    Best thing about this scene is how Jack found a way to win even after he'd lost everything. That mocking yet knowing laugh as he faded away was a celebration of having sealed Dudley's fate.

      justgivemethetruth What you described is a very brutal death, moreover - when the throat is cut, the bleeding is so intense and so close to the brain, that the victim indeed won't be able to think of anything meaningful (at least for more than 1-2 seconds).
      You just try to remember war stories of dying but lucid people, or stories of accident victims - half their bodies missing - who were still able to think clearly, until they were dead a few moments later. Past a certain age all people have encountered such stories, so Vincent's actions after he'd been shot look quite realistic, and because he was a clever man - quite clever. The nature of his wound also gave him some precious time.

    I like how Jack says rollo tommassi to Dudley then smiles when he knows that Dudley will mention it to Ed. Then Ed will know that Dudley is the criminal as rollo tommassi is the code name for a criminal that gets away with it. So jack knows his death will be avenged.

    • @el_Ewok
      @el_Ewok 6 лет назад +114

      What's more, that laugh is intentionally to make Dudley more intrigued about Rollo Tomassi, to assure he will ask Exley. Maybe he didn't find it funny, but he did it to ensure Dudley would ask... So many more layers in the rest of the dialogue and for the rest of the film that makes for an outstanding script besides acting. Hard to believe Brian Helgeland wrote few years after such a crap as Payback (i.e.)

      Kevin Spacey had a great deal of difficulty playing dead. It was easy enough for him to stare straight ahead when there was an actor or actress in front of him, but his first instinct was to follow James Cromwell with his eyes when he moved. He had to ask a Production Assistant to draw a circle for him, at which to look, on the opposite wall.

    Jack does not say ROLLO TOMASI cause Smith is the guy who always gets away with it,though obviously,he´s been getting away with it up until now. He says it cause it is LITERALLY the only words that can bring Dudley down and by his own hand. Even with a bullet in his chest,he still has the clarity and insight to realize Dudley won´t want any loose ends so he will talk to other cops about Rollo...most likely,Jacks new partner,Ed Exley. Who invented Rollo.... That´s why he dies with a smile....best last words,best fuck you,one of cinemas best death scenes ever,how Spacey was overlooked by the academy is very weird.

      Christopher Jay I think he's laughing because he's just set up Dudley Smith.
      "Rollo Tommasi" is a name Exley made up for his father's unknown murderer, and he only told Vincennes about it, in confidence.
      Now that Vincennes told it to Smith, Smith is going to ask Exley about it, and Exley is going to become suspicious.
      With his dying breath, Vincennes basically just sent a coded message to Exley, telling him: "look out for Smith, he's involved in my murder".

    I love how the inspiration for the major characters in L.A. Noir can be traced directly back to this movie.
    Cole Phelps is a mix of Exley and Bud
    Roy from the Vice division is Jack
    Captain James Donnelly is Dudley
    Elsa from the Blue Light Room is Lynn
    L.A. Noir is literally just L.A. Confidential, the game.

    A perfect example of what a combination of great screenwriter, casting choice, direction and music can achieve.
    The script perfectly built it up, with a powerful twist after twist. James Cromwell is mostly known from positive, funny characters, so nobody thought he is the incarnation of evil.
    Which is scary in itself - psychopats dont always look like villains, they often look innocent. And Kevin Spacey acting with that tense music after "Rollo Tomasi" words and his laugh.
    And it only gets better after the reveal to Guy Pierce.

    The laugh at 1:58 always gets me. For a long time I have believed that the reason he's laughing is that he is just solved the case and the man who murdered him will be the one to incriminate himself. I re-watched the film recently and I've got another idea of why he's starting to laugh. I think he remembers now why he became a police officer. When he could not answer that question earlier he was obviously upset about that. Now in his final moment, in a twisted way, he is happy.

    It is almost funny how shocking this scene is, ... but why? Because most of the movie we see are so stupid ... the bad guy always takes time to gloat, explain, but Cromwell here realizes he is in danger, works it out and just cold bloodedly kills Spacey. Shocking as 911. Sickening too.

Come on,man...The usual suspects. Fight Club. J.F.K. Reservoir Dogs. Magnolia. Saving P Ryan. The talented mr.Ripley. The Shawshank redemption. Bound. Boogie Nights. Road to Perdition. Heat. Donnie Brasco. American beauty. Last of the mohicans. TRUE ROMANCE etc and so on....some I´ve seen 20 times,others are so great,others just examples but I will strongly disagree. People are debating whether Jack is laughing at Dudley being a "Rollo Tomasi" or because he's getting the last laugh by sending a posthumous message to Exley. But I think it's both.
    Jack realizes Dudley is a "guy who gets away with it," just like Exley's imaginary criminal, which THEN inspires him to use that name to send a message to Exley.
    He's laughing because he knows he's beaten Dudley AND laughing at the irony that Dudley is a real-life "Rollo."
    It's both.

    Kevin Spacey and Guy Pierce are great in this movie, especially Spacey. Russell Crowe was starting to brew his monotone, always squinting, always hunched looking like he's gonna punch someone "Gladiator" style of acting. I seriously don't get why he does that in most of his movies and get critical acclaim. Why cant he play more characters like Captain Jack Aubrey? Why cant he be more like Spacey who can be slimy and a douche one moment and be this relatably genuine cool guy in the next.

    • @kevtb874
      @kevtb874 10 лет назад +3

      Hey. Don't badmouth Crowe. This is easily one of his best roles. He plays the hot head cop perfectly. He genuinely comes across as the kind of man you wouldn't want to get on the wrong side of. Love the interview scene when he breaks the chair and threatens the dude by sticking a gun in his mouth. The poor can barely spill his guts quick enough because his mouth is full. Lol.

    • @rahjeel
      @rahjeel 10 лет назад

      Not really badmouthing Crowe. I actually love his take on Captain Jack Aubrey in Master and Commander. He was charming, wise and has the poise of a hardened naval commander that doesn't look like he's just projecting a lot, subtle and consistent in his character. But his other works I think he's trying too hard to act steely and menacing. If you put me in the situation as the guy who gets interrogated in that scene I would be more afraid of Guy Pierce's matter-of-fact, by the book stern portrayal of a good cop than his attempt on becoming a bad tempered grunt.

    • @479isis
      @479isis 10 лет назад

      That's how well ALL played their roles. This is an ensemble piece at it's finest with two great actors in Crowe and Pearce who are so different but found common ground to get justice. Love this movie, so quotable and true to the noir style. Crowe had me at Virtuosity but really got me in this movie.
