Muslim Shaggan- Raag Kedara

Gwalior Gharana's representative Muslim Shaggan performs the evening melody Raag Kedara at Lahore Music Forum's Sangeet Mela on 3rd January 2016. Presently aged 19, Muslim has shown tremendous potential to continue the tradition of his family, a legacy which as included his great grandfather Ustad Bhai Lal Muhammad and his late grandfather and mentor, Ustad Ghulam Hassan Shaggan. Anil Sunny, Zohaib Hassan and Khairat Ali provide accompaniment.

Muslim Shaggan seems to have developed a bad habit in his gayaki from emulating his grandfather. There is a shaky movement at the end of many, many phrases and it hurts Kedar quite badly. Sur lagao seemed a bit off too at first, for Kedar at least. Lots of room to grow however and lots of obvious potential.

Agree. This is because Shaggan sahab used to have these 'movements' in his last years, but that was his style, and his only (probably because he used summon his phirat at such an advanced age). These aspiring youngsters should develop their own unique style, instead of emulating greats whom they saw and learnt from in their old age. But, anyways, a very nice performance and true to kedaar.

Absolutely, quite true to Kedar. I should have said he hurt the beauty of his own efforts. Some singers would struggle to even summon Kedar in the first place. Very rightly said about original style, but I think this is a part of normal development in hindustani music as well to an extent.
