Very nicely done. I really thought it was going to be boring, but I watched the entire thing, looking for more. You made it look so simple. Great work....Thanks for sharing
I'm a pretty experienced leatherworker, and have recently adopted the addiction of wood carving, and this is a very, very good video. Got a couple of my hook knives I'll be using your instruction for.
I know I'm a little late to this party, but I wanted to thank you for the very clear instructions on how to make a sheath for the Mora Hook Knife. I've been struggling, trying to come up with a design and decided to go to RUclips University for the answer. I followed your instructions, and it came out perfect! Thanks!!! ---Chris
I was wondering what I could do to protect my hook knife. Found this at just the right time. Such a good video. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Really appreciate the focus on beginning learners. You have inspired me to go get some tools, leather and give it a try.
Great video. I have not worked with full grain leather. Made a "pipe bag" with split leather and used "glovers" needles for that without having to punch the stitching holes. I will try this as soon as I can get a spoon knife and the leather. Thank you again. .
SUPER VIDEO!!! I've been looking for this video and this is EXACTLY what I wanted! THANKS SOOOO much for taking all the time and effort to share this video with us and I'm sure there are MANY, MANY other spoon carvers who will appreciate and thank you for all your efforts and time/patience to share this with us!!! Safe carving to you and yours ALWAYS!!!
Nice video Buddy, I appreciate the effort. I downloaded it. I am a Bushcrafter and a bit of a prepper also. I have a spoon and detail kanife to get the job done. And a few half decent axes, Swedish and German made. I will be using this video and others to make axe sheaths. I have a few and will buy a few other leather tools to get me started. I am currently making a Medicine Bag because I was told that I should and for practice. BTW, I also like your other Bushcraft and review videos on gear. I find them very helpful in determining what I need and what I don't need.
im a rookie and have long love leather steel and wood so bringing it all together with the proper tools is crucial.. thanks foe the info. just got some blades in the mail and now its time to house them and now ive spent the time learning how.... i alway say the same and practice what zed said so peace.
Thanks for the tutorial - I'm fairly experienced in leatherwork now, but I have to admit, it was very useful for someone to point out how to make the pattern for such a sheath - I was planning to get some made for my next project, many thanks. By the way, if you accidently cut it the wrong way, guys - there is another mora hook knife that curves the other way - you'll either want that eventually or will find someone who does - just keep the piece of leather until you do and make one for that knife too. ;)
aww man now im freakin out lol my spoon knife is in my pack with other goods naked.hope its not damaging anything.honestly I never even thought of this.thank you for another great video
Thanks for this video Justin, I am going to start leather-working this next year and I will add this project to my axe mask project as the first things to have a go at. Very informative and I'm looking forward to giving it a go. Have a great Christmas and New Year brother, and I look forward to even more videos in the coming year!
A quick and simple cover I use is 1 inch webbing double the length of the blade folded over and stitched on both edges. It is flexible and slides on over the point of the blade. I keep my knives in a tool roll so I don't add a tie to keep it on, but it would be easy to add one.
Thanks for the great how to video bro. I don't have the spoon knife yet but it is on my wish list. Hopefully I'll get it soon. Now when I do I'll know how to make a cover for it. Thanks for sharing. Atb. Robert
I already cut it the wrong way not wanting to waste the leather I finished it anyway I just bent it in the other direction.it worked but I wish I would have been more careful thanks for the tips and diagram
This is great, thank you. If I didn't use a water stain, but a leather dye, how would you form the sheath around the knife? What would be the sequence of completing the project? Thanks again.
Wet form the leather before adding any dye. You can even do this before stitching if you clamp the piece in place while it dries. After it has completely dried you can open it up, die it, finish it and then stitch.
A great video Justin, I really appreciate it, I've learnt a lot. I've never done any Leather work before, so I'm off to buy some leather and give this a try, I'll let you know how it turns out. Would it be possible to do a part two .... may be how to make this a little more pretty? ATB and Merry Christmas
Might want to add a welt too (a narrow piece of leather between the two halves along the stitch line) - that protects the stitching from the blade edge and makes the sheath last longer as well as helping the fold a little more. It's usually done on straight knife sheaths, but can't hurt to do one here too. A welt sewn into the tip, by the fold, on the non-stitched side (before you assemble it) might also give the tip a little resistance to sliding out, but that may not be necessary. I'd only sew that to one side of the leather though and I'm a little paranoid about sharp things stabbing my sleeping bag (for example) while in the pack.
Great project and design! i want to make this for my mora, but just to make it easy please can you give the dimensions in centimeters. Will appreciate really! And again thank you for the exelent design and tutorial!
I'm going to try to make one of these for my Deep Woods Venture spoon knife and my DWV bowl knife. There different sizes than this one, but I might be able to make them. If it doesn't work out can you make them for me?
I don't have that kind of leather. I have scraps of dyed leathers that are not as stiff as veg tan and I've been looking to cover-up all my wood carving knives. Since COVID I have started four new hobbies from RUclips. Bushcrafting, knife making, wood carving, and leather crafting. They seem to be intertwined with each other.
For the dying could you use liquid shoe polish? Would that be like the leather dye you talked about were you could not wet form it because of the spots afterward?
i have a double bevel spoon knife i was wondering if i cut the leather a little wider so there is more coverage would that work? or would you recommend another type of sheath?
I made this one but I just ordered the 162, now im going to try it when it gets here but if I new for sure I could go ahead and make another one for it.do you no if it will work or do I need other measurements? Any info would be awesome thanks bro
Philip Culbertson With this kind cover you don't really have to worry about it. It's not seeing heavy use and your not drawing it in about out, your simply setting it in place.
I have the double sided knife because I am a lefty, do you think this design would still work? I was thinking the strap would hold it in place enough not to slide out. What are your thoughts?
Good Morning Mr Wolfe. I was just wondering if by any chance that happens to be the spoon knife cover I ordered or one like it ? If so it was very cool watching you make it . ATB and Merry Christmas. Steven M.
Well done! One of the best videos I have seen on RUclips tube. Straightforward, detailed and no wasting time on extraneous unnecessary nonsense.
Very nicely done. I really thought it was going to be boring, but I watched the entire thing, looking for more. You made it look so simple. Great work....Thanks for sharing

Hello Grierwolfe. Many thanks for sharing your knowledge and method. My version went unexpectedly well! Many thanks!
This is great, I've been making sheaths for years but somehow never figured out a good way to make a spoon knife sheath. Simple yet effective design!

This is great, thank you. If I didn't use a water stain, but a leather dye, how would you form the sheath around the knife? What would be the sequence of completing the project? Thanks again.

Family Prepper All your really doing to make it look better is simply burnishing the edges.
Might want to add a welt too (a narrow piece of leather between the two halves along the stitch line) - that protects the stitching from the blade edge and makes the sheath last longer as well as helping the fold a little more. It's usually done on straight knife sheaths, but can't hurt to do one here too. Have you ever made a sheath for a Fascine Knife?
شغل ممتاز 👍 hi iwant to ask you how to fix the cracking leather in the steering wheel ? Thank you
Excellent tip Brother going to try that
