  • Going out with Jane in the next week or so....waiting for warmer night time weather, to ensure the propane still vaporizes! Getting the big Norma and my optics sorted.

    Good show Greg. It’s funny the older we get, the cold weather seems to get worse. But still not old enough to be affected by recoil. 👍

    I had a .358 Norma and I hand loaded for it. I really loved it. I once made some brass by running .300 win mag brass through the .358 Norma die. I like the way that brass turned out because the neck was longer. That meant I could seat the bullet about an eighth of an inch further forward and still use the cannelure on the bullet. That gave me 3 o 4 grains more powder capacity. Why don't you give this a try and tell me how it works out for youl.

    I love finding great deal on good, underrated optics. My 10x30 Zeiss Conquest binoculars for walking around are excellent. Anything bigger and you will find that you end up leaving them at home or in the truck.

      I just acquired a .358 Norma myself, and I’m choosing to leave this one without optics at all, iron sights…sometimes irons are better in my opinion, if your along a bush line and only get a 3 second window at a moving target a scope sucks!
      Agreed about big binoculars being a nuisance.

    I agree on a lower powered optic and keep the power set on 1x for up close. The 358 Norma is a beast.
    Ive used 338RCM compact rifle on elk deer further south. Its more like a higher speed 350 rem mag. Has enough reach yet plentt of bulletbweight. Recently picked up a Ruger 375 Alaskan and its going to also be a serious field rifle. Ill jave a quick detach low power optic, quick detach Aimpoint 9000, and of course the irons. Its very similiar to you 358 norma

    Two excellent rifles and cartridges. I'm a huge fan of the 9.3x62 and have always had a soft spot and interest in the .358 Norma but never have owned one, would favor that over the .338 Winchester Magnum, really enjoy your channel and big game rifle choices, thanks for your hard work in producing very interesting stuff for your viewers/subscribers

    That Varberger has an awful thin Barrel for a 358 Norma. I know you carry it more than you shoot it. Got a good deal on a Shilen No. 3 Contour barrel otherwise I would of installed a No. 4 Contour barrel.

      The stock design handles the recoil and my..how it shoots! I sold my heavy barrel Sako in 358 Norma as it didn't shoot any better and was a pig to carry.

    I have been hunting with the 308 norma mag with the 180 oryx load this year, its got lots of jam and I love the norma round, but I've switched back to the 8 Remington mag with 220's for the rest of the season, time is getting short and it just gives me more confidence, Also playing with new 150 grain loads for the 308 for sheep season, and having a hard time justifying re sighting back to the 180s. how do you find the recoil on the 358?

    • @north61
      @north61  3 года назад

      The rifle is moderately heavy and has a really straight stock..that brings the recoil straight back with very little upward movement. I find the upward movement shoves the stock into your face and accentuates recoil. The stock design on this Norma is perfect and goes a long way to making it easy to shoot. My Savage 99 in the mild 358 Win is a bit worse because of the upward jab it gives you.

    How's the .358 Norma in comparison to .35 Whelen?

    • @north61
      @north61  3 года назад +1

      about 150-200fps advantage to the big Norma, with heavy bullets less with light bullets. Sort of like 308 vs 30-06.

    Any particular advice you can provide to keep firearms functioning well and working in very cold conditions?
    Also, any reason not to use stainless steel firearms? I live in Vancouver now but in NZ where I'm from they're almost ubiquitous for hunters.

    • @north61
      @north61  3 года назад +2

      The big thing in extreme cold is too get the grease and oil out of the sear mechanism and the bolt. Strip it all down and degrease it. Below -20C it will slow things down like the firing pin fall and lead to failures to fire. I put a touch of -40 synthetic grease on the bolt lugs (only) to prevent galling. I add some light oil for summer use. Stainless is great... theoretically I have read that it might not be as strong as non-stainless in really cold weather but I have never had or seen a problem so it might just be talk. It's certainly a bit easier to care for in the wilderness, and especially in wet conditions.

    How far do you think the 9.3x62 could be effective on bisons? I think I need to find myself a nice classic bolt action 9.3x62!! If you hear of something let me know, full stock would be great, iron sights a plus, single or double set trigger would be nice!!
