IMHO it’s the footwork of stepping in and powering from rotating the hips that are the key to effective palm strikes. They work well on the side of the jaw and temples too. A lot of older people have difficulty gripping/making fists and do better using palm strikes when practiced correctly. Older bones also break more easily. Palm strikes can also be done very rapidly in close quarters, without the hip rotation and going for volume rather than power.
