    Only about consciousness can we be 100 percent sure. That consciousness exists almost everyone agrees. What consciousness means-that’s where arguments and disputations arise. Must consciousness have ‘meaning’? Or can consciousness be a random accident, selected by evolution, the ‘foam on the waves’ of brain activity. But consciousness seems so radically vital.

    In general, Buddhism does not distinguish between awareness and consciousness. The terms are often used interchangeably to refer to the fundamental quality of the mind that is capable of experiencing, knowing, and understanding.
    In some Buddhist traditions, however, such as Dzogchen, a distinction is made between awareness and consciousness. In these traditions, awareness (rigpa) is seen as the pure, unconditioned nature of the mind, while consciousness (vijñāna) is seen as the conditioned, projected nature of the mind.
    Awareness is thus the fundamental ground of the mind, while consciousness is the way we experience the world. Awareness is like a mirror that reflects the world, while consciousness is like the colors we see in that mirror.
    In the West, a distinction is often made between awareness and consciousness. In this view, awareness is seen as the simple perception of the world, while consciousness is seen as the ability to understand and interpret what we perceive. The West is a total beginner when it is about awareness. The reason is, for awareness you need emptyness of consciousness combined with introspection.
    Mind is absolutely a wrong associative label here.

    'What is the meaning of consciousness' is certainly an interesting question though. In my mind, it's somewhat misleading since it seems pretty clear that consciousness, or conscious understanding, is the source of meaning or what constitutes meaning, regardless of the rest of one's metaphysics. Not even a materialist can avoid that conclusion as far as I can see.

    Hi C T T, this topic of consciousness is a very interesting one, it concerns something that every animal uses to reduce the variety of experience, by establishing filters to perception that block unwanted inputs we can appear to be able to manage some aspects of our lives. It is one of many properties that all animals share, like the ability to recognise individuals of the same species no matter what the circumstances and at the same time observe that all other species are also distinct from each other but not the same as us!. There may be some physical and biological foundation for these assertions but the fact is that these assertions are made by us all does not have to have any proper foundation, it is just one of the tools in the kit, one of many things we do simply because we can not because we have good reason.
    One of the most interesting aspects of awareness is the it ceases altogether at the point of death!, unlike every other 'thing' that we identify as 'real' it does not continue to 'exist'.
    For this reason alone I am happy to assert that consciousness does not 'exist' in the same way as all other components of the natural universe. This does not matter of course, apart from the fact that as something of another order it cannot have any direct relationship with any of those real components, it may or may not have 'laws' of its own but they are not the same as the ones we use for describing physical reality. Any explanation of consciousness therefore can only be expressed in different terms, those of emotion, belief and doctrine none of which are subject to reason.
    Cheers, Richard.

    We grow, our sensors such as hands and eyes and such sense different signals and then grow brain cells in response to reflect signals in patterns creating our thoughts and our identity and everything. We are grown and the conscious is grown as well and that’s why leaving the cave/ understanding and then being responsible for our own free will through those growths and once you learn that then all growths don’t seem good or bad but that flow and why it’s not easy to tell you what the meaning of life is besides these cryptic saying that say life IS what you make it and people don’t understand or think inside this box. Once you see the walls of the cage, do you let them keep you in or do you grow? Our form allows us limited time but a butterfly undergoes transformation and is no longer the same but has its patterns and growths reflected in the new, like how memories stay after sleeping.

    Why not ask the Iroquois how The Great Spirit explains the Universe. Just as relevant.

  • @Robert_McGarry_Poems
    @Robert_McGarry_Poems 9 месяцев назад

    This is my take away... It is probably incorrect.
    Consciousness is the universe imparting itself on to us, and awareness is our ability to perceive it. Mind is the place where these two meet. But because we are only ever in our mind the understanding of this complementing is to understand that we create our own universe. And the collective actions of all people in a society help to fill your picture of the universe up (learning). Until you reach the highest level of knowledge/understanding of this mind/universe continuum.

    • @longcastle4863
      @longcastle4863 9 месяцев назад +1

      I would ask sincerely do monkeys, cat, dogs, lizards, dragon flies and worms also create their own universes? Because their consciousness arose in them through the same evolutionary process as ours. To such a degree, in fact, that we share similar sensory perceptual apparatuses (for touch, taste, smell, sound and sight) and brain features as them, which are the primary features that produce consciousness in living things. Does the universe impart itself on all living things in the way you describe or just homo sapiens?

    • @Robert_McGarry_Poems
      @Robert_McGarry_Poems 9 месяцев назад

      @@longcastle4863 Are you asking me because my take away seems academic??? Or are you asking me for clarification? I would assume... Because I'm not an authority...
      What you ask could be answered in two ways, the Western answer: no.
      And the eastern answer: no.
      But they arrive by different means. Western understanding would say they lack an upper cognitive function, and do not possess self awareness. I imagine, that the Eastern understanding would say there is no awareness, so the mind is just a vessel for the consciousness part. If you do not have insight into this compliment between universe and body, how could you shape the image of it? Animals are only moved/driven by the energy or input around them, but lacking awareness means no universe building. That's an interpretation, not an understanding...

    • @Robert_McGarry_Poems
      @Robert_McGarry_Poems 9 месяцев назад

      @@longcastle4863 As far as... consciousness as the universe, acting on the mind, yes. The universe always is, as far as I can tell. And the brain interprets that. Awareness is an elevation above... Again, just my understanding.

    • @imaginaryuniverse632
      @imaginaryuniverse632 9 месяцев назад +1

      A challenge in discussing how the Universe is perceived is that so many words used to discuss it have overlapping or ambiguous meanings like mind and consciousness. Any ten people would probably have 10 different beliefs of what these words mean to them. In conversation it's not as important what we say as it is what people think we say.
      It seems there are many different philosophies about how the Universe works specifically which can't be disproven and a many different views which seem just as likely as another like different many worlds philosophies which I am kind of partial to. I do believe that consciousness is the most likely foundation of nature even though I think it's impossible for us to define consciousness very specifically at present.

    • @Robert_McGarry_Poems
      @Robert_McGarry_Poems 9 месяцев назад +1

      @@imaginaryuniverse632
      I agree. But complex ideas need to exist for the conversation, at the social level, to be useful. I guess my example would be math... I am guessing that complex math isn't a thing most people talk about, but that fact alone does not negate it's usefulness to all of society, understood by the masses or not...
      Western philosophy might have trouble defining consciousness materially, but I think the Eastern philosophical interpretation is that, any action/reaction is a small part of the universal consciousness. So even the photoelectric effect, particle interactions, or more generally energy transference of any kind. The universe, as a self referential object, must have some order of consciousness resembling our own biological human consciousness, or we couldn't be imbedded into it....
      Western philosophy works on material alone, for the sake of language building, as a shared enterprise, between those who share physical space with one another... It specifically stays away from mystical thought as a brand, not because it doesn't want people to have spirituality... But because language is already so tenuous, and fragile. To expand vocabulary, and reach ever more closely to the universal... Which, to me personally, is important for sharing ideas.
      Because while the Eastern philosophy is nice to think about, you can't measure it, there is no language building there, only spiritual/mystical thought. So, to do justice to, trying our best to share these ideas between one another, we need strong, definitions based language to separate individual thoughts, from shareable ideas. Thoughts are ours alone, but ideas live in the space between us. Language is our shared bridge to those ideas... Both philosophies are valid, fire different reasons. One isn't right, or the other wrong. But to understand one another, to be on the same page, we have to share a common language that uses the same definitions.
