Dune: Part Two has a realistic chance to become Timothée Chalamet's biggest box office hit, but beating the current record holder is no easy task. Chalamet's decision to star as Paul Atreides in Denis Villeneuve's Dune franchise marked the first major piece of IP that he lent his talents to. 2021's Dune was a substantial box office success, even after Warner Bros. decided to release the movie on HBO Max the same day as in theaters. The movie still performed quite well, as it made over $400 million worldwide, and became a sign that Timothée Chalamet might be a box office draw for audiences.
It is fair to say that expectations for Dune 2's box office are much higher as a result of how the first movie did. Before Warner Bros. delayed Dune 2 to 2024, it was projected to be the biggest movie released over the last few months of 2023. Although several other major titles were releasing around it, the anticipation for Denis Villeneuve's sequel was much higher than The Marvels or The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. Depending on how high Dune 2's box office climbs, it has the chance to break Timothée Chalamet's box office record set 10 years ago, but it will not be easy.

@@cernunnosch427 that's true Dune isn't really that deep. First one is a fun story to read, very good SF novel. Maybe even first 3 books. But Herbert tried too hard to write a deep dive into mankind's nature. That part didn't go very well.
That’s probably why the SyFy channel only did the first 3 books in their 2 mini series…..
And for what it’s worth, I think they did an excellent job.
My only grip was that there were too many actor changes in Children of Dune.
Would love to see Denis finish with Children of Dune, keeping all his actors intact in finishing the series.

Except that line isn't from Dune. It is made up. The Dune line is he who can destroy a thing controls a thing. "Real control of it" is an abomination. Frank Herberts prose is far more elegant.

Comparing this to the 1984 version, Paul's shout of "SILENCE!" at the bene gesserit was a lot better in David Lynch's version.

NEVER READ THE BOOKS....BUT A FAN OF ALL THE MOVIES...David Lych's 8-s film was awesome in it's production design, The mini series on SYFY was good as well.
The original book is one of the best books I've ever read. Highly recommended.

Denis knows how to make a great cast. After his run for DUNE I can’t wait to see what Sci fi he wants to tackle next. Perhaps 20000 leagues under the sea? Or something even more out there. He’s already made a great bladerunner sequel and dune was phenomenal.

Dune was my favorite movie for at least the last decade. THis looks even better. I have read the books, and this is more fun. The books are wild and not really made for movies. They are doing an amazing job with making great movies, without really following the wild books.

Remember Paul is the biggest villain in a story without heroes.
Indeed. But mesmerised by the genuinely spectacular cinematography and potential well written script, the public will not get it. I see it as not a Hero fulfilling his destiny but a parable of how the alluring of power destroys character, humanity in humans, and makes history. The concept of prophecy is for the weak, the stupid, and the power hungry (these three attributes go hand in hand). Paul should have said NO. Even if somebody guaranteed to him that the prophecy would get fulfilled, he should have said NO. I shall have no part in it. I shall have no blood on my hands. And, of course, he should have united all peoples, unmasked and fought against those witches who had spread the ‘prophetic’ lies to serve their agenda. Those Bene Gesserit were the real villains. The Harkonnens were just greedy and animal- stupid pawns played like everybody else.
Paul’s mother was a criminal, too. She could have somewhat redeemed herself by helping Paul and the people with inside information and sabotage of the witches, but she was a crap person nurturing dreams of her son on the big throne.
It's a deconstruction of the white savior trope
He's both villain and hero. He (and Leto since Paul ultimately couldn't bring himself to fully bring about the Golden Path) saves mankind through the evil of absolute tyranny and when mankind ultimately throws off the shackles of Leto's tyranny, they are spread amongst the stars free of the past.

@@claudiamanta1943 Well, you clearly haven't read the books outside of Dune. Because it's the entire point of what he does. He puts humanity on the Golden Path to save them. Because on it's current path humanity is a dead end. The activities in Dune are just the beginning. But I can understand how actual complexity of character would be beyond a grown person who uses the "rolls eyes" smiley.
