Installing and testing a sketchy $400 transmission

  • Welp, another video. This time featuring the 2010 mustang, and finally getting around to addressing the bad transmission. After getting a (possibly too good to be true) deal on a used unit, we install and put it to the test to see if it works. I’m not even sure if this is the correct transmission, year, miles, nothing. Let’s just get it in and try it out.

    I like the way most of these cars nowadays say in the manual that you never need to change the transmission fluid, so when it does go out they tell you that the warranty expired.

    • @MXguy95
      @MXguy95  6 месяцев назад +6

      Exactly! They started this crap back in the late 90s (with fords that I know of anyway) and it just got worse from here. Since then companies have been making money selling aftermarket kits to add a functional dipstick and larger capacity fluid pans. It really helps to prolong the life of these transmissions. We bought a new Camry years ago and it had “lifetime transmission fluid” with a 10 speed auto. Yea NOT, I had all the intentions of changing with my own service interval but we no longer have it. Put 60k trouble free miles on her though! Carried us all over the northeast and southern states

    • @TwoDollarGararge

      There are reasons for this many car companies have come to the estimation that their average car will last 130 to 150k tops before it's junked so they designed the original fluid to last roughly that long The dipstick was partially removed but also because it saves money and that's one less thing you have to route through the middle of the engine being that we don't live in a front engine rear wheel drive world anymore there's a lot of weird twist and turns the dipstick has to go on to reach the transmission

I have done the same within since my ownership, especially with the Transmission, Transfer Case and differential. I am a stickler for that stuff.

    Ah the good old 5R55S. The Intermediate band is usually the first to go on those. Fun fact, they were also used in the exploders of that generation. Since you can't check the fluid level it is usually too late before the damage is done. Lack of fluid changes and a poor design is what causes these to fail.

    A momentary delay when first shifting into drive on a 100k transmission isn’t that uncommon. Maybe a solenoid kit would help and running some fully synthetic ATF; plus nursing it along a little and it will last awhile. People tend to forget or neglect changing ATF and never do it. As in, ever! They also think whatever ATF was poured in at the factory is the best stuff going but it’s usually the cheapest thing the manufacturer could buy in bulk.

      There is a special tool that threads into that drain plug and acts as a “straw” that goes up into the transmission. Essentially if you put the tool in and fluid comes out afterwards you let it slow down to a drip and it’s full. Although, you can also drain it completely and measure how much fluid came out 😅 it’s a garbage design.

      @@williamsinger4124 unfortunately due to some rusted fuel lines I didn’t enjoy it much this summer. I even have an AC kit to install but never got the chance. I’m going to get it towed down to the shop (I live too far away to drive it) and patch that line and change her fluids. If nothing else, she will be ready for spring!

      @@williamsinger4124 I hate filming the repairs on that car, it’s my pride and joy and … she’s a little rusty underneath 😞 but I might bring everyone along for the repair anyway. It was o hard finding a hatch in the first place, I wanted a running and driving unit. Didn’t have to be showroom. I got the best of both worlds. Runs out like a top, looks good from 10 feet. But not too nice I’m afraid to drive it. We were in the process of moving too after I got it, and put us further north and in an area where they salt. With the already crusty underbelly, I don’t want to expose her anymore to the winters. Im glad you don’t run your z24 like that too. I want a vert z in my collection next
