All SEC Safety famous for his play vs. Miami in the 1992 National Championship game. He had an interception with a return for a touchdown. Five plays later, he raced downfield and caught up with sprinting University of Miami wide receiver Lamar Thomas and stripped the ball from him in full stride, maintaining possession of the ball as he returned it upfield. Although the play was called back on an offsides penalty against Alabama, it effectively quashed Miami's effort to regain their offensive momentum: Miami was forced to punt soon afterward, and never mounted another substantial offensive threat in the Crimson Tide's 34-13 victory.

I'm a Penn State fan but I was definitely rooting for Bama in that game, mostly because the Bear and Paterno were great friends, and I felt like this win was for the Bear (also, my team stunk in 1992, getting trounced in the Blockbuster Bowl). This was an awesome win to cap an amazing season. That play I don't know if it has a name, I've always called it "Teague's Got The Ball" and "The Best Play That Never Happened" because it was nullified by an offsides penalty. Despite that, the play _did_ count indirectly, had Teague not stripped the ball away, Miami would have declined the Offsides penalty, and it certainly had a psychological effect on the Hurricanes (who were downgraded to Tropical Storms). They played a bit deflated after that.

I know this from a sportswriter who covered this game: Miami spent all week in the French Quarter talking trash to the press and starting fights. The Bama guys were in by 10 every night (on pain of missing the game completely). I think Coach Stallings may have given an interview, but none of the players did.
Alabama came in sober, hungry and ready to play football. Miami thought they could win on their big mouths and previous record, so they were not prepared. And then they whined like babies after the game. That press conference is an exercise in complete lack of class and sportsmanship. "They never let Gino get set!" one whined. Well DUH! That's the defense's job, you big wuss! We're still laughing about this game! It's a legend in Crimson Tide lore!

@drewper73 Not a student, but had and still have family at the school. The VP of Development is a family member. I had the opportunity to meet Antonio Langham and Prince Wimbley this fall....such great guys! Also have gotten to know Ivy Williams, our old running backs coach in the mid 90s. Of course, being the face behind Alabama Nation on YT, FB, and the website helped that happen. Here's to whoopin LSWho! ROLL TIDE ROLL!!!

While watching and recalling, I don't understand all the hoopla. Great play, yeah, but a play doesn't exist in reality. Never happened.

I can remember resenting coach Stallings late that season in the week before the Iron bowl. Bama had some of their star players get in some trouble or something IDK the specifics, but it was my opinion they should'nt have been playing. It was Stallings' decision they could play. The entire Stallings era was difficult for me. I just simply do not like the guy.

How embarrassing! To get tracked down from behind and have the ball stripped during a National Championship game. 😂😂😂 Hurricane Season is over. The Tide has risen!
