Nice video, very informative. I will disagree with you on the only one application strike in a combat situation. "Hard on soft and soft on hard" is the most effective method for combat. While it's true that the pounds per square inch of a closed fist strike is more focused and pin point devastating, it can't be applied as a the "go to" weapon of choice in all strike scenarios. A closed fist is a 5.56 round and an open hand strike is 12 gauge buckshot. I can hit a forehead or chin with more concussive torque force with open hand than I can with closed fist. Try to see how hard you can hit a tree with bare knuckles first, then see how much harder you can hit with open hand. There's no right or wrong, just different tools for different jobs.

I agree for the most part. I sort of disagree on the go to strike. I think that people, at least nowadays, naturally strike with fist rather than palm. I think that when panic sets in they may revert to throwing a fist even when trained otherwise. I'm referring to street fights only in this comment by the way. I do believe that people usually fall back on their training, but they need to actually train, not just go to a class now and then. It also depends on what they train. I think whatever system you use should utilize techniques that are natural movements and not difficult and flashy. That's why I think people should think twice about Kung fu. All the moves require you to move in ways that your body doesn't like, and you have to get used to. It should be comfortable, simple and effective. That's what I think anyhow. Everybody is different.

I strongly agree. I prefer open hand personally, and that is a very goo way to say your point (5.56 or buckshot). Personally, open fist leaves more opportunities to grab or (combo) so I'd prefer that but, maybe that's just my style of martial arts that i personally take. So i agree 100%

You must punch at the end of the strike, if you close the fist tight, your arm will be tight, etc., and will not have explosive power that martial arts commonly teach. One advantage of the palm strike is that the arm can be relaxed to release power at the end of the strike, no need to tighten a fist. Plus, the hand is open and can transition quicker to another open hand technique like a head torque, etc.

Why not use both in a streetfight scenario? Punches to the body and palm strikes to the head and face. You're more prone to breaking your fists punching someone's head (or worse, getting blood poisoning from punching someone's teeth in) than you are to palm striking your opponent's skull or face. While at the same, a closed fist carries more weight and power than a palm strike when striking the soft areas of your opponent's body.

In principle a good idea, but I am of the opinion that hard on hard develops the kinetic energy mainly on the surface, while soft on hard brings the energy more into the entire body. In practice: a hook to the lower jaw shocks the jaw nerves, while the palm strike (lower third of the palm) shocks the entire head, and thus the brain. Therefore I believe that the Palmstrike is the better option.

Interesting discussion. I didn't hear the 'broken wrist' argument before but I do believe there is a greater danger in breaking one's hand (small bones) with closed fist strikes. Plus if you happened to hit his teeth you could be looking at contracting various nasty diseases.
The advantage in self-defense is that it's far easier to throw palmheel strikes from a defensive, non-threatening posture. Especially under the chin (chin jab). If you adopt a boxer's stance with fists half closed near the head (which is most conductive to this style of striking) you will seem aggressive and that is something you want to avoid as it looks bad when the law gets involved. Plus it's easier to transition into clinching from palmheel strikes which is very useful. Presumably you could argue that you wanted to push him back and he walked right into your shot which knocked him out, with a closed fist it's pretty difficult to argue you didn't actually mean to strike him. From a legal standpoint self-defense situations can be murky so anything that might make it easier for you to explain your actions is worth looking into. In my opinion striking with the palmheel from what is known as 'the fence' in combatives will probably look far more defensive (I didn't want to fight and tried to calm him down but the guy was preparing to take a swing at me) which is a big plus when there are witnesses or CCTV in the vicinity.
Obviously the argument of being able to exert more force through two or three knuckles versus the palmheel is valid (basic physics). I do believe that if you plan on hitting with a closed fist you must condition your hands and not rely on boxing methods as wraps and gloves can foul up proper wrist alignment. Whether it's healthy to hit hard objects in order to strengthen the bones in one's hands is another matter better left to medical professionals.
For women it's probably much more natural to strike open-handed than with a fist which seems to be what men naturally go to.

I hit a guy so hard once that my carpals ended up halfway to my knuckles. I was aiming for his nose with my index and middle knuckle but he moved at the last instant so I hit his orbital bone with my pinky and ring finger knuckles. I fell forward and he fell back, on the way down I looked into his eyes and they were pin-balling around, he was out and I knew as soon as I got up I broke my hand. I almost needed surgery and he actually did need facial reconstruction surgery. I recommend open hand or elbow strikes.....

I like the video thanks for breaking it down. My biggest concern is breaking my hand with a closed fist, then I'm down a hand. I feel that I can incapacitate someone with out needing maximum damage and I agree my knuckles would be more destructive. But as you pointed out the surface area of my 2-3 knuckles is smaller so the same force is concentrated leading to damage to my hand. I have definitely crashed my dirt bike enough to know that my palm is pretty sturdy, save over extension by touching my knuckles to my forearm. After all Bas Rutten has a devastating knock out with open hand strike. Either way good content! Thanks

Ok, interesting subject. Sorry for my english.
I disagree with your definition of the surface area for the open hand strike & you can’t regularly strike full power with a closed fist on a skull without generating severe damages on your hands.
I will just add some elements : can you with a closed fist :
    - 1. eye jab / eye gouge ?
    - 2. strike fully relaxed (better speed because no contraction in the hand for open hand strike)
    - 3. GRAB (transition with wrestling/judo or grab his clothes & strike)
    - 4. PUSH your opponent (his head / his torso …)
    - 5. catch & PARRY opponent strikes
    - 6. easily transition with elbows strike
    - 7. easily transition with clinch
    - 8. easily transition from “the fence” (self defense guard)
    - 9. ripping the ear
    - 10. hide the visual field of your opponent (open hand hide more surface)
    ….etc…
    ?

My heavy set 4 year old daughter had been getting physically bullied so much I had practiced with her, some soft defense including a palm to forehead hit . . . in one incident she stated that the bully was now her friend./ In 8th grade a bully had pushed me into bushes soaked from a pouring rain. I wound up and punched him in the stomach. Under his coat was his hard notebook. The one with the 3 steel ring binder. The one you put loose leaf paper in. I broke my index finger at the knuckle. I pretended it didn't hurt and sure hoped he didn't come back at me. He didn't.

  • @ShinobiHOG
    @ShinobiHOG 7 лет назад +3

It's hard to form the habit of striking with an open hand but based on my story I already posted here I just think the open hand strike is the smartest move in a risk vs reward argument. You have a lower risk of breaking your hand, especially if you've already broken your hand previously so you're at a higher risk. Plus a secondary and tertiary strike can be made more rapidly and with a more precise aim than with a closed fist haymaker. Of course, this is a 9 vs 45 kind of debate and when it all comes down to it every individual has to choose for themselves but I just think since you're already in a heightened level of risk with the fight and the adrenaline it's best to do what you can to minimize the risk. If you land even a much softer blow on the precise and perfect area that could easily do more damage than your hardest punch on a non vital area......

I like closes fist closed straight punches, but I am thinking I like open hand hooks because I’m afraid of hitting someone’s skull (instead of their face) and I have longer range with an open hand hook compared to a closed hand hook. Bas ruton talks about This

I used to play that game where you trade hits on the arms.. I had been beaten only once and it was because I twisted my wrist.. So yes it does happen and I'd argue it is more likely to happen with closed fists.. It's been clearly demonstrated on punch bags. The padding of the palm is a good thing, without it, it would be as fragile as knuckle lol.. Only down side to open hand strikes is most ppl don't know how to use them other than swinging for the head which is too predictable

  • @fr.jamesrosselli9701

The demonstration of a palm-heel stroke is inaccurate. First, force at point of impact is also delivered through three square inches: the heel strikes, not the palm. Second, the acuter angle he demonstrates is not how the strike is delivered: there is a snap-up at the end, which multiplies force on impact and can also destabilize the iopponent's balance. So, he is comparing a proper fist strike to an improper palm-heel strike. Nevertheless, my respect to the teacher--Fr. James, Tai Ci for Christians. o\

Some nice ideas, but there is a calculation mistake. When you calculate the force per in² from a 100 lbs punch and make the difference between smaller area (knuckles) compared to bigger area (palm) and come rightfully to the conclusion that per in² the delivered force with the knuckles is higher than with the palm, you miss out that the total force delivered to the target needs to be calculated with the surface of contact. So if from a 100lbs punch as you say 3in² knuckles deliver 33lbs/in² you also only have 3in² of contact to deliver the force (3in² x 33lbs = 100lbs), while the palm strike has 6in² to deliver 16,6lbs/in² = 100lbs. So the force delivered to the target in its sum remains the same.
The smaller surface area of the closed fist knuckles just play a role concerning superficial damage (cuts) in the area of contact, but not how much force is delivered to the head and thus the brain overall. The brain gets rattled with 100lbs force in both cases in your example.
The advantages and disadvantages of the two types of strikes are rather as follows:
    Closed fist:
    - risk of cutting the knuckles on (broken) teeth with direct contact of possible bloodborne diseases
    - risk of breaking knuckles or middle hand bones, in particular when hitting the forehead (the jaw not so much)
    Palm strike:
    - due to bigger surface easer to block with high guard head-cover, also the risk of overextending fingers
    - hooks are kind of awkward to throw
    - about 2in shorter range

I really liked the video, but I completely disagree on the surface area for the palm strike. Other than that it's a pretty good video, with well done explanations. I suppose it'd go against some policy of yours or something, but you could've shown how to properly make a fist and then punched a wallbag or mitt attached to a wall and then show it using a palm strike, to show what you're talking about.
Also, I had this girl that took classes with me that couldn't make a proper fist, I even talked to a physiotherapist on her behalf to see what could be done, and it'd take more work than she was willing to put in. I told her it was completely OK for her to use palm strikes and I'd even teach her how to "translate" the punches to the palm, but she ended up quitting class.

I can vouch for the likeliness to break the wrist with open hand strikes, I was wristlocked pretty bad about a month ago in bjj, probably no where near as hard as a badly landed open hand strike and I still cant move my wrist to 90 degrees. And I still have pain doing pushups etc, pretty crazy how easy they are to injure when bent past 90.
