great video! really enjoyed it. started carving in 93...at that time PC English was just a stones throw from me...got my first tools, wood, books there...great store and was sad when they closed....I noticed one of the first patterns you showed was from there...great memory of times going there
Leonard Price Thanks I hope this video was helpful. I would drive all the way from Arlington Virginia to their store to look at patterns and wood carving blanks.
I dont mean to be offtopic but does anybody know a method to log back into an Instagram account?? I was stupid forgot my login password. I would love any help you can give me
@Dominik Payton I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site through google and I'm in the hacking process now. Takes quite some time so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Bud Irwin The book on miniatures that I show in this video has a really nice small bald eagle. I’ve carved it once and had really good results until my cat knocked it off the top shelf and broke the legs.
Got some patterns that are made to sit your figure in a chair, boat, swing, etc,? I have seen hundreds of them standing but not sitting, or even laying on their side (in a hammock, bed, cot, etc.)
Mark, I have a question. If you carve a piece from a pattern out of a book, and sell your carving on for example say Etsy can you get sued for copyright violation?
That is a great question. Hopefully in the book that has the pattern will see copyright free. As an artist I would change the pattern a bit anyways. I would be afraid to copy anything exactly. Disney has made examples of single production small artist to prove a point. I’m not a lawyer but be careful. I would just change it up a little bit.
Thanks for your question. It depends on the complexity of the pattern. The side profile is usually more complicated than the front so I will do that first. I will tape it back together and then do the other side. I do the more complicated side first because I seem to be more detail oriented in the beginning of my cuts. after a couple hundred blanks, you’ll figure out which is best for you.
This is what I struggle with most!! I can see what I want in the wood.. just can’t get the concept of carving and pulling it out. I love carving sooo much. I try not to get frustrated but sometimes I have to walk away for the day. I’ve been at it for a few years. Any more tips and advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much. Jeremy from Massachusetts
I’ve been carving for 40 years and I still get frustrated at times and walk away from it for a day or two. Try making a clay model first. Carve the clay with your wood carving knives just like you would a piece of wood, I hope this is helpful.
you didn`t mention anything about making your own patterns which would have been usefull, i normally start with a photograph or drawing that i find on the internet and then imagine the rest, i have a couple of my projects on youtube but i am still learning, (newbie)
That is awesome! Honestly most people are not that brave to make their own patterns. I would encourage that. There’s no faster way to learn. Finding study reference and making your own patterns is truly the way to an artistic result.

@Dominik Payton it did the trick and I finally got access to my account again. I am so happy:D
Thanks so much, you really help me out :D
Thanks for your helpful video . I am looking for whole human body patterns in various figures.
Great video!
Thank you, I appreciate that
Your redtail is very good. I wish I could find a very detailed bald eagle that could be cut out with scroolsaw & carved.

Por favor. Como puedo reducir un patrón?. Gracias.
Is it better to cut the front pattern or side pattern first and why?

Can you send me some of the books i would love some

I have done very similar with Woodglut designs.

I'm pretty dumb and this is way harder than I thought it would be. Very helpful video, subscribed
You’re way too hard on yourself. My first carvings were a disaster. Takes time and practice but you’ll get there.
Do you know how to create a pattern using AI?
No, I’ve never heard of that. Could be very interesting though. It would make a great video.
@@markdmaker3173 Thanks for the quick reply. I'm sure there is someone who could do it.
I tried that to use a 2d to 3d but it came out all distorted
