater as Oklahoma's.
