ive been inspired to break and bend the rules of society. I'm gonna start pouring cereal on myself on the subway and throwing up on my desk at work unexpectedly
Fun fact: The budget of the show is decided on a gambling session. They take the money Adult Swim gives them and play with it on a casino, the amount that they leave with is the amount that they make the season with.
>Not naming Andy Kaufman as one of the most avant-garde comediants ever. Also i hate that "Eric is in Hell" theory, felt a lot like trying super hard to fit a puzzle piece where it doesn't belong until it kinda does but not really. Great video tho c:
Andy Kaufman is a genius. Thanks for the reminder, maybe I'll make a video on him someday. And yeah I agree about the Eric in Hell video. I think video essays too often fall into the trap of trying to create a huge overarching theory for a show, as if were something with a single answer, instead of just digging into its style. Appreciate the comment.
I agree that Andy Kaufman should be here, though the "Eric Andre is in Hell" was made for fun, as stated as literally the first line in the video! It's actually a fun little exercise in applying logic to something without it.
Well, i get what you are saying... But the fact that something was made for fun doesn't mean it can be criticized. I was just expressing my personal subjective opinion mulato. Personally i don't like when theories are: Coma, dreams, acid trips, acid dreams, hell, heaven, purgatory, etc. It is a really easy place to pick up something from because you can virtually do it with everything.
There was a lot of points I breezed over that you discussed really well. Glad someone else continued the conversation! Great essay man, excited to see more!!!! 🐥🆙
Wow man I'm honored to hear that from you. Thanks for commenting. One little thing I've been wondering for a while: is your name actually Pat Turn (as in, like, ~pattern~)? Had to ask...
I thibk the eric andre show is less about the bits and jokes and more about making the intervieweee (or whatever someone being interviewed is called) and audience uncomfortable. Its schaudenfraude (i know i didnt spell that right) based on that uncomfortable moment when a homeless drunk puts his arm around you and tells you he loves you on the street. The piece that put ths together for me was watching interviews of eric. He conducts himself awfully but less by using clever bits and more just attempting as hard as possible to derail the interview. When he sucessfully cracks or doesnt crack the interviewer he laughs. The whole point (i think) is to disect a person by toturing them to give a genuine reaction. He said in one of them (wish i could remember) that he loves making people uncomfortable and in a diffenert one told a story about how he would do random things in school to impress people. Its a joke only for yourself, making someone uncomfortable so you can laugh at them. I love it. Liked your video. TLDR/thesis: the eric andre show is about making people uncomfortable so you can laugh at them just like fail videos or jackass.
bugs bunny has a point to his trickery. most of his rivals fuck with his day or try to play him stupid that why breaks fourth wall and says..... ahhh he dont know me very well do he? ..........or you know this means war.....its daffy that completely random. know your toons bro
Wow. This actually made me appreciate Eric as an artist and entertainer. I never realised how much effort and "trickery", as you put it, it took to screw with not only the guest's head, but our own. Beautiful vid
hey mike, i appreciate your honesty, but next time I'd prefer you write this as your own separate comment that confronts ME directly as opposed to confronting someone who enjoyed the video. I understand that a number of people have been frustrated with my analysis, and while I personally disagree with the majority of those critiques (which are usually based on a false reading of my analysis or a false understanding of what it means to analyze something in the first place), I do still encourage this type of spirited debate. In wading through the mostly unhelpful critiques, I have actually found a few that will help me improve my channel going forward. But again, please don't take that negativity, which should be directed at ME, and project it onto another commenter, who simply enjoyed the video. everybody gets to have their own experience of this piece in the same way everybody should get to have their own experience of the eric andre show. best, michael
This video made me curious to check out a few episodes of the show. All I have to say is thanks to this video for introducing to me to my knew favorite show. It has all my favorite things rolled into one show: surrealism, absurdity, and slapstick comedy. And it all his delivers. Every episode I watch does not fail to get a laugh out of me and from the start of title to the end credits I am in stitches. Once again, thank you for making this video. I never knew what I was missing.
Wasn't sure about this at first, but damn, that was a solid video with some great points. Only after it finished and it recommended another video did I realize you also did - the R&M and Bojack comparison video, I loved that too! Great job!
Oh my, I think I'm in love. Every thing your channel has been so far, from the topics, the name and persona, the narration style, and the depth and wit of the content (even if there is so little of it for now) is precisely on tune with what I want from RUclips. Well done, ma' man.
Great job breaking down the fun mess that is the Eric Andre show. I'm always so confused watching Eric and found this video helpful to pin point some ideas I had trouble formalizing. Great clips! Great observations!
I swear he has done alot of acid. I've never gotten to watch his show on lsd but I can only imagine id die laughing. Shit that he does reminds me of shit I saw when I was tripping on acid, weird shit that had me laughing so bad.
It's just absurdist and surrealist humor. There's nothing "Deep" about it. He puts people in uncomfortable, surreal and absurd situations and captures the reactions. It's no different than the "caught on camera" bullshit from the 60s where they'd interview a guy but the interviewer would be a naked lady or something weird and socially uncomfortable. Bugs Bunny is a pretty good observation of Eric Andre's inspiration.
There's still a sense with the show that the absurdness is well thought out, like they deliberately knew from before what surreal situations will get the best reactions and what won't. Even "prank" shows don't go as far with the logic breaking as Eric does. Of course there is also the occasional improvisation sprinkled in some times to keep the viewer even more guessing about what is intentional or not.
That is the reason why the show didn't have much success, because people think he's just doing "random shit" because that's what it looks like. There's actual order in the "chaos" of the show. He's an artist at heart, and a very good one at that. People keep forgetting this and bash on his art.

Eric Andre is a huge fan of Death Grips, and I have a strong case to support he is influenced by Longmont Potion Castle. These are two of my favorite things. This means Eric Andre is one of the smartest people ever. Study these things, as well as films by David Lynch, and you will understand Eric Andre a lot. Also got a lot of tim and eric obviously
I think you guys are too self-congratulatory at cracking the case of "who's the most genius smarty" anointing sir Eric Andre as master genius because he likes this semi-abstract band... when in reality he's just put into application a technique of total random anti-comedy a vast majority of people could learn and master. Comedy just takes practice much like a musical instrument and I'm sure he's been practicing this style for years and years. Nothin more
Oh man I miss your stuff. I wish you'd make 1 more simple video. Whatever you got on your mind. Your ideas are always very interesting. You could just say your initial reaction to the season 5 of the Eric Andre show or something
In answer to the last question, new neural pathways are made every time you encounter something new and uncomfortable. Rite Of Spring by Stravinsky had a huge impact on music, in part because it did things to people's literal brains. This comedy does the same, or at least is on the same wavelength. You have to take the art that makes you uncomfortable to move your mind forward.
Thanks to all the loyal brotendos for the continued support, especially to those of you who've started pledging on patreon. Share on Facebook and Twitter if you want to help grow the channel, or just pour some milk on your head on the subway. Bird up!
He did a bit at one point where he was messing with Alex Jones that I thought was kinda funny, but beyond that I can't say I personally really like his show, but it definitely has all the hallmarks of a late night Adult Swim show so it has the audience that it has and they have their tastes. Still it's interesting to see someone try to make sense of something that's by design not supposed to make sense.
The philosophical aspects of your analysis regarding methods used on Bugs Bunny are fascinating. I knew I was seeing something familiar but I would not have put those two together. There is also a show called Space Ghost he seems to be taking cues from although maybe not as deeply.
wow, what a nugget of gold genius. I'm gonna have to check out this Eric Andre show. thank you for making this video. also the Manson and Trump video, which started me down this rabbit hole checking out some of your content.. I don't care for the Donald but you definitely dropped the ball on that one ... but now I know about Eric Andre..
I never even thought about it, but Eric really does wear a suit similar to the color of Bugs Bunny. Kind if cool watching the show if you see him as a modern reincarnation of Bugs Bunny, with everyone else being other characters from Looney Toons, like Hannibal or the band members.
I pretty much love his show because 1) I think everything he does is pretty funny, I even liked Bird Up, and 2) his creativity with the things he chooses to do on his show. He doesn't let anything in the way of his process, no person, no norm, nothing, he does it to do it. There doesn't need to be any deeper meaning to it than that.
The late Coltrane style improvisation in the background sums up the show. Also, his theme song or "intro" is based on a diminished scale, which sounds hellish and chaotic.
Great video essay! And I truly agree with pretty much all the points you made.....he just lures me in because I'm constantly surprised and for some reason that feels good lol
That's because it's not funny. I can watch Norm MacDonald, Dave Chappele, and Bill Hicks everyday and still laugh. Those jokes are over 20 years old. Andre is funny for about 10 seconds and then you forget about him because he is an irrelevant shock jock.

I’m not sure about your philosophies on it but it’s fun to analyze such an insane show and human being. I feel like I could’ve been a success doing this same kinda thing after high school, I was a beloved psychotic clown. But sadly I got into drugs and ventured down the dark side of reality. Maybe one day, but for now I’m happy someone so worthy has taken the mantle. Eric Andre is brilliant.
I love Eric Andre for the same reason I love death grips. There's nothing else like it and they both hold that super highly and have made a career off inherently flawed ideas and execution but they both have huge followings for a reason
I think the unspoken premise of the show is Andre trapped inside a bad acid trip loop where he plays the role of an unconventional talk show host and cannot escape and its driving him mad
I think its not only aboutventertainment but inspiration like You get from a psychodelic trip or making some new "brain-cell connections" You would get trough art.
I had to write a term paper on Dadaism and for a modern example I used the Eric Andre show. Because I believe it fits the neo Dadaism theory as it makes no sense and is all over the place with little concern for the viewers. So I gotta watch so much of his show and videos on it. I’m semi dead inside
Well, He's Eric. He can doing anything like Being Nazi and Kicking President Trump out from his Show and pissing out Secret Services whenever he wants. But, yeah, who want to do it?
@Baron Von Grijffenbourg You poor thing. I do feel bad, for you. A "blockcock" is when a female vagina is blocked off due to extra tissue and a cock can not get in during sexual intercourse. It can also mean when the cock has an odd shape. A "cockblock" is when someone stops, willing or unwillingly, someone else from having sex. Intelligence is not a given, stay in school.
I think ur missing out on mentioning the very obvious influence that space ghost has on the Eric Andre show but the bugs bunny stuff is absolutely perfect

I binge Eric andre show everynight before sleep haha. Makes the day better for tomorrow
"He could be trapped in hell"? 😂 no man, he had just done to many shrooms and lsd to give a shit
Good point mate! I also think that he is the PERFECT voice actor for Lucy in Disenchantment!
i think you are reading way to deep into this
aw fuk off trent
Whatever dude. You just inspired me to go watch some Eric Andre without using my brain at all. Thanks
I think the unspoken premise of the show is Andre trapped inside a bad acid trip loop where he plays the role of an unconventional talk show host and cannot escape and its driving him mad
Or he is stuck in a Hollywood persona that was only enacted for a cash grab. Pretty much every celebrity is in their own little hell lol
I think its not only aboutventertainment but inspiration like You get from a psychodelic trip or making some new "brain-cell connections" You would get trough art.
Not that deep bro
I had to write a term paper on Dadaism and for a modern example I used the Eric Andre show. Because I believe it fits the neo Dadaism theory as it makes no sense and is all over the place with little concern for the viewers. So I gotta watch so much of his show and videos on it. I’m semi dead inside
you’re digging too deep bro it’s just eric
Andrew Sherwood exactly lol 😂
Well, He's Eric. He can doing anything like Being Nazi and Kicking President Trump out from his Show and pissing out Secret Services whenever he wants. But, yeah, who want to do it?
@Baron Von Grijffenbourg It's actually cockblock, not the other way around.
@Baron Von Grijffenbourg
You poor thing.
