A month before Dirt came out. The audience quickly realized what a treat they were in for.
Lucky Bastards!😄
The smile on Layne's face when he realizes he doesn't have to blow out his vocal chords singing his parts in Man in the Box, just let the crowd do it.
just get that song out of the way, then they could start to play the new album and he could really belt
Even with the sunglasses on you can see it "Holy sheeeeiiiit.... " Like it just dawned on him that they made it.
No hard feelings LA or Chicago fans but Oregon audience rock and crash !!!!
Yes its so cool! And he looks over at jerry and then back at Sean like "holy shit, do you hear and see this?!"
Haha! 17:19 😀
This is a truly legendary performance that happened right on my birthday!!!

Thanks bro!!
Thanks bro... 👍😎
Thanks dude!
Thanks
Fucking hell, the vocals are basically just as good as in the albums. I'm shocked
That is so Awesome seeing Layne smile! Nice job crowd! When a crowd was an actual crowd!!
Not a cell phone in sight
The Wow hall is a great venue to this day
I saw them both nights, such a magical time. Layne asked me for weed from the stage.
Woah! did you provide Layne with it?
Lol at 26:41 Layne says “I’m still waiting for that weed” lmaoo
You are one lucky ass dude!!! What memories you must have!!
Wow, tell us more! Wish I would have been there too. Must’ve been cool, talking with Layne.
Dude you can't just leave us hanging like that! What happened?!
Alice in chains need to be in the hall of fame already😂
Screw the hall of fame. Real fans and bands don’t need acknowledgement from those pricks.
Hall of fame sucks!
You all are so under educated not only in life, but in the sound of music.
Its a shame
@Angus Malroy i bet you work at a super market
@EvanF, normally, one would have to go to a bowling alley to meet a person of your stature...
Layne looks great and sings great in this. Super sad he's gone, but not forgotten. He needs to be in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame....
He looks emaciated asf. 1990,91 and 93 were years where he looked the heatlhiest. This year was horrible for him.
@@aleksastamenkovic5526 Yes he's thin and his voice also sounds a bit 'thin' too. He was using heroin when recording Dirt.
Bless the beautiful person who just gave us more live Alice in their prime!
AIC has basically been my co-pilot through this pandemic.
AIC has been mine since Dirt album (1992).
@Paula Very good👍
They've gotten me through the Puerto Rican flu many times in the past.
same. every day it's what I wake up and look forward to
So good. Just soooo damn good lol
I was at this show. My buddies dad worked at a local radio station and got us on the guest list. I was 15 or 16 at the time and it was a great show. Feel grateful I got to see them.
Layne always cares so much for the fans he always gave it his best to me layne has the most amazing voice and his range is unmatched the band is amazing there will never be another layne !!! I wish we all could go back in time and save him and show him just how much he has touched our life’s and how special he was much love Layne RIP !!!
I'm sitting here watching, trying to place myself in 1992 a month before Dirt came out, hearing these songs for the first time before most anyone. I would've have been absolutely floored. Still am almost 30 years later.
I love this sentiment, I felt the same way!
it was incredible. Seeing Cantrell come out with one of Eddie's Ernie Ball guitars that hadn't been out for very long was cool too. There's a neat story behind that guitar on his Gibson's icon video of you like that kind of stuff.
This version of Rain When I Die is so damn good
Check out this similar version they did the next day:
ruclips.net/video/-3ESRaJ95v8/видео.html
Was lucky enough to see them on heir first East coast tour opening for Extreme in 90', knew nothing about them even though Facelift had been out about 2 months as Man in the Box hadn't yet exploded at radio. Just recall Layne blowing my mind live, no one was that powerful as a lead singer at that point that I had seen. This brings back some killer memories !
Have you seen someone as powerful live since then?
My Dad was the opening act for Gruntruck and Alice In Chains. This is a hidden Gem! My dad's band was Mad Edgar
thats sick asf bro
I REMEMBER MAD EDGAR
@@nocturnal1667 Do you by chance know anyone that would possibly have any footage of them live? My dad lost all of his recordings. If you know of any venues in eugene that would have some old green room tapes that would be kickass!
Junkhead is AWESOME! Thats a one off performance with super cool vocals nuances. I've never heard him sing it like that.
I love how the wide shot looks like it was a high school cafeteria....meanwhile they were getting first hand exposure to the definitive album of the 1990s
It is amazing that no matter what, they can't release a bad song.
Soooo... 2020 has somewhat redeemed itself with this treasure! A huge Thank You to the uploader!!
The best comment I’ve seen from 2020 right here.
I have to say, it's SO refreshing to see the audience just dancing and enjoying the show fully...instead of everybody standing shoulder to shoulder all holding up their cellphones the way people do at concerts today. Everyone here is enjoying themselves the way they should at a show. That is something we have lost unfortunately. In many ways i wish cellphones would cease to exist.
Completely agree. I miss the days of no phones. Just sweat and have a good time with no silly gotcha moments or poser BS
yup, we absolutely rocked the f out no judgement
This variation on the "Rain when in i die" chorus voice is fckn beautiful. No other word.
Layne always makes you feel it in your soul
Saw this tour at Evergreen State College then saw them again in Seattle about 2 weeks later with Screaming Trees and Gruntruck.
Rain when I die and sick man live is rare and badass.
Great to see Layne wide eyed and so animated. Slaying the vocals.
Thanks for uploading this. I miss Alice. I was never into the whole grunge thing but AIC had some cool well written tunes that I could relate to. His voice. Damn. Jerry's riffs just fit so well.
As a side note, when my daughter was in elementary school she was told by one of her teachers that was helping out for the Christmas show that she needed to sing from the diaphragm. She didn't understand what that meant so I said it wasn't about just taking a little breath and singing, it's about taking a deep breath and pushing it up from the bottom of your chest. She said "dad, show me." I had Dirt on the car stereo so I did the ending of Would? at full gas - about twice the volume level of what was on the car stereo. She looked at me like I was possessed by the Devil. She knew I had taken guitar lessons and spent years learning music theory based on guitar but didn't no anything that me singing.
Memories: sitting with your 10 year old daughter in the driveway belting out "If I could, would you?" and then having mom ask her when she came in the house after an hour of driveway vocal fun if she was sick because her voice was jacked. She wanted to keep going until she could get the final "you?" correct. Yeah, it was an octave higher but she got it.
You were never into grunge yet like one of the archetypical grunge bands okay
@@smkxodnwbwkdns8369 I wasn't into grunge? How do you know? While I wasn't completely invested in it there's more than a few songs from Alice, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, the Melivins and Nirvana that I really liked. There's a lot of Metal, Thrash and Death Metal bands that I like but I don't like everyone in that genre and don't get me started on rock, blues and classical music.
@@Swampster70 Because your first sentence disclosed that you senile. And now you’re admitting to even the Melvins, soundgarden, nirvana, and Pearl Jam-what grunge bands are there even left? The poser bands that jumped on the band wagon that no one remembers or listens to anymore? If you like five bands/artists of a genre, it’s safe to say you’re a fan. Particularly of grunge which is a relatively small genre with a brief reign.
@@smkxodnwbwkdns8369 There are more grunge bands than what you think then. FYI it was not any of those bands that started Grunge. Nirvana did popularized it. Grunge is a scene; not a genre. Out of all grunge bands I'd even argue AiC is the least grunge soundwise as they are rooted in blues/metal not punk. Also, Swampster70 guy said he is not a fan of grunge why dispute it and call him senile tf? Dude just sharing a nice memory related to the band geez.
@@jaimecucalon2804 I know there’s more I was referring to grunge bands I suspected he liked and does. I’m aware of mudhoney and the Melvin’s. Also, Alice In Chains is based on blues? No they’re not. And grunge was a kind of hybrid of metal, punk, and pop. Alice In Chains by Dirt and especially by self titled and jar of flies was as grunge as you can get. Down to the morbid somber subject matter and dressing in flannel and ripped up jeans.
astonishing quality! so happy to see Layne crisp clear for once!
Rain When I Die live is just-
*chef's kiss*
Watching this makes me super happy and super sad at the same time. AIC was the soundtrack of my teen years in the 90's and I listen to them at least twice a week even now. I just miss Layne so much - he was our Jim Morrison.
I miss him so much too. He's my favorite singer of all time. I listen to them just about every day, but sometimes I just have to take a break and not listen to them for the day because it just makes me so sad. Or ill listen to their new stuff with their new singer William and I am happy that aic is still going. Mike was cool too.
@@malloryarroy9887 Well said! Mike was a beast on bass, I miss him too. And I agree, their new stuff with William is really good. I love the old stuff but I appreciate what they're doing with new material as well.
This is phenomenal footage. Thank you! From the bottom of my heart.
Holy shit I was at this show. First time I had ever heard them. Me and my band were sitting there slack-jawed at how damn good they were. $5 to get rocked like this isn't half bad if you ask me. And yes Mookie Blaylock/Mother Love Bone AKA Pearl Jam rocked it too. Corrected: I was at a previous show in Feb '91not this one. This was a later show and was $12.50 to get in, still an amazing deal.
Clarification 4 Kroder: Skinyard + The Accused = Gruntruck, who were also f'ing amazing! ruclips.net/video/dj36B3FgS5s/видео.html
What are you talking about? Gruntruck, with an R, had absolutely nothing to do with Mother Love Bone or Pearl Jam, other than having members from generally the same area. Silly.
Where is this place located at? i want to wisit it :D
@@shadowsneak3875 Eugene, Oregon.
@@MichaelSmith-dj2of You are right, I went to the show before this at the WOW Hall that had Mookie/MLB/Pear Jam open. That was in Feb 1991 before Dirt came out. This is in August 92 after the album came out. My bad. Corrected my comment.
This is what I was watching new years eve/night! 2021
Sounds like a great nye
@@symphonyinkart
Indeed it was!
Back when going to a show was fun...!
Going to ANY show today would be fun... Fucking viruses, man.
By far the best rock band of the 90’s if not all time 🤙
Yesssss best band ever
Maybe close second behind Soundgarden.
@@newageassholes HA! Love Chris Cornell & co, but AiC takes it for sure. Soundgarden close second.
38:40 Layne on guitar for ‘Hate To Feel’ 🤘🏼
He wrote the song, same with angry chair.
@@dohmsdek463 and head creeps from tripod
@@Faks.09 ah nice!! didnt know that!
Wow, this is a true gem! New footage of AIC with Layne is incredibly precious! Thank you so, so much for sharing! ❤️
What a way to wake up your vocal chords kicking off with Man in the Box.
Damn can You imagine the Incredible Music Layne & Jerry would be making Today
Sad that The Best Songs are those of his Truthfulness about his Addiction that was slowly killing him
RIP Layne Your Presence in the Music World is Greatly Missed
I was at this show. Everyone including the Band walked downtown to drink afterwards.
I was there too! We all hung out for hours after the show. Cool night!
From a genuine Aic fan THANK YOU for this Gem! Layne Staley forever
I'm 62 and jumped on the grunge bus when MITB was released about when the movie singles was released. I just found this today 12/24/22. Absolutely fantastic. Thanks for posting.
No bullshit cellphones ruining the show. Just a rabid Northwest audience hungry for the new Northwest sound. Legendary footage
I wish I could have worked in production during these years. All analog gear. The simplicity of everything looks awesome.
Yeh but heavy as hell😂
Awesome! Saw them later that year in Oakland with Layne in a wheelchair. "I got a broke leg, thank God it ain't a broke dick!"
As someone born way after layne’s time this is so special, thanks for the post
Awesome close footage as well as a treasure. "...since these guys are stupid enough to let me play guitar I'm gonna do it..." ha.
Thanks for this!!
Jerry is incredibly gifted as a guitarist and songwriter. I've seen him look at the other guys during shows and smile which makes me love him even more.
this is crazy to see the stage setup for alice and how they do it, then to see an empty room turn into such a rockin event that i wish i could time travel to.. i wish i could have been here ... fuckin happy birthday to LAYNE!!! what a crazy singer!!
Love Alice In Chains. They’re all super good looking and so talented. Better than the rest of the bands in my opinion. RIP Mike&Layne
Wow they sound (and Layne sounds) absolutely amazing here!!!
50:34 his smile when he looked at the crowd ❤️
Nice touch with setup. Real time capsule.
Rain when I die sounds so good here
Layne didnt sing the chorus like on the record but that was probably before he decided to do it differently for the record. Still great though.
@@kevinmckenzie6736 that's what I was thinking, maybe it was a working version. I wonder if there's an outtake on the record, using this vocal take - how amazing would that be!
I would give anything to have been at that show. I was 13 at the time and my parents wouldn't dream of letting me go to live shows. As a NW Oregon girl, it kills me that I missed out on this show and on the RHCP/Pearl Jam/Nirvana Salem Armory show a few months earlier. Thank you for uploading this footage.
I was 14 years Old milion Miles away in Europe Poland don't even think I will ever see any of AIC live in my entire life... I did't as Layne passed away SO early but I feel you Oregon girl! We have this footage and many more🤘
It’s interesting that even Layne himself had a hard time hitting some of the high notes. What’s great about that? Imperfection is an amazing thing!
This band knew how to make good music, for sure. Layne was put on the earth to do this, and him and Jerry were the mightiest pair of any musicians, without a doubt. The only thing that bothers me about them is that I was never able to see them Live, but then, that's not they're doing now is it? I love their music...
They’re still playing tho but without Layne 😿
Really cool to see how they put the stage together prior to the show 🖤 quite the production. Really gives you an insight to how much budget rock bands had back in the day
Thank you for posting this! I was there! First time I'd heard any of the 'Dirt' songs except "Would?", which had already been released on the Singles soundtrack.
That stage is SO SMALL!! 😄
I love Mike Inez but Mike starr was the coolest
I didn't realize this was before dirt was released! How lucky is that crowd!
I always preferred Starr over Inez. But Starr seemed like he was a dirtbag...just by his manner and attitude in interviews. Like he was better than everyone else, and I could totally see him sleeping with underage girls. That said, he still was a hell of a musician. Too bad he couldn't get it together and stay in the band.
@@jamesriver3745 lol I guess I can agree with some of that. I mean he was a degenerate drug addict so maybe that’s why he seems sleepy. But the underage girls thing.. not so sure.. maybe boys 😂 lol jk
What an amazing part of W.O.W. Hall history. Thank you so much for posting this!!!
Wow!!! This is outstanding!!! Thank you so much for posting this, what a performance!!!
Thank Goodness for Camcorders ❤️ QC
This literally made my year!Thank you!!!!
Wow, it's amazing what the road crew has to do to perfect a great performance!! Pretty Damn Cool!!!
We work hard. 2020 has killed our industry. This is going to be the saddest, poorest xmas of my almost 50 year life.
Life was so good back then... trust me.
1:30 “party time, excellent” nice lol
Layne is so healthy and smooth and strong. I never knew he was this beautiful. I always loved him no matter what but in all these years I never realized he could be like this. I'm stunned and blown away! Thanks so much for sharing this.
Not healthy, neither is he strong. I mean did you watch the video? He looks sickly thin and this was when he started to use heroin a lot more. The only strong thing in this video is his voice, and its still a noticable difference between his vocals from 1991 to 1992
@@aleksastamenkovic5526 I thought this was after he got out of rehab - not sure when he picked up again, but I thought he looked pretty healthy too. That vocal crack in Man in the Box isn't necessarily an indicator of health, that's a hell of a high note to belt so early in the set. I just know about a year later he looked much worse.. and couldn't hit those highs as cleanly.
@@99bajakid Layne really went by the months after he started using honestly since his sobriety was so on and off at points
Time Warp ! 1992 was a Great Year ....Much Respect for Sharing this Gem .....Miss Layne ..... and Mike ...
Thank you 1000 times over. I was 15 and hadn't yet ventured out of Medford for shows. I have been to many parties there in a later life lol
Holy crap this is a great show! A near-future greatest hits of Dirt-- every song a homerun! Thanks so much for posting
Thank you for the upload, seeing Layne so energized is awesome.

I just found out this was taped by a friend. I was hired as local crew for this show- I’m the guy in the purple T-shirt with long wavy hair 🤣 doing setup. What a show!
Thank you for uploading this. One of the best live vids of them by far. You sir deserve a medal!
Thanks for posting. I love the different way Layne sings the chorus in Rain When I Die.
Right on, Dread. Wasn't at this show, but North Eugene HS class of 1985 thanks and salutes you! I'm sure some of my classmates were in this crowd. A couple of 'em even made it to the Offramp.
