300 H&H magnum vs 300 weatherby. Why would you ever pick the H&H over the weatherby? Well, it has less recoil than the weatherby making it easier for the average hunter to handle, it produces magnum ballistics basically matching the performance of the most popular 300 magnums, particularly the 300 win mag, so it basically does the work of the most common level of 300 magnum performance and does so with a more reasonable level of recoil, which contributes to better shooting. The weatherby basically only adds a bit more range but at the expense of more powder and more recoil.

Less barrel wear, more practice equaling better shooting, reloading can be a factor, availability, affordability, etc. Squeaking out a few pounds and a few fps is irrelevant to game acquisition. 2,200# will drop it but 2,150# will only tickle it?? Then jump up a full caliber.
      300 H&H all the way.

Very good video and I own a 300 H&H Magnum . Basically you can only buy 180 grain factory ammo for this baby BUT I reload for mine and I can use a good variety of lighter or heavier bullets without hurting the chamber . I use slower burning powders for my 26 inch barrel and she shoots tight groups . Love the H&H Magnum . Thanks for the good schooling !!!!

Very well thought out video. 300PRC considerations were extremely interesting. When I sold guns and ammo in the early 2000s, people preferred the 30-378Wby over the 300RUM. At that time, factory rifles chambered in 30-378Wby were better quality and more accurate. There's no comparison between a Weatherby MkV Accumark and anything Remington was producing at that time. No one in my area was building custom rifles in 300RUM.

Years ago I wanted a .50 cal rifle in .500 AS but there was a financial obstetrical so my barrel maker advised a parallel throat 1 in 14 twist it could shoot 500 to 750 gr bullets 550 cast drive them fast.

But I'm getting a Magnum lengh rifle( Vanguard or other) and have it rebarreled for either 7RM or 300WM. Same magazine but can seat out the 168-180 grns 7RM( To bad Rem didn't use the 300 WM case for the 7RM) or the 190-200 grns 300 WM and gain a bit of case cap. Pairing the 300 H&H with the 300 Wby is comparing apples to oranges. The 300 Wby was always set to outperform the Holland & Holland from its inception. It’s like comparing any magnum 30 cal with the 30-06, which is ridiculous. First the 308 Norma (necked down 338 Win Mag), then the 300 Win Mag, where specifically designed to meet 300 H&H specs, in a cheaper long action. So this is where the comparison should have been. Did Winchester or Norma outdo Holland & Holland? The answer is no. The Win Mag needs 4 to 5 grains more powder to achieve the same velocity as the H&H, and the 300 H&H can also shoot a 250 grain bullet faster than the Win Mag. The Norma, which is a better design than the 300 Win Mag, comes short as well.
If you compare the 300 WSM and the 300 Holland & Holland, you’ll see they are very evenly matched, down to the amount of powder used in reloading. It’s just a matter of theoretical accuracy between the two. The WSM is more practical, but the H&H feeds so much smother.
All the “ultra” magnums are unnecessary, just step up to a 338 Win Mag for Pete’s sake. At some point it’s just a case of diminishing returns, and more frontal area becomes more useful than speed. I dislike inefficient cartridges.

@@hopefulballistics I went down this rabbit hole years ago. My conclusion was .308 is extremely prolific, but not enough punch compared to the 30-06. Which, according to the greats in the hunting world, is bar none, the most flexible carriage ever. You can shoot a 110 V-Max to a 220 grain Partition. Then you have your magnums. The 300 WSM is efficient and the most practical, chambered in all rifles. The 300 H&H, also more efficient than the other magnums, was dethroned by an inferior round, because a true magnum action was more expensive to manufacture. Winchester, looking at the Norma, made the neck less than one caliber to get more powder in the cartridge. Unless you reload, you wouldn’t know how inefficient the 300 Win Mag is.
For me, the ultra mags have too much muzzle blast and recoil for a lowly 30 cal. Step up to a 338 Win Mag, the quintessential elk cartridge.
As for me, rolling into hunt camp with a 300 H&H might be nostalgic, but I know didn’t leave anything on the table. It also makes for amazing conversation. Thanks for the video. Looking forward to seeing all the episodes.

You said it best at the beginning. The 300-H&H has won competitions and is proven most definitely for African plains game animals including the Largest Elland. Also is the relationship of the recoil push. Recoil speed is slowed down for a more gentle impulse. All of your 30 magnum comparisons "Are Great Cartridges" . I own 3 of the ones you mention and for me and my small sample of just the three, the 300 H&H is more accurate, longer barrel life, less recoil impulse and if you handload velocities are just a little less than 2% of the 300 win. Mag. less than. 60 fps. Thanks for your discussion on these big boys.

@@davestrohmeyer-saddleupsho8009 Hi there Dave, very much enjoyed your history of the 300 H&H, back about two years ago.
The old Holland & Holland isn’t really on people’s radar any more, but for a cartilage that hadn’t had rifles in continuous production for over 60 years, it holds on because of how accurate and efficient it is. Everyone that has one, sings its praise, and we prefer it to to the other 300 magnums. The 300 Wby also has a cult following, but I’d rather step up to the 338 Win Mag at that point.
Those of us using the 300 H&H are all reloaders, and typically have more than one 30 cal. I believe it says a lot, most of these men go thru the trouble of shooting a cartridge that is not an “off the shelf” option. Rifles and brass are not easy to come by.
During the powder shortage I switched from H4831SC, to StaBall 6.5. Would be happy to share load data if you ever need it. H4350 is also a great powder, but that has become hard to find as well.
Best of luck to you, you’re obviously in the know. God bless.

I do not like big 30s for the deer size game I hunt. The 30-06 is my preferred 30 çal cartridge. I think the plain 280 Remington is the best all round medium game cartridge but use the 30-06 because it is common. If I need more power. I'd skip over too larger bore 33 caliber .
Since the discussion is about 30 çal. I agree 300 PRC is the winner. I hate belted cases because I'm a hand loader that likes to control my headspace by shoulder bump pluse you can feel the belt when feeding from the magazine. Minor issues though I must admit.
If I planned a trip to Africa for plains game with a big 30 it would be 300 Win Mag because of commonality. It do admit it makes the most sense. Best 30 case design is the PRC. The 30-06 and the 308 were designed to be an antipersonnel cartridge. The Rem, Nosler and Weatherby are nasty to shoot, period. So is the Win Mag. One wants the most popular, etc. But I bet if you considered how long has each been around, how many have been produced and in satisfactory use, which are the most versatile, which are the most user friendly, which has taken the most game, which are the most popular world wide, and availability, just for starters, how much do you want to bet the 30-06 comes out on top?

This post from this expert is supposed to be about the best cartridge, not marketing hype, reputation or shear case capacity. All of the blown out 30 magnums fall far short of the virtues of the 300 H&H. They double headspace on both the belt and the shoulder. What can go wrong? Unless chamber and cartridge dimensions are exquisitely accurate and consistent they headspace on one, not both. Is it any wonder the H&H is more accurate, everything else being equal? Second, the long gradually tapered case burns powder more efficiently. Why? Simple compressible flow dynamics. Pressure drop through a gradually tapered diameter reduction is less than through a sharp shouldered sudden reduction. Take a look at artillery ammunition. You won’t see sharp shoulders. If this technology driven comparison were about cartridge design it would be over quickly with nothing equaling the 300 H&H on technical merits.
