  • Diversity always wins the day when it comes to deer habitat. The more diversity we can offer deer in any given area, the more the deer tend to respond.
This is no different with creating deer bedding structure. Giving the deer options for different types or bedding structure within their bedding areas will result in more deer usage.
In this video, I discuss how I'm enhancing the old field areas on our farm. In particular, I show how I'm using tree planting to enhance the bedding structure that's already there.
Edit: There were some red pines mixed in the trees I was transplanting as well.

Those trees you are digging out are not "white pine." They sure look like red pine to me. Several of them are red pine for sure. Good use of them either way.

Astute observation! The neighbors have a mix of reds and whites on their's, which were the seed trees for these. There's a white I didn't dig up growing right next to our driveway and I just assumed they were all whites. But watching the video back I can see the red bark and red pine buds. We'll call this one a gaff on my part :) I do like reds too. Admittedly I get tunnel vision sometimes

Are you burning the switchgrass? If so, how do the pines handle it? or do you use an alternative method

No plans to burn this. I welcome the woody encroachment. The more woody stems I have in the switchgrass the more the deer use it. And the pines would get smoked in the fire when this young

Great vid, do you ever plant white cedar trees up there? And do you protect white pines? I've pretty much got to protect everything here make it hard to get things established.

I plant white cedar on my land in north central MN. They must go in a cage to have a chance at survival. They are a great wildlife tree. Any conifer type tree is fantastic diversity for the deer.

I have not planted them yet. They are in the plans eventually. Like buck said, they'd need to be protected

In the next 2 weeks in MN, what would you recommend for buckthorn getting the fuck rid of?

I'd wait until July 1st. We're still in the sap flow window right now.

Hey Sam, I've never done it but maybe a couple cheap strawbales set out there would work.
      Betting it would.
